Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Conduct regular on-farm visits and field scouting to diagnose crop health issues (nutrient deficiencies, pest and disease infestations, water stress), produce written field reports, and deliver immediate, practical treatment and mitigation plans tailored to the client’s crop, climate and production goals.

- Create customized crop protection strategies incorporating integrated pest management (IPM), biological controls, safe pesticide application guidance, resistance management and regulatory compliance to minimize crop loss and optimize input use.
- Provide irrigation and water management advisory including irrigation scheduling, water-efficient practices, drip and micro-irrigation design advice, and salinity/soil moisture assessments to increase water productivity and resilience under variable climates.
- Advise on precision agriculture tools and technologies (GPS-guided equipment, VRA/variable rate application, drones, remote sensing, soil and crop sensors) and lead the implementation and interpretation of geospatial and sensor data to optimize input placement and reduce costs.
- Deliver farm business advisory services including production budgeting, cost-benefit and break-even analysis, crop enterprise planning and recommendations to improve margins, cash flow and profitability for smallholder and commercial farms.
- Perform agronomic risk assessments and provide climate-smart recommendations (drought-tolerant varieties, conservation agriculture, cover cropping, residue management) to minimize yield variability and build resilience to climate change.
- Lead training sessions, field days and capacity building workshops for farmers, extension officers and agribusiness partners to transfer best practices, demonstrate new technologies and increase adoption of recommended agronomic practices.

- Advise on post-harvest handling, storage and quality management practices to reduce losses, preserve crop quality and improve marketability, including recommendations for drying, fumigation, storage structures and cold-chain where applicable.
- Support market linkages and value chain development by advising on product specifications, quality standards, harvest timing and aggregation strategies to help farmers access premium markets and buyers.
- Provide regulatory and certification support (organic, GAP, GlobalGAP, sustainability schemes) including gap analysis, corrective action plans and documentation support to help farms achieve and maintain certifications.
- Collaborate with research institutions, universities and extension networks to translate research findings into practical advisory materials and pilot new agronomic practices under local conditions.
- Use digital advisory platforms and mobile apps to deliver timely, scalable agronomy advisory messages, alerts (pest outbreaks, weather advisories), recommendations and record-keeping for farmer clients.
- Conduct crop variety selection and recommendation based on local agroecological suitability, disease resistance, yield potential and market demand, including multi-location adaptation insights.
- Monitor, evaluate and report on project and advisory outcomes, using measurable indicators (yield increases, input reduction, income improvement, adoption rates) and refine approaches based on monitoring data.
- Provide technical input into proposals, grant applications and program design for agriculture development projects, ensuring agronomic soundness and viability in scaling strategies.
- Advise on input sourcing and quality control, helping clients source certified seed, quality fertilizers and legitimate crop protection products and implement traceability measures to mitigate counterfeit inputs.
