Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Marshal arriving and departing aircraft using standardized hand signals and illuminated wands, ensuring safe positioning, chock placement, and clearances between aircraft and ground obstacles while maintaining constant situational awareness.
  • Perform pushback and towing operations with tugs and tow bars, coordinating with flight crew and marshallers to execute safe, precise pushback maneuvers according to airline SOPs and airport ground control instructions.
  • Load, unload and sort passenger baggage and airfreight using belt loaders, cargo loaders, dollies, and pallet movers; ensure correct transfer of bags to/from the correct flights, maintain breakage prevention, and verify bag tags and ULD labels for accuracy.
  • Build, break down and secure Unit Load Devices (ULDs) and pallets for international and domestic flights, following weight distribution and restraint procedures to comply with weight-and-balance requirements.
  • Conduct aircraft servicing tasks including connecting/disconnecting ground power units (GPU), airstart carts, potable water servicing, lavatory servicing, and replenishing catering and cabin supplies while adhering to contamination and safety controls.
  • Operate a variety of ground service equipment (belt loaders, high-loaders, de-icing trucks, towing tractors, forklifts, and ground power units) safely and in accordance with manufacturer guidance and company training.
  • Execute aircraft de-icing and anti-icing procedures or assist de-icing crews: prepare aircraft, monitor application operations, and document fluid usage and times to uphold safety and regulatory requirements.
  • Perform ramp safety inspections prior to and after gate operations: check wheel chocks, safety cones, ground locks, towbar stowage, and GSE condition; immediately report hazards, defects, or missing safety items.
  • Monitor and handle hazardous materials (IATA and airline-specific DG handling), accept or reject restricted items, label and segregate dangerous goods, and complete required documentation per hazardous materials regulations.
  • Communicate via UHF/VHF radios and headsets with flight crews, ground controllers, and station personnel to coordinate gate changes, aircraft servicing, and pushback activities while maintaining clear, concise radio discipline.
  • Follow and enforce airport security and access control procedures: verify credentials, maintain sterile area integrity, and report unusual or suspicious activity to supervisory staff and airport authorities.
  • Record operational data including baggage irregularities, lost/damaged property, load and trim logs, pushback times, and delay causes in the airline’s ground operations system or logbooks for operational and regulatory compliance.
  • Load and secure bulk and palletized cargo, special baggage (sports equipment, oversized items), and mail; ensure cargo is restrained, identified, and manifest data is accurately reflected for flight operations.
  • Support passenger assistance operations at the ramp such as wheelchair/bariatric transport to/from the aircraft, escorting special needs customers, and coordinating with gate agents for timely boarding and deplaning.
  • Execute expedited turnarounds under tight schedules: prioritize critical tasks, coordinate multi-discipline crews, and escalate bottlenecks to ramp supervisors to prevent flight delays.
  • Follow weight and balance procedures by verifying cargo placement, recalculating load plans if necessary, and coordinating with load planners to maintain aircraft center of gravity limits and fuel planning.
  • Participate in emergency response and irregular operations, including ramp evacuations, spill containment, wildlife strikes, and aircraft ground incidents, following airline emergency plans and first-responder coordination.
  • Conduct pre-shift equipment checks and post-shift GSE returns: inspect brakes, hydraulics, lights, fueling interfaces, and report maintenance needs or safety defects using standard maintenance logging systems.
  • Train, mentor and coach new ramp hires and seasonal employees on safe operating procedures, company policies, and performance expectations; assist in readiness drills, competency assessments, and on-the-job evaluations.
  • Maintain housekeeping on the ramp, gate and equipment storage areas: remove debris, secure loose equipment, prevent FOD (foreign object debris), and implement daily FOD walk procedures to protect aircraft engines and structures.
  • Collaborate with cargo agents, station managers and customer service to investigate and reconcile baggage discrepancies, to facilitate quick resolution of misrouted, delayed or damaged items and to support customer recovery when needed.
  • Adhere to occupational health and safety standards, participate in safety briefings, and apply personal protective equipment (PPE) consistently to reduce workplace injuries and comply with airport and airline safety programs.
  • Support seasonal operations and special event ramp staffing plans, including international arrivals, irregular weather events, and large sports or concert charters that require surge capacity and rapid coordination.
  • Maintain accurate documentation for audit and compliance purposes: training records, dangerous goods forms, incident reports, and operational logs to support internal quality assurance and regulator inspections.
  • Coordinate with fuelers, catering vendors and maintenance teams to schedule servicing windows and ensure all ground services are completed prior to flight pushback without compromising safety.
  • Execute gate change procedures including repositioning of equipment, rapid communication to teams, and confirming new gate assignments to minimize passenger disruption and maintain on-time performance.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist ground operations leadership in continuous improvement initiatives by providing frontline feedback on turnaround bottlenecks, GSE placement, and staffing optimization.

Hard Skills (Technical)

Educational Background
