An Alarm System Technician (also called Security Technician, Low-Voltage Technician, or Fire/Alarm Technician) is responsible for the professional installation, programming, maintenance, and repair of electronic security systems and life-safety devices. This role combines skilled low-voltage wiring, panel and sensor configuration, network and communicator integration, regulatory compliance (NFPA/UL), and outstanding customer service. Technicians work in client environments—residential, commercial and industrial—often responding to service calls, performing preventive maintenance, and coordinating with monitoring centers, contractors, and municipal inspectors.

Alarm System Technician is a hands-on, field-facing role that requires technical competence with panels (e.g., Honeywell, DSC, DMP, Qolsys), communicators (IP, cellular, POTS), access control readers, CCTV/NVR systems, and an understanding of networking fundamentals for modern IP-enabled security solutions.

Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Install, mount and wire intrusion alarm control panels, sensors, motion detectors, glass-break detectors, and sirens in residential and commercial environments following manufacturer specifications and industry best practices.
  • Program and configure alarm control panels, communicators, and automation modules (IP, cellular, and POTS communicators), including account setup for monitoring centers and verification of signal paths to ensure reliable alarm reporting.
  • Conduct comprehensive site assessments and interpret blueprints, architectural drawings, and schematics to design sensor placement, wiring runs, and equipment locations that optimize coverage and minimize false alarms.
  • Perform detailed troubleshooting and fault isolation of system components—panels, power supplies, batteries, sensors, keypads, communicators, and wiring—using multimeters, cable testers, and diagnostic software to restore full system functionality.
  • Service and maintain fire alarm systems, including smoke and heat detector testing, sensitivity verification, horn/strobe checks, control panel diagnostics, and documentation required for NFPA 72 compliance and local authority inspections.
  • Install, program, and maintain access control hardware—card readers, electro-mechanical locks, controllers—and integrate access schedules, user credentials, and door zone configurations with building systems and management software.
  • Install and configure IP-based CCTV cameras, NVRs, and VMS software; set resolutions, frame rates, motion detection zones, and remote viewing while ensuring appropriate PoE power and network bandwidth management.
  • Execute preventive maintenance plans: perform scheduled inspections, clean and test devices, replace batteries and consumables, update firmware, and prepare detailed maintenance reports and service tickets for customers and internal records.
  • Calibrate and test detectors and sensors to manufacturer tolerances, document test results, adjust sensitivity settings to minimize false positives, and consult with customers on environmental modifications where needed.
  • Respond to emergency service calls and after-hours alarms, perform rapid on-site diagnostics, temporary repairs or workarounds, and coordinate with monitoring centers and dispatch to resolve critical incidents swiftly.
  • Ensure all wiring is routed, labeled, and terminated to code and company standards, including proper use of conduit, raceways, junction boxes, and adherence to local electrical and building codes for low-voltage installations.
  • Configure system integration between intrusion, fire, access control, and building automation platforms using industry-standard protocols (Wiegand, OSDP, ONVIF, TCP/IP) to create seamless, centralized security operations.
  • Perform battery and power supply testing and replacement for alarm panels, UPS systems, and auxiliary power devices to guarantee continuous operation during power outages and comply with backup power requirements.
  • Maintain accurate job documentation including installation notes, As-Built drawings, wiring diagrams, test results, permits, inspection records, and service logs via mobile field software, CRM, or ticketing systems.
  • Provide on-site customer training and handover sessions that cover system operation, arming/disarming, event logs, remote mobile app usage, and preventative tips to reduce false alarms and improve user confidence.
  • Coordinate with general contractors, electricians, IT staff, and municipal inspectors to obtain permits, schedule inspections, and ensure installations align with construction timelines and site safety plans.
  • Prepare clear, itemized service estimates, change orders, and quotes for repairs, upgrades, or system expansions, explaining technical needs and cost impacts to customers in non-technical language.
  • Assist in inventory control and job staging by verifying parts lists, ordering the correct materials, tracking serial numbers, and returning unused or defective components according to company policy.
  • Follow company safety protocols and OSHA guidelines while operating ladders, lifts, hand tools, and power tools; secure job sites and ensure safe handling of batteries and electrical components.
  • Stay current with manufacturer product updates, firmware revisions, and new technology trends; attend vendor training and certification courses and apply learnings to improve installation quality and service efficiency.
  • Participate in on-call rotation schedules, maintain reliable field communication, and provide timely status updates to dispatch and customers during multi-day projects or emergency responses.
  • Advise customers on code compliance, best practices for alarm monitoring, and options for system upgrades (e.g., migration to cloud-based monitoring, cellular backup, smart home integration) to enhance safety and scalability.
  • Install and test environmental sensors (CO, temperature, water/leak sensors) and integrate them into existing alarm systems for complete property protection and life-safety monitoring solutions.
  • Conduct site risk assessments to recommend tailored security system designs that balance cost, performance, false alarm prevention, and future scalability for residential and commercial clients.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

Experience Requirements

Preferred: 3–7 years with demonstrable project experience on commercial systems, plus manufacturer certifications (e.g., Honeywell, DSC, DMP, Qolsys), NICET certification for fire systems, or technician certifications for access control and CCTV. Experience with monitoring center integration, permit processes, and AHJ inspections is highly desirable.

Certifications such as NICET Level I/II/III (fire alarm), BICSI or manufacturer-specific installer certificates, and OSHA or ladder safety training are beneficial and may be required for advancement.
