Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Interpret and apply complex engineering drawings, blueprints, isometric sketches, and welding symbols to set up, qualify and execute welds on high-alloy components, ensuring dimensional accuracy and alignment to tolerances.
- Prepare base metals by cutting, beveling, cleaning, grinding and preheating per welding procedure specifications (WPS) to achieve proper fit-up and avoid contamination on stainless and exotic alloys.
- Perform manual and semi-automatic GTAW (TIG), GMAW (MIG), SMAW (stick) and brazing operations on nickel-based alloys, duplex and austenitic stainless steels, controlling interpass temperatures and heat input to meet metallurgical requirements.
- Follow and document welding procedure specifications (WPS) and procedure qualification records (PQR), including recording amperage, travel speed, filler metal, shielding gas, and pre/post heat treatment parameters.
- Execute welded joints to meet code and customer requirements (ASME Section IX, AWS D1.1, API, ISO), and support qualification of new procedures and materials.
- Select and install filler metals (ERNiCr-3, ERNiFeCr-2, ER316L, ER309, etc.) and shielding gas mixes appropriate for the alloy, process and service-level requirements.
- Conduct in-process inspections, measuring weld size, penetration and alignment; identify weld defects such as porosity, lack of fusion, undercut and correct via approved repair techniques.
- Prepare and document weld maps, traveler paperwork and inspection reports to maintain traceability for materials, heat numbers, and process parameters.
- Execute weld repairs and modifications on complex assemblies, performing blending, grinding and rework to meet surface finish and corrosion resistance specifications.
- Coordinate with welding engineers and metallurgists to resolve metallurgical issues, select appropriate pre/post-heat treatments, and specify PWHT (post-weld heat treatment) when required.
- Operate welding positioners, fixtures, and manipulators to secure complex geometries for consistent weld quality in production or repair environments.
- Maintain and calibrate welding equipment, torches, power sources and gas delivery systems; troubleshoot process issues and escalate to maintenance as needed.
- Perform NDT preparation and support (visual, PT, MT, UT, RT) including marking, cleaning and access provisioning for testing, and respond to NDT findings with approved corrective actions.
- Adhere to material handling procedures for exotic alloys including contamination control, segregation, and proper storage to prevent cross-contamination and preserve material properties.
- Implement and document weld sequencing and interpass temperature controls to minimize distortion and meet metallurgical specifications for high-temperature or cryogenic service components.
- Maintain strong housekeeping and safety compliance, including PPE use, fume extraction, welding curtains, and compliance with LOTO and confined-space protocols.
- Train and mentor junior welders and apprentices on alloy-specific practices, safe work methods and quality expectations; participate in qualification runs and skills assessments.
- Participate in root cause analysis for weld failures or nonconformances; implement corrective actions and continuous improvement suggestions to reduce rework and scrap.
- Support production planning by providing accurate time, tooling and resource estimates for complex alloy welding jobs and custom fabrications.
- Communicate with quality, engineering and production teams to clarify specifications, highlight potential manufacturability issues and propose design-for-weldability improvements.
Secondary Functions
- Assist with development and revision of welding procedure specifications (WPS) and technique sheets to standardize alloy welding best practices across the shop.
- Support material traceability and documentation for customer audits and regulatory inspections, maintaining records per company retention policies.
- Contribute to process improvement initiatives by capturing metrics (yield, rework, scrap) and recommending tooling, fixturing, or parameter changes to improve throughput and quality.
- Participate in safety committees and continuous training programs, suggesting improvements to ventilation, PPE, and fume-control practices.
- Provide hands-on support during shutdowns, retrofits and on-site assembly requiring specialized alloy welding expertise.
- Help qualify subcontractors and outside vendors for alloy welding work by reviewing certifications, process capability and sample welds.

- Create clear handover documentation for multi-shift teams to ensure consistency of procedures, parameters and work in progress.
