Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Set up, calibrate and operate manual and semi-automatic saws (circular, miter, cold saw, CNC saw) for cutting aluminum stock by reading production orders, blueprints, cut lists and engineering drawings to achieve specified lengths, angles and tolerances.
  • Measure and mark stock using tape measures, protractors and layout tools; position and secure aluminum profiles, extrusions and sheet on fixtures and jigs to ensure accurate, repeatable cuts and minimal material movement during cutting operations.
  • Select and install appropriate blade types, tooth geometries and speeds for aluminum cutting to reduce burrs, prevent melting or gumming, and extend tooling life while maintaining cut quality.
  • Program and verify CNC saw operations (where applicable), inputting cut lists, offsets, and feed rates; run test cuts and adjust parameters until first-piece dimensions meet tolerances.
  • Use precision measuring instruments—calipers, micrometers, height gauges—and perform first-article inspections to confirm dimensional accuracy, surface finish and squareness prior to full production runs.
  • Monitor cutting operations continuously to detect defects such as chatter, blade wandering, burr formation or heat discoloration; immediately stop the machine and correct issues to avoid producing nonconforming parts.
  • Maintain strict adherence to quality specifications and inspection procedures; document measurements, reject reasons, rework steps and production yields in daily logs and software systems.
  • Apply safe material handling practices: stage feed stock, remove cut parts, separate scrap, and coordinate with forklift operators to move heavy or long aluminum sections to and from saws and staging areas.
  • Perform routine preventative maintenance: clean saw housings, remove swarf and chips, inspect blade condition, check blade guards, lubricate guide rails, and replace worn or damaged components to prevent unplanned downtime.
  • Follow lockout/tagout (LOTO) and machine guarding protocols for setup, maintenance and blade changes; wear appropriate PPE including gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection and cut-resistant apparel.
  • Interpret job travelers, bill of materials (BOM) and routing sheets to sequence cuts for optimal material yield and reduced scrap; optimize cut patterns and nesting when working with bundles or sheet stock.
  • Execute efficient cycle times to meet daily production targets while balancing speed with dimensional accuracy; escalate schedule or equipment constraints to the supervisor proactively.
  • Trim and deburr cut parts as required using hand files, deburring tools or secondary edge trimming equipment and verify edge quality meets acceptance criteria.
  • Apply basic troubleshooting to electrical and mechanical issues—identify loose belts, worn bearings or misaligned fences—and coordinate with maintenance to prioritize repairs and minimize production impact.
  • Maintain accurate production counts, run-time logs, defect logs and material usage records in paper or digital systems for traceability and inventory reconciliation.
  • Pack and label finished cut parts per work order instructions, include part numbers and quantities, and stage for assembly or shipment following ESD/handling procedures when required.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives by reporting recurring defects, suggesting process or tooling changes, participating in root cause investigations, and helping implement corrective actions that reduce scrap and improve throughput.
  • Train and mentor junior operators and cross-train on complementary saws and fixtures to build team redundancy and maintain production coverage.
  • Comply with environmental regulations and facility housekeeping standards by managing scrap aluminum recycling, waste containment, coolant management and spill prevention activities.
  • Coordinate with Quality Assurance to manage nonconforming material: segregate rejects, prepare documentation for rework or scrap disposition, and support internal audits and customer inspections.
  • Verify and maintain tooling inventory: track blade stock, arbor sizes, clamps, jigs and special fixtures; request replenishment and participate in supplier/tooling evaluations.
  • Participate in shift handovers by communicating open work orders, machine status, in-process issues and critical measurements to ensure seamless production continuity.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist with light maintenance and cleanliness of the saw area, including chip conveyor cleanup, coolant checks and general housekeeping.
  • Help staging and kitting of material for upcoming production runs to reduce setup time and support lean manufacturing objectives.
  • Support receiving and basic inspection of incoming aluminum material for obvious damage or dimensional mismatches before it enters the production flow.
  • Complete standard production paperwork, update ERP or MES entries, and help maintain accurate inventory/cardex records for cut material.
  • Participate in safety meetings, toolbox talks and on-the-job training sessions; contribute observations that improve workplace safety.
  • Perform occasional duty as backup machine operator across related cutting or fabrication cells to cover absences or peaks in demand.
  • Assist the maintenance team with simple diagnostic checks and replacement of consumable items to expedite repairs under supervision.
  • Document and escalate any tooling or machine performance trends that could affect large-volume orders or customer delivery schedules.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proficient operation of aluminum cutting equipment: circular saws, cold saws, miter saws, band saws and CNC saws.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, cut lists, BOMs, and machining drawings for length, angle and finish requirements.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:
