Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Load and unload passenger baggage and cargo from aircraft accurately and efficiently, following airline load plans and weight-and-balance instructions to maintain flight safety and on-time departures.
  • Inspect baggage tags, flight numbers, routing codes and passenger receipts to ensure each piece is routed to the correct flight, and verify final destination matches airline documentation.
  • Operate ground support equipment (GSE) — including belt loaders, tow tractors/tugs, baggage carts, dollies, and cargo loaders — in a safe, certified manner while following manufacturer and airline operating procedures.
  • Physically lift, push, pull and maneuver heavy bags and containers, using proper body mechanics and approved lifting aids to minimize risks and prevent injury.
  • Perform visual and manual inspections of baggage for damage, prohibited items, live animals, and dangerous goods; isolate and report suspect or damaged items to supervision and security per TSA/IATA rules.
  • Scan barcodes and input baggage movement and status information into airline/airport tracking systems and handheld devices to maintain accurate chain-of-custody and support customer inquiries.
  • Stage, sort and transfer baggage between terminal conveyors, bag rooms, cargo holds and ground transport vehicles during peak flows and irregular operations.
  • Strictly adhere to security protocols including access control, identification checks, prohibited item detection, and immediate reporting of suspicious activity to security or TSA personnel.
  • Follow aircraft safety zones and ramp safety rules — maintaining clear communication with flight crews, marshallers and line staff to prevent jetblast, propwash and foreign object debris (FOD) incidents.
  • Participate in pre- and post-shift equipment checks, fueling/charging procedures, and basic maintenance actions; report mechanical faults or safety issues to GSE technicians and supervisors.
  • Accurately log lost, delayed, damaged or mishandled baggage events, complete incident/irregularity reports, and assist with chain-of-custody documentation for claims resolution.
  • Handle special baggage types (oversize, fragile, priority, perishable, medical equipment, wheelchairs, sports equipment, musical instruments) using approved procedures and appropriate packaging or restraint.
  • Coordinate with airline operations, ticketing, and customer service teams to prioritize connections, late-arriving bags and special passenger needs (e.g., unaccompanied minors, disabled passengers).
  • Execute aircraft bulk loading and ULD (unit load device) handling for widebody and freighter aircraft, including correctly positioning containers and restraints per load plans.
  • Support irregular operations (IROPS) such as delays, cancellations and diversions by re-sorting baggage, creating new transfer manifests, and expediting priority shipments.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of bag rooms, ramps and staging areas, conducting routine FOD checks and immediate removal of debris to preserve safety and operational continuity.
  • Enforce weight and balance limits by accurately distributing baggage and cargo on containers and aircraft holds, escalating discrepancies to load control or dispatch.
  • Engage in on-the-job safety briefings, toolbox talks and mandatory security/TSA training; demonstrate compliance with company SOPs and regulatory checklists during audits.
  • Provide professional frontline customer service when encountering passengers at aircraft, baggage claim or in lost & found interactions — documenting issues and escalating to customer service teams when required.
  • Support emergency response and evacuation procedures when necessary, including safe handling of hazardous materials (as permitted), reporting fuel spills, and assisting in ramp incident containment.
  • Participate in cross-training to cover multiple ground roles (ramp, gate, cargo, baggage services) to increase operational flexibility and staff coverage during high-demand periods.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist with reconciliation of baggage counts against flight manifests and luggage reconciliation reports during post-flight audits.
  • Support lost & found processing — tagging, logging and storing unclaimed items and coordinating transfer to airline property services.
  • Help train and mentor seasonal and new hires on safe handling techniques, correct use of GSE and airline-specific bag tagging and routing systems.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to reduce mishandled baggage rates and optimize ramp workflows.
  • Conduct inventory checks and request replenishment of supplies (straps, nets, cart covers, protective pads) to ensure readiness for operations.
  • Collaborate on security screenings and random checks when directed by TSA or airline security teams.

  • Support special event and peak travel planning by assisting supervisors with manpower needs, shift swaps and staging plans.
  • Assist in coordinating interline transfers and bag transfers between gates and remote stands, ensuring timely movement and documentation.
  • Perform light maintenance tasks on baggage carts and dollies (greasing, tire checks, basic repairs) and escalate complex repairs to maintenance teams.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proficient operation and safe maneuvering of ground support equipment (GSE): belt loaders, tugs/tow tractors, conveyor belts, and ULD/cargo loaders.
