Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Conduct thorough passenger screening at checkpoints using X-ray machines, Advanced Imaging Technology (AIT), explosive trace detection (ETD) swabs and manual pat-downs in strict compliance with TSA regulations and airport Standard Operating Procedures.
- Operate, troubleshoot and perform daily calibration checks on security screening equipment (X-ray baggage scanners, AIT devices, ETD units) and report malfunctions to maintenance or technical support to maintain continuous checkpoint operations.
- Perform carry-on and checked baggage inspections, including identification and handling of prohibited items, irregularities, and potential threats while maintaining chain-of-custody procedures for confiscated items and evidence.
- Monitor and control access to sterile and secure areas of the airport, verify credentials and access badges, and enforce perimeter and ramp security through checkpoints, gates and access control systems.
- Conduct random and targeted secondary screening of passengers and property in accordance with risk-based protocols, TSA watchlist guidance and documented screening procedures.
- Operate CCTV and other surveillance systems to identify suspicious behavior, coordinate response for security breaches and provide real-time situational awareness to supervisory staff and law enforcement partners.
- Respond immediately to security incidents, alarms and breaches; coordinate with airport police, TSA law enforcement officers and emergency responders; and take initial actions to secure the scene and support investigations.
- Prepare accurate incident reports, daily logs, chain-of-custody records and other documentation using electronic reporting systems to ensure auditability and regulatory compliance.
- Maintain current knowledge of TSA directives, federal aviation security regulations (e.g., 49 CFR where applicable), airport emergency plans and threat advisories; attend briefings and incorporate updates into screening operations.
- Provide exemplary customer service by explaining screening procedures, diffusing passenger concerns, accommodating special needs or medical devices and ensuring compliance while minimizing delays.
- Execute crowd control and queue management during peak travel times, flight disruptions or special events to maintain orderly screening lanes and passenger flow.
- Conduct routine patrols of sterile areas, concourses and secure perimeters to detect suspicious objects, unauthorized access or safety hazards and escalate issues according to SOPs.
- Facilitate checkpoint reconfiguration and lane management to optimize throughput while maintaining adherence to security protocols and alarm resolution procedures.
- Administer first aid, CPR or basic life support as needed until medical personnel arrive; document medical incidents in accordance with airport policy.
- Participate in covert and overt screening operations, random bag checks, and credential verification initiatives to support anti-terrorism and anti-smuggling efforts.
- Provide on-the-job training, mentoring and performance feedback to new hires and temporary staff; assist supervisors with shift briefings and competency assessments.
- Maintain professional appearance, demeanor and fitness for duty; comply with background check, drug screening and certification requirements such as state security licenses or TSA-approved training modules.
- Support special events, VIP movements and charter operations by executing elevated security procedures, coordinating lane closures and providing point-of-contact communications for event stakeholders.
- Inspect and secure lost & found and unattended property; process suspicious packages following established bomb-threat and unattended baggage protocols.
- Enforce airport policies related to smoking, prohibited items, and conduct in secure areas; issue warnings, escalate to law enforcement or perform detentions when legally warranted.
- Collaborate with airline partners, airport operations and tenant agencies to resolve operational conflicts, accommodate unique passenger situations and implement temporary security measures during irregular operations.

- Participate in ongoing training, certifications and drills (e.g., active shooter, evacuation, de-escalation, and emergency response exercises) to ensure readiness for evolving threats.
