Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

Conduct routine crop scouting and plant health assessments across fields and greenhouses, identify pests, diseases, nutrient deficiencies and abiotic stressors, and report findings with photo documentation and GPS-located notes for action by agronomists or farm managers.

Install, inspect, and maintain irrigation systems including drip lines, pivots, valves and pressure regulators; diagnose leaks, blockages and coverage issues and recommend repairs or adjustments to optimize water use efficiency.
Execute planting, transplanting, cultivation and scheduled harvesting tasks using mechanized and manual methods while ensuring planting depth, spacing and seed handling meet production specifications.
Monitor environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, soil moisture) using handheld meters, dataloggers and weather stations; record and transmit data to support irrigation scheduling, pest risk models and experimental trials.
Maintain accurate production, treatment and inventory records in farm management software, spreadsheets or paper logs, including pesticide application logs, fertilizer rates, labor, and equipment hours for regulatory compliance.
Prepare and manage experimental plots or demonstration areas, install randomized treatments, maintain buffer zones, and assist research staff with data collection, tagging, harvest sampling and trial maintenance.
Mix and prepare nutrient solutions, growth media and chemical formulations in a safe and documented manner for greenhouse propagation, fertigation and experimental treatments.
Perform routine laboratory tasks such as sample aliquoting, sieve sorting, drying, weighing, pH and EC testing, and basic microscopy for diagnostic support of field observations.
Assist with integrated pest management (IPM) strategies by deploying traps, monitoring beneficial insect populations, and executing non-chemical cultural controls and mechanical interventions.
Load, transport and safely store agricultural chemicals, seed, fertilizer and harvested product; manage inventory levels, rotate stock, and follow spill response and hazardous materials handling procedures.
Conduct post-harvest handling operations including grading, cleaning, packing and cold chain management to preserve quality and meet buyer or processing specifications.
Support nutrient management plans by calculating application rates, following soil test recommendations, and logging material usage to maintain environmental compliance and cost efficiency.
Run and interpret basic agronomic sensors and precision agriculture tools, including yield monitors, variable-rate controllers, soil moisture probes and GPS guidance systems to support site-specific management.
Train seasonal staff and interns on standard operating procedures (SOPs), safety protocols, equipment operation and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) to ensure consistent field performance.
Assist with fencing, animal handling and basic livestock care tasks on mixed operations, including feeding schedules, minor treatments and movement of animals for grazing or veterinary visits.
Conduct weekly safety inspections of field sites, greenhouses and storage areas; maintain MSDS/SDS files, update permit documentation, and participate in incident investigations and corrective action planning.
Liaise with vendors, extension agents and regulatory inspectors; prepare documentation for audits, support compliance checks and implement corrective measures as directed by management.
Prepare and present clear, concise daily or weekly field reports summarizing activities, observations, treatments, anomalies and resource needs to supervisors and cross-functional teams.
Maintain and improve onsite infrastructure including greenhouses, cold frames, storage sheds and roads to support safe, efficient production and research operations.

Secondary Functions

Support planning and procurement of supplies and parts by tracking inventory, placing reorders, and coordinating deliveries to ensure uninterrupted field operations.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:
