Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  1. Conduct detailed client consultations and health assessments, obtain medical histories, lifestyle factors, body systems review and acupuncture suitability; define treatment goals and contraindications.
  2. Develop individualized acupuncture treatment plans based on assessment findings, TCM diagnosis (e.g., meridian patterns, Qi/Blood imbalance), and integrate with other therapies as appropriate.
  3. Deliver acupuncture treatments using a variety of techniques (filiform needles, electro‑acupuncture, moxibustion, cupping, acupressure) following protocols for safety, comfort and optimal clinical effect.
  4. Monitor client progress through follow‑up sessions, reviewing response to treatment, adjusting plans, documenting changes and recommending lifestyle or dietary modifications as needed.
  5. Educate clients about the acupuncture process, expected outcomes, after‑care instructions, lifestyle and wellness strategies, and answer any questions regarding treatment or holistic health.
  6. Maintain detailed and confidential treatment records (SOAP notes), charting assessments, treatments given, client responses, complications and future plans in compliance with legal, clinical and regulatory guidelines.
  7. Collaborate with other healthcare practitioners—physicians, physical therapists, nutritionists, integrative clinicians—to coordinate care, discuss referrals and integrate acupuncture into broader health plans.
  8. Maintain a safe, clean and organized treatment environment: adhere to infection control, sterilization, needle safety, disposal protocols, and clinic hygiene standards.
  9. Supervise support staff or health assistants as needed, provide guidance or training in clinic protocols, equipment usage and client flow.
  10. Participate in marketing, client outreach, wellness‑education events, informational seminars or workshops to promote acupuncture services and grow clinic presence.
  11. Maintain and order supplies and equipment relevant to acupuncture practice — needles, cups, moxa, herbal adjuncts, and ensure inventory is managed and budget‑compliant.
  12. Review and update clinic protocols, treatment guidelines, safety procedures and participate in quality‑assurance audits or regulatory compliance reviews.
  13. Conduct or contribute to research, outcome tracking, case studies, documentation of clinical effectiveness of acupuncture for specific conditions.
  14. Refer clients to other medical or allied health services when conditions exceed scope, ensure safe continuity of care and follow‑up on referrals.
  15. Maintain professional development: attend seminars, workshops, advanced training in TCM, acupuncture modalities, and stay current with integrative‑health research.
  16. Ensure compliance with local, state and national regulations for acupuncture practice, licensure, continuing education, scopes of practice and clinic accreditation.
  17. Provide holistic wellness advice including diet, nutrition, exercise, lifestyle changes, herbal supplements and stress‑management techniques to complement acupuncture care.
  18. Manage scheduling, billing, clinical workflows, client communications, cancellations and clinic documentation systems for efficient service delivery.
  19. Adapt and tailor treatment plans for special populations: older adults, pediatrics, chronic pain, oncology support, postpartum women, athletes, and integrate acupuncture into multidisciplinary care.
  20. Promote client satisfaction, solicit feedback, monitor therapeutic outcomes and participate in continuous improvement initiatives to refine service delivery and client retention.

Secondary Functions

Required Skills & Competencies

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:
Completion of an accredited acupuncture program or Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) diploma/degree and licensure or certification in acupuncture.

Preferred Education:
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Acupuncture/TCM, additional certifications in integrative medicine or clinical research.
