Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  1. Survey customer premises, interpret site drawings and recommend optimal layouts for intruder alarm, fire alarm, CCTV and access control systems based on risk assessments and spec requirements.
  2. Install alarm control panels, detectors, sirens, call points, door contacts, motion sensors, power supplies and ancillary devices according to manufacturer instructions and industry standards.
  3. Accurately route, terminate and secure low-voltage cabling (CAT5/6, coax, alarm cable) and create neat, code-compliant cable runs, containment and fixings in domestic, commercial and industrial settings.
  4. Commission and program alarm control panels and peripherals (e.g., Texecom, Pyronix, Honeywell, DSC) including user codes, zone parameters, entry/exit delays and reporting paths.
  5. Install, configure and test CCTV IP and analogue camera systems, recorders (NVR/DVR), lens adjustments, field-of-view alignment and remote viewing capabilities for client handover.
  6. Fit and wire access control hardware including readers, electric locks, maglocks, exit devices and integrate with alarm panels and networked systems as required.
  7. Perform loop testing, continuity checks, insulation resistance testing and earth bonding where necessary; use multimeters, insulation testers and cable testers to verify electrical integrity.
  8. Configure alarm signalling and communicator options (diallers, PSTN, GSM/GPRS, IP/SIA format) to connect sites to monitoring stations or client monitoring solutions.
  9. Execute system functional tests and full commissioning documentation, log test results, produce as-built schematics and generate client sign-offs and certification paperwork.
  10. Conduct routine service visits and reactive maintenance to diagnose faults, replace defective components, and restore systems to full operational condition with clear fault records.
  11. Troubleshoot intermittent and complex issues involving wiring faults, power problems, interference, and software/configuration errors across multi-vendor systems.
  12. Ensure all installations and maintenance activities comply with relevant standards and regulations (e.g., BS 5839 for fire systems, BS 8243 for intruder alarm verification, BS 7671 wiring regs).
  13. Liaise with clients, site managers and the monitoring centre to schedule works, explain system operation and provide on-site user training and system demonstrations.
  14. Prepare accurate job sheets, service reports, timesheets and materials lists using company mobile apps or paperwork; raise purchase requests for consumables and spares.
  15. Maintain stock control of spares, test equipment and consumables in company vehicle; ensure vehicles are stocked, tidy and comply with PPE and health & safety requirements.
  16. Complete PAT testing and battery health checks as part of service routines; replace sealed lead-acid batteries and ensure correct disposal and recycling of old batteries.
  17. Apply risk assessments, method statements (RAMS) and safe working practices, including working at height, confined spaces and live equipment where necessary.
  18. Integrate security systems with building management systems, IP networks and third-party devices, ensuring correct IP configuration, NAT/port forwarding and secure remote access.
  19. Support commissioning engineers on complex projects, assist with multi-trade coordination on sites and escalate design issues or non-compliance to project managers.
  20. Keep up to date with manufacturer firmware upgrades, programming tools, industry best practices and attend required training and certification renewals.

Secondary Functions

  • Provide technical support and remote troubleshooting to colleagues and monitoring stations outside of scheduled visits.
  • Assist sales and estimating teams by providing field-level input on installation feasibility, site-specific constraints and approximate material quantities.
  • Help mentor junior technicians and apprentices on best practices for cable management, system programming and customer service.
  • Participate in on-call rotation for emergency callouts and out-of-hours fault resolution for key clients or service contracts.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives by suggesting tools, techniques or materials that reduce installation time and improve reliability.
  • Maintain accurate CRM and job management entries including photos, test evidence and client communications for audit and warranty purposes.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proficient in installing and commissioning intruder alarm systems (manufacturer experience: Texecom, Honeywell, DSC, Pyronix).
  • Strong knowledge of fire alarm principles and relevant standards (BS 5839 series) and experience installing fire detection devices and call points.
  • Competence in CCTV installation, IP networking fundamentals, NVR/DVR setup, PoE and remote viewing setup.
  • Skilled in access control hardware installation, wiring, relay logic, and integration with alarm systems and door furniture.
  • Proficient with low-voltage wiring techniques, cable termination, crimping, soldering, and cable management best practices.
  • Experienced in using test equipment: multimeter, insulation tester, cable certifier, tone & probe, loop tester and PAT tester.
  • Understanding of alarm signalling methods (PSTN, GSM/GPRS, IP) and experience configuring communicators and reporting formats (SIA, CID).
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, system drawings, block diagrams and manufacturer installation manuals.
  • Experience in fault diagnosis, remedial repairs, component replacement and system upgrades on legacy and modern security systems.
  • Familiarity with Windows/Mac-based programming utilities, mobile configuration apps and remote access tools for system programming and diagnostics.
  • Working knowledge of BS 7671 (IET Wiring Regulations) or experience working alongside qualified electricians to ensure compliance.
  • Competent in producing commissioning certificates, service reports, maintenance logs and billing documentation.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • GCSEs (or equivalent) in English and Maths and completion of relevant vocational training (e.g., Level 2 Electrical/Technical Certificate).

Preferred Education:

  • NVQ Level 3 in Electrical Installation, City & Guilds or equivalent security systems qualification.
  • Manufacturer-specific training certificates (e.g., Texecom, Honeywell, Hikvision) and accredited fire alarm installation courses.
