  • Roofing or Waterproofing Technician

Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Assist lead installers in unloading, staging and protecting aluminum composite panels (ACM), coil-coated panels, extrusions and flashings; inspect deliveries for damage and report discrepancies to the foreman to prevent installation delays.
  • Measure, mark and lay out panel lines, rivet patterns and fastener locations using tape measures, straight edges, laser measures and layout tools, ensuring dimensional accuracy per shop drawings and site conditions.
  • Cut and trim aluminum panels, angles and extrusions to size using power shears, nibblers, chop saws and hand tools while maintaining manufacturer tolerances and edge quality.
  • Pre-fit and mock up panels and trim on the ground or scaffold to verify fit and alignment before final attachment, reducing field rework and ensuring aesthetic continuity.
  • Assist with mechanical fastening, pop riveting, Tek screw installation and concealed clip attachment systems; operate pneumatic and electric fastening equipment following torque and spacing requirements.
  • Apply gaskets, EPDM seals, tapes and recommended sealants at panel joints, flashings and penetrations to maintain weather-tightness and thermal performance per manufacturer specifications.
  • Install flashings, corner caps, soffit returns and transition pieces precisely, ensuring continuous water shedding, proper overlaps and consistent reveal lines.
  • Support installation of subframing, furring channels and clip systems by holding components plumb, level and square for anchor and fastener installation by the installer or crew lead.
  • Assist with layout and installation of expansion joints, control joints and thermal break components to preserve system movement capability and avoid buckling or oil-canning.
  • Perform basic on-site metal forming and notching for returns, setbacks and interfacing with adjacent trades using brakes, hand files and portable bending tools under supervision.
  • Help set up, adjust and secure temporary scaffolding, mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs) and ladders in compliance with fall protection plans and OSHA requirements (work done by competent person or as permitted).
  • Cut and shape insulation backers and backer rod, and ensure proper backing for sealant joints to achieve the designed joint width to depth ratio.
  • Clean installed panels, remove protective film without damaging finishes, and perform final wipe-downs to present installation-ready surfaces for quality inspection.
  • Assist with on-site quality control checks β€” squareness, reveal consistency, fastener pattern and sealant bead continuity β€” and document non-conformances for corrective action.
  • Maintain jobsite housekeeping: remove scrap, pack out waste responsibly, segregate recyclable metals and ensure clear access for trades and emergency egress.
  • Coordinate with carpenters, waterproofers, glaziers and roofing crews to sequence work and ensure proper interfacing of cladding with windows, doors and roof terminations.
  • Follow project-specific safety plans, use personal protective equipment (PPE) correctly and report hazards or near-misses immediately to supervisors to maintain a zero-incident jobsite culture.
  • Maintain, clean and perform basic maintenance on hand and power tools, compressors and scaffolding components; report damaged equipment to reduce downtime and maintain safe operation.
  • Assist in measuring, cutting and installing trim and closure pieces around penetrations, soffits, fascias and building corners ensuring aesthetic and functional detail completion.
  • Record daily labor hours, materials used and site observations in the foreman’s field log or digital app to support accurate billing and material reconciliation.
  • Load, unload and move panels and crates on site using proper manual handling techniques and mechanical aids (carts, dollies, forklifts with certified operator) to minimize damage and injury.
  • Support emergency repairs and touch-up work on installed panels, applying manufacturer-approved touch-up paints, sealants or replacement of damaged components as directed.
  • Participate in toolbox talks, on-the-job training, and manufacturer-led system training sessions to maintain updated knowledge of cladding systems and safe work procedures.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist with inventory management: tag materials, rotate stock, and notify supervisors when restocking is required to avoid installation delays.
  • Prepare cutting lists and help stage materials by panel sequence to improve installation efficiency and minimize handling.
  • Photograph installed work and deficiencies for as-built documentation and handover packages to project managers and quality teams.
  • Help verify and maintain labeling of panels, clips and accessories to match shop drawings and delivery manifests for traceability.
  • Participate in customer-facing activities as needed (walkdowns, punchlists) to support client satisfaction and final acceptance.
  • Support environmental and waste reduction initiatives by segregating recyclable aluminum and reducing on-site scrap.
  • Assist in basic template creation and transfer patterns from mockups to final installation areas to ensure consistent repetitive details.
  • Provide on-the-job training and buddy-up support for new helpers and apprentices to accelerate crew productivity.
