Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Lead comprehensive value-chain assessments and market diagnostics to identify commercial opportunities, constraints, pricing dynamics, seasonal bottlenecks, and key actors across input supply, production, aggregation, processing, and distribution.
  • Develop and implement agribusiness and market access strategies that translate diagnostics into practical interventions (contract farming schemes, aggregation models, off-taker arrangements, input distribution networks) that increase farmer incomes and buyer reliability.
  • Design and pilot contract farming and outgrower models, including drafting contracts, establishing grading and quality standards, and coordinating logistics between smallholders and commercial buyers to secure predictable supply.
  • Provide technical agronomy guidance to farmers and agribusiness partners to improve crop management, pest and disease control, soil fertility, planting calendars, and yield optimization while promoting climate-smart agricultural practices.
  • Build, negotiate, and manage commercial partnerships with buyers, processors, input suppliers, exporters, and financial institutions to establish reliable market linkages and unlock private-sector investment.
  • Prepare detailed business plans, financial models, and feasibility studies for agribusiness ventures, including cash flow projections, break-even analysis, pricing strategies, and investment requirements for scaling.
  • Design and implement farmer/SME training curricula on good agricultural practices (GAP), post-harvest handling, quality assurance, traceability, hygiene and safety standards (e.g., GlobalG.A.P., HACCP), and business skills.
  • Lead post-harvest and value-addition initiatives such as improved storage, drying, sorting, packaging, and small-scale processing interventions to reduce losses and increase product value.
  • Advise on agribusiness finance solutions including input credit schemes, warehouse receipt systems, mobile-based payments, micro-leasing, and loan facilitation mechanisms tailored to smallholders and agri-SMEs.
  • Manage supply chain planning and logistics optimization to improve aggregation points, transport scheduling, cold chain requirements (where relevant), and inventory management to reduce lead times and costs.
  • Conduct commodity market analysis and price forecasting to inform procurement timing, hedging strategies, and marketing plans for seasonality and volatility management.
  • Establish and monitor quality control protocols and supplier performance KPIs to maintain buyer specifications, reduce rejection rates, and improve traceability throughout the supply chain.
  • Support product commercialization and market entry strategies, including buyer profiling, packaging and labeling recommendations, certification support, and export compliance documentation.
  • Facilitate inclusive approaches: build women and youth engagement strategies, ensure gender-responsive programming, and design incentives that increase participation of marginalized groups in value chains.
  • Lead stakeholder engagement and coordination with producer organizations, cooperatives, local governments, extension services, NGOs, and donor agencies to align investments and scale impact.
  • Design and oversee pilot projects and scale-up plans with clear M&E frameworks, success metrics (increase in yield, margin, market share), and learning loops for iterative improvement.
  • Prepare high-quality donor and investor reports, proposals, and business cases, ensuring compliance with project requirements and demonstrating ROI and social impact (jobs, incomes, nutrition).
  • Advise on commodity-specific quality assurance, certification routes (organic, fair trade), and traceability systems to access premium markets and meet buyer specifications.
  • Identify and manage agribusiness risks including production shocks, market failure, credit risk, and climate impacts; develop mitigation strategies such as crop insurance, contract guarantees, and diversified marketing channels.
  • Coach and mentor field teams, extension agents, and agribusiness partners on best practices for farmer engagement, commercialization, and operational excellence.
  • Implement digital agriculture solutions (mobile advisory, e-extension, farm management apps, digital payments) to scale advisory services, improve data collection, and strengthen market linkages.

  • Support collection, cleaning and analysis of field-level production and market data to feed performance dashboards and improve decision-making.
  • Contribute to the organization’s agribusiness strategy and scaling roadmap by providing market insights, lessons learned, and recommended next steps for replication.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Agribusiness, Agricultural Economics, Agronomy, Rural Development, or related field.

Preferred Education:

  • Master’s degree in Agribusiness Management, Agricultural Economics, Agronomy, Sustainable Development, or an MBA with agricultural focus.
