Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conduct comprehensive risk assessments for individual and group accident & health submissions by reviewing medical histories, claim experience, demographics, benefits design, and industry-specific exposures to determine insurability and appropriate terms.
  • Price and rate new business and renewal submissions using internal rating tools, underwriting guidelines, and actuarial inputs to ensure competitive, profitable quotes aligned with company profitability targets.
  • Interpret policy language, exclusions, and contract provisions for A&H products — including disability income, group health, stop-loss, supplemental accident, and travel medical — and apply them consistently to pricing and issuance decisions.
  • Underwrite complex and high-limit stop-loss submissions by analyzing historical claim trends, trend assumptions, retention structures, corridor limits, pooling arrangements, and reinsurance attachments to recommend effective structures.
  • Evaluate medical documentation, attending physician statements (APS), prescription history and diagnostic reports to perform medical underwriting and classify risk for applicants with significant health conditions.
  • Conduct multi-year renewal analyses, proposing appropriate rate adjustments, underwriting actions, and client-specific risk mitigation strategies based on claims experience, utilization trends, and market conditions.
  • Maintain and apply underwriting manuals, delegated authority matrices, and exception approval workflows; escalate appropriate cases to senior underwriters or committee when risk exceeds delegated limits.
  • Approve, decline, or counteroffer submissions and prepare detailed underwriting memos that document rationale, assumptions, exposures, and recommended terms for underwriting committee review.
  • Collaborate with actuarial and pricing teams to test and validate rating algorithms, experience-rating factors, credibility adjustments, and profitability analyses for product line performance monitoring.
  • Partner with sales, brokers, and account managers to explain underwriting decisions, negotiate terms, structure offers, and preserve relationships while protecting underwriting standards.
  • Monitor, analyze, and report on portfolio metrics including loss ratios, claim frequency/severity, persistency, and morbidity trends, providing recommendations to improve book quality and remediate adverse experience.
  • Assess and manage reinsurance needs and facilitate facultative or quota-share placements with reinsurance teams, providing submission packets, loss runs, exposures, and underwriting rationale.
  • Conduct vulnerability and compliance reviews to ensure underwriting processes and policy language meet regulatory requirements and internal governance standards for A&H products in relevant jurisdictions.
  • Utilize underwriting systems (e.g., Guidewire, ACORD, internal underwriting platforms) and Excel-based models to maintain accurate risk files, produce quotes, and automate standard decisioning where feasible.
  • Participate in underwriting committee meetings and present complex cases, including a clear articulation of liability drivers, pricing sensitivity, and recommended mitigation tactics.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of market developments, competitor pricing, legislative and regulatory changes, and clinical advances that impact underwriting assumptions and product design.
  • Perform targeted audits of issued policies and delegated relationships to ensure adherence to underwriting guidelines, data accuracy, and appropriate acceptance of risk.
  • Provide technical training and mentorship to junior underwriters and underwriting assistants, including case reviews, guideline interpretation, and best practice checklists.
  • Support corporate loss control and wellness initiative development by identifying common drivers of adverse claims and recommending targeted interventions (e.g., disease management, provider network changes, utilization management).
  • Manage project workstreams related to product launches, system implementations, or guideline updates, coordinating across product, IT, actuarial, and distribution teams to meet milestones.
  • Review and sign off on policy forms, endorsements, and contract amendments as they relate to underwriting exposures and negotiated account terms.
  • Maintain thorough documentation of underwriting decisions, conditions, and client communications in policy files to support audits and future decision-making.

Secondary Functions

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Finance, Actuarial Science, Health Sciences, Nursing, Public Health, or a related discipline.

Preferred Education:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree with coursework in actuarial science, risk management, health administration, or clinical fields; CIP (Chartered Insurance Professional) or similar underwriting certifications are a plus.
