Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Diagnose complex mechanical failures on tractors, combines, balers, sprayers, and tillage equipment using both hands-on inspection and computerized diagnostic tools; identify root causes and recommend cost-effective repairs and replacements.
  • Perform complete engine overhauls and mid-life services on diesel engines including compression testing, fuel system diagnosis, injector servicing, turbocharger inspection, and emission control troubleshooting to restore performance and meet manufacturer specifications.
  • Troubleshoot and repair hydraulic systems—pumps, valves, cylinders, hoses, and fittings—by performing pressure tests, identifying leaks, replacing seals, and calibrating flow/pressure settings to ensure safe, efficient operation.
  • Inspect, diagnose, and repair electrical systems and components including wiring harnesses, alternators, starters, sensors, control modules, CAN bus networks, lighting systems, and battery systems using volt/ohm meters and diagnostic software.
  • Service transmission and drivetrain components: clutch adjustments, gearbox repairs, final drive servicing, PTO shafts, U-joints, and differential work to maintain proper power transfer and reduce downtime.
  • Conduct preventative maintenance programs including scheduled oil and filter changes, lubrication, belt and chain adjustments, tire and track inspections, alignment checks, and seasonal preparation to maximize equipment life.
  • Fabricate and weld metal components, repair frames, mounts, hitches and custom brackets using MIG/TIG/stick welding processes and metalworking equipment to restore structural integrity to implements.
  • Install, calibrate and troubleshoot precision agriculture systems—GPS receivers, autosteer controllers, yield monitors, rate controllers, and ISOBUS devices—working with software updates and data transfer for optimized field performance.
  • Perform on-farm mobile service calls to diagnose and repair equipment under field conditions, ensuring rapid response to harvest- and planting-season emergencies while maintaining safe practices and clear communication with operators.
  • Read and interpret manufacturer service manuals, parts diagrams, schematics, and repair bulletins to perform accurate repairs and apply the latest technical updates and recalls.
  • Order, manage, and track parts inventory; source hard-to-find components, maintain parts bin organization, and recommend stocking levels to reduce turnaround time on repairs.
  • Maintain accurate service records, repair logs, and maintenance schedules in shop management systems, ensuring traceability of work performed and parts used for warranty and billing purposes.
  • Perform alignment and calibration of planter and seeding equipment, including row-unit adjustments, seed meter calibration, and closing system checks to ensure planting accuracy and yield optimization.
  • Diagnose and repair air conditioning, heating, and cab climate control systems to maintain operator comfort and system reliability during extended field operations.
  • Provide technical guidance and training to operators and junior technicians on correct equipment operation, daily checks, basic troubleshooting, and safety protocols to reduce misuse-related failures.
  • Implement safety checks and repairs for machine guarding, ROPS, seat belts, lights, mirrors, and emergency systems to ensure compliance with OSHA and manufacturer safety standards.
  • Carry out seasonal preparations including winterization and spring commissioning—draining systems, applying corrosion protection, storing attachments correctly, and re-commissioning equipment for the upcoming season.
  • Support warranty and claims processing by documenting defects, communicating with manufacturer representatives, and completing required paperwork to obtain proper credit or coverage.
  • Optimize equipment performance through preventive upgrades, retrofits, accessory installations, and aftermarket modifications such as weight distribution, tire/track choices, and implement integration.
  • Collaborate with parts, sales, and operations teams to plan shop workflow, prioritize emergency repairs versus scheduled maintenance, and communicate realistic timelines to customers and farm managers.
  • Test-drive and field-test repaired equipment under relevant load conditions to validate repair quality, tune performance parameters, and obtain operator sign-off on completed work.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe shop environment by following 5S practices, performing regular tool calibration and inspection, and ensuring proper disposal of oils, coolants, and hazardous materials.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist in developing and continuously improving preventive maintenance checklists and equipment lifecycle plans for the farm or dealership fleet.
  • Provide on-site operator training sessions and briefings about new equipment features, recommended maintenance intervals, and safe operation best practices.
  • Support parts counter with technical knowledge for customers seeking replacement components or troubleshooting guidance.
  • Participate in after-hours on-call rotation to support critical harvest and planting-period repairs, ensuring minimal production disruption.

  • Contribute to estimating labor and parts for service quotes, helping managers prepare bids for large repair jobs or fleet service contracts.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:
