Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

1. Stand watch as helmsman or lookout during navigation and report any hazards or irregularities to the bridge officer.
2. Steer the vessel under the direction of the Officer of the Watch, maintaining correct course and helm control.
3. Assist in mooring and unmooring operations by handling ropes, lines, and winches safely.
4. Perform routine deck maintenance, including chipping, painting, greasing, and cleaning to preserve ship integrity.
5. Operate deck machinery such as windlasses, cranes, and capstans under supervision.
6. Handle cargo operations, including securing and inspecting loads, and assisting with loading/unloading.
7. Conduct lookout duties to ensure navigational safety, identifying vessels, obstacles, and hazards.
8. Participate in safety drills, including firefighting, abandon-ship, and man-overboard exercises.
9. Assist in the deployment and maintenance of lifesaving and firefighting equipment.
10. Support bridge team operations during navigation, docking, and maneuvering procedures.
