Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

Direct and sequence arriving and departing aircraft in airport terminal areas and en-route sectors using radar surveillance and non-radar procedures to maintain safe separation standards in accordance with ICAO/FAA regulations and local air traffic control orders.
Monitor radar displays, electronic flight-strips, and flight progress strips to identify traffic conflicts, develop resolution strategies, issue tactical instructions, and effect traffic flow adjustments while minimizing controller-induced delays.
Issue timely and unambiguous ATC clearances and instructions (including route, altitude, speed and frequency changes), using standard ICAO/FAA phraseology and read-back/hear-back procedures to confirm pilot compliance.
Provide traffic advisories, approach sequencing, runway crossing and hold short instructions, and visual/IFR separation services to pilots while coordinating with tower, ground, and adjacent approach or en-route sectors.
Manage runway operations, including sequencing for landings and departures, runway occupancy monitoring, ground movement control, and immediate response to runway incursions to preserve runway safety margins.
Coordinate with airport operations, airline dispatch, emergency services, and airfield maintenance to manage contingencies such as runway closures, bird strikes, pavement issues and simultaneous irregular operations.
Plan and execute traffic flow initiatives, including altitude and speed restrictions, flow control programs, and reroutes during high demand, adverse weather, or special events to optimize capacity while maintaining safety.
Conduct handoffs and coordination with adjacent control facilities, approach/tower units, and military control agencies to transfer control responsibility and ensure continuity of safe separation and clearances.
Apply meteorological information (METAR, TAF, SIGMETs, AIRMETs, wind shear reports) to modify approach/departure procedures, issue pilot advisories, and coordinate with aerodrome authorities during adverse weather operations.
Evaluate NOTAMs, temporary flight restrictions (TFR), special activity airspace, and airshows or VIP movements to implement airspace restrictions, reroutes, or traffic advisories as required.
Execute emergency and abnormal procedures, including priority handling of Mayday/Pan, hijack, medical emergencies, engine failures, fuel emergencies, inflight fires, and coordinate search and rescue (SAR) responses with ATS and emergency agencies.
Use automation tools (Flight Data Processing Systems, radar data processing, electronic flight strips, CPDLC, ADS-B displays) to manage traffic, validate flight plans, and detect conflicts proactively.
Maintain accurate and auditable operational logs, shift reports, handover briefings, and incident reports to support safety investigations and continuous improvement.
Conduct vectoring, speed control, and altitude assignments to sequence aircraft for final approach, applying stabilized approach criteria and instrument procedures (SIDs, STARs, ILS, RNAV).
Supervise and mentor junior controllers, providing constructive feedback, on-the-job training, and remediation to ensure compliance with SOPs and certification standards.
Participate in airport emergency exercises, safety boards, and incident debriefs to share lessons learned and to update procedures, briefings, and checklists.
Review and validate flight plans for departures and arrivals, handle coordination for special flights (medical evacuations, ferry flights, VIP movements), and process changes to filed routings.
Enforce airspace restrictions and special use airspace procedures, including coordination for unmanned aerial systems (UAS/drones), aerial work, and temporary segregated areas.
Apply human factors best practices to mitigate fatigue, maintain attention, reduce error potential, and ensure clear communications during high workload periods.
Ensure compliance with air traffic regulations, local orders, safety management systems (SMS), and all applicable national and international standards while performing operational duties.

Secondary Functions

Provide technical input for procedure development teams, validating proposed SID/STAR changes and airspace redesigns from an operational perspective.
Assist in the preparation of safety reports, occurrence reports and support investigations by providing operational logs, radar playback analysis, and timeline reconstructions.
Support testing and operational evaluation of new ATC automation tools, voice communication systems, and surveillance upgrades by providing user feedback and operational scenarios.

Required Skills & Competencies

Educational Background

Minimum Education:
