Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Install, set up and commission residential and commercial air conditioning systems (split systems, packaged rooftop units, chillers, VRF/mini‑split systems) following manufacturer specifications, local codes and best practices to ensure reliable performance and warranty compliance.
- Diagnose mechanical, electrical and refrigerant-related faults using multimeters, clamp meters, manifold gauges, vacuum pumps, leak detectors and electronic analyzers; develop corrective action plans and complete repairs efficiently.
- Perform scheduled preventive maintenance including filter replacement, coil cleaning, condenser and evaporator inspections, fan and motor lubrication, belt tensioning, and condenser drain clearing to maximize system longevity and efficiency.
- Recover, reclaim and recharge refrigerants in strict compliance with EPA 608 regulations and company environmental policies; maintain accurate refrigerant logs and documentation for regulatory inspections.
- Read, interpret and work from electrical schematics, control diagrams, blueprints and installation manuals to wire, plumb and mount equipment correctly; verify electrical connections, phase orientation and control logic.
- Replace and repair components such as compressors, reversing valves, expansion valves, contactors, capacitors, relays, thermostats, sensors, blower motors and control boards while ensuring proper calibration and performance testing.
- Perform pressure testing, evacuation and vacuum procedures, leak detection and system charging during start‑up; validate system performance through temperature split, superheat/subcooling and amperage measurements.
- Troubleshoot HVAC control systems, thermostats, zone dampers, BACnet/Modbus interfaces and building automation systems; program and calibrate controls to achieve sequence-of-operations and energy targets.
- Conduct heat load calculations (Manual J) and duct design/load distribution (Manual D) or use approved software tools to recommend properly sized systems and energy-efficient solutions for new installs and retrofits.
- Provide professional, clear estimates and scope-of-work recommendations to customers and stakeholders, explaining repair options, expected outcomes, timelines, parts costs, warranties and energy-saving benefits.
- Maintain accurate and timely service records, job tickets and asset documentation using mobile field service management software; upload photos, test data and sign-offs to ensure traceability and compliance.
- Adhere to OSHA, NFPA and company safety standards on every job site: use PPE, follow lockout/tagout procedures, manage fall protection, and conduct job safety analyses before fieldwork begins.
- Mentor and coach junior technicians and apprentices by demonstrating best practices, reviewing completed work for quality, and providing hands-on training in troubleshooting and safety.
- Coordinate with project managers, electricians, plumbers and other trade partners to sequence work, resolve site issues and meet project milestones while maintaining a clean and professional job site.
- Inspect and repair condensate drain systems, pumps and pan heaters to prevent water intrusion and mold risk; implement corrective actions for recurring drainage problems.
- Perform ductwork repairs, modifications and sealing; install and insulate duct runs, test for airflow balance and perform zoning adjustments to meet comfort and efficiency targets.
- Recommend and implement energy conservation measures such as variable frequency drives (VFD) installation, thermostat upgrades, system retrofits and maintenance plans that lower operating costs and improve system performance.
- Manage parts inventory and tools: order parts, track warranties and returns, maintain stock levels on service vans to minimize downtime and repeat trips.
- Respond to emergency service calls and participate in rotational on-call schedules; diagnose urgent failures and perform temporary or permanent repairs to restore critical HVAC function.
- Ensure compliance with local building and refrigerant regulations, secure necessary permits and coordinate with inspectors during new installations and major repairs.
- Execute commissioning checklists and prepare detailed start-up and performance reports; create punch lists and follow through to project acceptance.
- Dispose of hazardous waste and used refrigerants in accordance with environmental and company policies; maintain manifests and disposal documentation.
- Use digital diagnostic tools and mobile apps to capture system performance data, trend historical information and support remote troubleshooting where applicable.
Secondary Functions

Required Skills & Competencies
