Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Conduct scheduled and unscheduled airside safety patrols of runways, taxiways, aprons and surrounding areas to identify hazards (FOD, wildlife attractants, pavement deterioration), log findings, and initiate corrective action in accordance with airport Safety Management System (SMS) and local civil aviation authority regulations.
- Enforce airside access control and vehicle permit policies by checking credentials, issuing or revoking AOA vehicle permits, validating driving licences/airside training records, and escorting unauthorized personnel or vehicles off the movement area to maintain compliance and security.
- Perform rigorous runway and strip inspections (pre-flight, post-movement and periodic inspections) including runway surface condition reports, foreign object debris (FOD) sweeps, lighting and signage checks, and immediate notification to Air Traffic Control (ATC) and operations teams when hazards are identified.
- Coordinate real-time airside activity with ATC, airlines, ground handlers and maintenance contractors to ensure safe sequencing of vehicles and aircraft movements, arranging stop/start permissions, and managing temporary works/permit-to-work within the AOA.
- Lead incident response on the airside by providing first response coordination: secure scene, liaise with ARFF, ATC and operations, collect witness statements, preserve evidence, and manage immediate safety mitigations until investigators arrive.
- Conduct thorough incident and near-miss investigations, prepare root cause analyses and safety reports, upload mandatory notifications into the SMS database, and track corrective action plans to closure to reduce recurrence.
- Deliver airside safety briefings, toolbox talks and targeted training for ramp personnel, contractors and site visitors on AOA rules, vehicle circulation, radio procedures, and emergency response protocols to promote safe behaviours and regulatory compliance.
- Manage and audit contractor airside works including issuance and oversight of permit-to-work, ensuring contractors comply with site-specific safety plans, method statements, protective equipment requirements, and temporary traffic management.
- Administer and operate airside vehicle management systems including vehicle marking, lighting requirements, vehicle inspections, and enforcement of vehicle speeds and parking rules to reduce collision risk and ensure safe apron operations.
- Monitor airside CCTV, ground movement sensors and reporting systems to support incident detection, escalate critical events, and provide accurate situational reports to operations and security teams.
- Maintain and update detailed logs, daily inspection checklists, incident reports and regulatory records; ensure data quality and timely upload to SMS, regulatory reporting portals, and airport management systems.
- Implement and support FOD control programs including routine FOD walks, FOD bins and segregation practices, training campaigns, and measurable reduction initiatives, reporting FOD metrics and trends to leadership.
- Liaise with wildlife control, environmental services and local authorities to identify and mitigate wildlife hazards and environmental risks that could compromise aircraft safety during critical movement phases.
- Conduct audits and compliance checks against ICAO Annex 14, national CAA guidance, airport manual standards and internal SOPs; prepare findings and recommendations for remediation and regulatory submission.
- Support airside emergency exercises and drills (full-scale and table-top) by developing scenarios, coordinating multi-agency participation, capturing lessons learned, and improving response plans and checklists.
- Oversee the installation, maintenance and correct use of airfield signs, markings, lighting and temporary works to ensure conformity with operational safety standards and minimize pilot/vehicle confusion.
- Provide technical input on airside works planning and projects (pavement repairs, lighting upgrades, drainage works) by reviewing method statements, ensuring safe phasing to protect movement areas and minimizing operational disruptions.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of national and international aviation safety regulations (ICAO, FAA, EASA where applicable) and translate regulatory changes into practical operational requirements for airside teams.
- Coordinate hazardous materials (HAZMAT) incidents on the airside including spill containment, isolation of affected areas, notification of specialist response teams, and documentation of corrective actions in line with environmental and safety requirements.
- Conduct regular performance measurement and KPI reporting for airside safety (incidents, FOD counts, permit compliance, inspection completion rates) and present findings with proposed risk reduction initiatives to airport leadership.
- Support procurement and maintenance of airside safety equipment (high-visibility apparel, PPE, signage, FOD sweepers, radios) and maintain inventories to ensure readiness and compliance.
- Mentor junior airside staff and act as subject matter expert for airside safety policy, including contributing to the development and review of SOPs, work instructions and training materials tailored to the airport environment.
- Manage stakeholder communications during airside incidents and planned works by drafting notifications, NOTAM recommendations, and coordination messages to airlines, ground handlers and regulatory bodies to minimize disruption and maintain transparency.
- Investigate and implement technology enhancements (vehicle gates, CCTV analytics, FOD detection systems, SMS modules) to drive airside safety performance improvements and support data-driven decision-making.
Secondary Functions
- Support continuous improvement initiatives by contributing to risk assessments, safety committees and cross-departmental workshops focused on operational efficiency and hazard mitigation.
- Assist with scheduling and administrative support for airside training, permit renewals, badge issuance and record maintenance within compliance management systems.
- Participate in procurement evaluation for airside safety tools and equipment by providing operational requirements and performance feedback to the procurement team.
- Provide subject-matter input for airport emergency plans, aerodrome manuals and operational contingency documents during review cycles.
- Support ad-hoc safety communication campaigns (seasonal wildlife risk, winter operations, peak traffic periods) to raise awareness and operational readiness among airside stakeholders.
- Participate in regulatory inspections and audits as the airside representative, compiling evidence, supporting auditors and implementing follow-up actions.
- Assist operations with traffic flow planning during construction or special events on the airside, ensuring temporary controls are implemented and communicated effectively.
- Deliver observations and coaching to ground handling teams during peak operations to promote compliance with safe apron procedures and efficient turnaround processes.
