  • Perform pre‑shift and post‑shift equipment inspections, including checking fluids (engine oil, coolant, hydraulic fluid), belts, tire pressure, lights, lights/reflectors, PTO connections, and safety guards to ensure machines are safe and ready for operation.
  • Calibrate and program precision agriculture systems such as GPS/RTK autosteer, yield monitors, section control, and variable-rate application controllers to ensure accurate seeding, fertilizing, and chemical application and to maximize input efficiency and yield.
  • Troubleshoot and perform basic mechanical repairs in the field (e.g., hydraulic hoses, belts, filters, battery service), coordinate with the maintenance team for more complex repairs, and maintain detailed maintenance and repair logs.
  • Monitor machine performance and field conditions during operation (engine load, fuel usage, soil moisture, cutting/harvesting rates) and make real-time adjustments to speed, depth, flow rates, and headers to reduce downtime and product loss.
  • Safely prepare, load, and unload implements—hitching/unhitching three-point linkages, attaching PTO drives, aligning trailers and grain carts, and securing loads for transport between fields or to the yard.
  • Follow all pesticide, herbicide, and fertilizer handling protocols when operating sprayers, including calibration, mixing instructions, proper PPE use, drift minimization, and application recordkeeping; maintain and provide applicator documentation when required.
  • Operate material-handling equipment (skid steer, telehandler, forklift) to move seed, fertilizer, fuel, and parts around the farm, ensuring secure stacking and safe pathways.
  • Execute precision planting and seeding operations, including seed depth and spacing adjustments, and validate seed meter performance to minimize skips and doubles and optimize stand establishment.
  • Conduct safe harvest operations: set combine/harvester settings for crop and moisture conditions, monitor grain loss, clean headers, and coordinate grain cart/transport logistics to maintain continuous harvesting flow.
  • Manage refueling, greasing, and routine service intervals on schedule, monitor and order consumables (filters, belts, lubricants), and maintain an organized parts inventory to minimize operational delays.
  • Maintain accurate field activity, maintenance, pesticide/fertilizer application, and equipment hours records using farm management software, onboard systems, or paper logs to support regulatory compliance and performance analysis.
  • Adhere to all farm health and safety policies and external regulations (OSHA, state pesticide laws), conduct safety briefings for seasonal staff, and enforce safe work practices around moving machinery and confined spaces.
  • Collaborate with agronomy and operations teams to plan daily field operations, determine optimal work windows based on weather and crop stage, and prioritize equipment deployment to meet production timelines.
  • Perform seasonal machine setup and teardown tasks: install harvest headers, store implements for winter, winterize engines and fuel systems, and prepare equipment for spring commissioning.
  • Assist with on‑farm installations and calibrations of irrigation pumps, fertilizer tanks, and other stationary equipment as needed, ensuring safe electrical and fluid connections and compliance with environmental controls.
  • Provide on-the-job training and mentoring to seasonal operators on equipment operation, safe hitching and un-hitching techniques, precision ag tools, and routine maintenance best practices.
  • Coordinate emergency field repairs and towing of disabled equipment, triage mechanical failures, document root causes, and recommend process or maintenance changes to prevent recurrence.
  • Support inventory and procurement activities by identifying required spare parts, providing specifications for replacements, and liaising with vendors for timely delivery to minimize season interruptions.
  • Implement environmental stewardship practices when operating equipment (minimizing soil compaction, avoiding operations in wet conditions, managing chemical runoff) to protect soil structure and water quality.
  • Inspect and maintain safety and emergency equipment—fire extinguishers, spill kits, first aid supplies—and participate in safety drills and training sessions.
  • Evaluate and test new tools, implements, or precision technologies in pilot scenarios, collect performance data, and provide recommendations for fleet upgrades or procedural changes.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist the maintenance team with shop work when not assigned to field operations, including parts replacement, fluid changes, and scheduled overhauls.
  • Support parts inventory management and documentation of warranty claims and vendor communications.
  • Help schedule equipment service appointments and coordinate off-site repairs or diagnostic visits with dealerships and service providers.
  • Contribute to operational planning meetings with managers and agronomists to improve field scheduling, reduce overlap, and optimize machinery utilization.
  • Provide basic crop scouting observations during field passes (noting emergence, pest pressure, or irrigation issues) and report concerns to the agronomy team.
  • Participate in seasonal safety training, compliance reviews, and continuous improvement initiatives focused on reducing equipment downtime and increasing field efficiency.
  • Maintain cleanliness and orderly storage of equipment, implements, and workshop areas to improve safety and reduce wear on tools.
  • Occasionally operate trucks or trailers for equipment transport between sites (appropriate licensing required).
  • Support loading and logistics for off‑farm deliveries, seed pickup, and dealer returns when required.
  • Facilitate training documentation for new hires or seasonal staff, including simple SOPs for common machine setups and safety checklists.
