Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Read, interpret and apply engineering blueprints, wiring diagrams, 3D CAD prints, detailed assembly drawings and GD&T specifications to perform precise airframe and component assembly in accordance with engineering release documentation.
  • Perform hands-on installation of metallic and composite airframe structures including bulkheads, stringers, skins, ribs and frames using industry-standard fasteners while maintaining specified tolerances and alignment.
  • Execute solid rivet, blind rivet, Hi-Lok, and threaded fastener installations using pneumatic rivet guns, rivet squeezers, countersinking drills and torque wrenches while applying correct rivet patterns and filler/sealant where specified.
  • Conduct composite layup, core installation and cure processes including vacuum bagging, resin infusion, prepreg layups and oven/autoclave handling, strictly following manufacturer cure cycles and material handling procedures.
  • Prepare surfaces and apply structural adhesives, sealants and primers, and perform controlled dispensing and cure verification to ensure proper bonding and corrosion protection of assemblies.
  • Trim, fit and modify sheet metal parts and subassemblies using hand tools, power tools and light fabrication techniques to achieve required fit and finish while adhering to drawing tolerances.
  • Install and route electrical harnesses, avionics components and associated hardware, secure connectors and backshells, and verify harness continuity and routing conforms to engineering and safety standards.
  • Use precision measuring instruments including calipers, micrometers, height gauges and torque wrenches to verify dimensions and torque values, and document inspection results to maintain traceability.
  • Perform in-process dimensional checks, laydown inspections and final assembly verifications including first article inspection (FAI) readiness, ensuring parts meet acceptance criteria before release.
  • Execute nondestructive inspection (NDT) tasks such as visual inspection, dye penetrant (fluorescent and visible), eddy current and magnetic particle inspections per established procedures and report findings to quality engineering.
  • Setup and rig components to tooling, jigs and fixtures; check and adjust fixture alignment and datum references to ensure consistent repeatability across assemblies.
  • Troubleshoot assembly issues, escalate discrepant conditions, propose and document engineering deviation requests (EDRs) or material review board (MRB) submissions when nonconforming parts are identified.
  • Maintain accurate production travelers, SAP/MES/ERP records, work orders and inspection documentation, including sign-offs for specific operations and traceability of serial numbers and lot codes.
  • Perform final system functional tests and operational checks (mechanical motion, control surface rigging, ground power checks) per test procedures and sign off on completion and readiness for next process.
  • Adhere to FAA, EASA and company regulatory requirements, airworthiness directives and repair station procedures where applicable, ensuring all work meets certification standards.
  • Execute FOD prevention practices, maintain shop cleanliness, organize tooling and consumables, and perform pre- and post-shift tool accountability and calibration checks to support safety and quality.
  • Participate in continuous improvement, lean manufacturing and 5S initiatives to reduce cycle time, eliminate waste, and improve assembly ergonomics and throughput.
  • Mentor and train junior assemblers and apprentices on shop procedures, tooling use, safety practices, quality expectations and best practices for aircraft assembly processes.
  • Support root cause investigations, corrective actions and CAPA implementations when defects or process deviations occur, coordinating with quality and engineering to validate fixes.
  • Complete required safety and job-specific training (hazmat handling, confined space, hoisting/rigging, fall protection), follow lockout/tagout procedures and use personal protective equipment (PPE) consistently.
  • Perform scheduled maintenance and minor repair work on fixtures, jigs and production tools, and coordinate with maintenance teams for complex repairs or replacements.
  • Participate in production planning discussions, provide assembly time feedback, and assist material kitting or line balancing activities to support on-time delivery commitments.
  • Execute weight and balance checks and verify installed component weights and locations against engineering documentation for accurate aircraft configuration control.
  • Support flight test and final acceptance activities by preparing assemblies for ground run-ups, taxi tests and flight test instrumentation installation when required.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist quality and engineering with root cause data collection during inspections and provide hands-on feedback to improve manufacturability and assembly instructions.
  • Coordinate with material control and purchasing to report shortages, damaged goods or nonconforming supplier parts and support supplier corrective action follow-up.
  • Help maintain and calibrate hand tools, torque wrenches, measuring instruments and jigs, and log calibration certificates in compliance with control requirements.
  • Provide input for standard work documents, assembly instructions and training aids; update job cards to reflect process improvements or corrective actions.
  • Support cross-functional audits and supplier inspections by preparing documentation, part samples and demonstrating assembly processes to auditors.
  • Participate in continuous learning sessions on new materials, updated engineering specifications and regulatory changes to maintain current competencies and certifications.
  • Assist in the preparation and staging of kits and subassemblies for upcoming production builds and help ensure accuracy of pick lists and BOM compliance.
  • Support ergonomics and workstation improvement initiatives by testing jig modifications or new tooling and documenting impact on cycle time and quality.
  • Participate in scheduled shutdowns or production changeovers, helping to disassemble, reconfigure or validate fixtures and tooling as needed.
  • Contribute to digital manufacturing adoption by inputting accurate work data into MES systems and proposing automation opportunities for repetitive tasks.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Expert ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, detailed blueprints, wiring schematics and GD&T tolerancing (ASME Y14.5).
  • Proficiency with mechanical fastening methods: solid rivets, Hi-Lok, blind rivets, bolts and installation tools (pneumatic rivet guns, rivet squeezers, rivet bucking bars).
  • Composite fabrication skills: prepreg layup, adhesive bonding, vacuum bagging, autoclave/oven cure processes and handling of composite materials.
  • Nondestructive testing (NDT) knowledge: visual inspection, fluorescent and visible dye penetrant (PT), magnetic particle (MT) and eddy current inspection basics.
  • Strong experience using precision hand and measuring tools: micrometers, calipers, height gauges, bore gauges and dial indicators.
  • Torque application and verification skills: torque wrenches, torque tables and evidence marking for critical fasteners.
  • Proficient with shop equipment: drills, countersinks, grinders, shears, deburring tools, and safe use of power tools.
  • Familiarity with aircraft wiring harness routing, tie-downs, connector installation and basic avionics installation practices.
  • Experience using manufacturing execution systems (MES), ERP systems (SAP) or electronic work orders for production and quality documentation.
  • Knowledge of production processes including first article inspection (FAI), MRB, NCR processes, and corrective action reporting (CAPA).
  • Understanding of FAA/EASA regulations and regulatory documentation requirements for part traceability and airworthiness (where applicable).
  • Basic fabrication and sheet metal skills including trimming, forming, and fitting to blueprint tolerances.
  • Ability to perform simple root-cause troubleshooting on mechanical and fitment issues, and to implement temporary corrections or coordinate engineering fixes.
  • Familiarity with safety standards, hazardous materials handling, and workplace safety best practices.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High school diploma or GED with vocational or on-the-job training in aircraft assembly, composites, sheet metal or related trades.

Preferred Education:

  • Technical certificate, associate degree or diploma in Aerospace Manufacturing Technology, Aircraft Maintenance Technology, Mechanical Technology, or Composites Fabrication.
  • FAA A&P certificate or military aircraft maintenance training is a strong plus for roles involving systems work or MRO environments.
