Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Assist lead installers by unloading, staging and protecting aluminum doors, frames, glass and hardware on commercial and residential job sites, ensuring materials are organized by elevation and sequence to minimize handling damage.
- Carry out site protection, layout and preparation tasks including sweeping work areas, placing drop cloths, and protecting finished surfaces to maintain a safe, clean jobsite.
- Help measure and verify opening dimensions, tolerances and plumb/square conditions under the direction of the lead installer to ensure door and frame fit prior to installation.
- Assist in setting and temporarily shimming door frames, squaring frames to openings, and holding pieces during anchoring or fastener installation.
- Support the installation of doors, hinges, closers, strikes and other hardware by positioning components, handing tools and adjusting hardware per installer instructions.
- Aid in the installation and bedding of glazing units, setting gaskets, applying setting blocks and performing glass handling with suction cups under supervision.
- Mix, apply and tool sealants and gaskets (silicones, polyurethane, butyl) as directed to create weather-tight seals around frames and panels.
- Operate basic power tools and hand tools safely (drills, impact drivers, grinders, torque wrenches, levels) to assist with assembly, fastening and cutting tasks.
- Carry, position and install thresholds, sidelites, transoms and panel inserts, assisting with alignment and final fastening.
- Assist with temporary bracing, anchoring and structural supports during multi-person installs, ensuring load is properly distributed and items are secure.
- Read and follow installation drawings, punch lists and work orders, and confirm material counts and part numbers before or during installation.
- Clean, de-burr and perform minor on-site metal touch-ups, sanding, and cosmetic finishing to maintain product appearance and prevent corrosion.
- Help troubleshoot basic fit and clearance issues, escalating complex alignment or frame distortion problems to the lead installer or supervisor.
- Load and unload company trucks and trailers, secure materials for transport and return unused materials to the yard following job completion protocols.
- Perform pre-installation checks on hardware and accessories, verify keyed cores, and stage required fasteners and anchors for efficient installation flow.
- Participate in on-site quality checks and final punch-list activities, removing packaging, cleaning glass and performing final wipe-downs for customer handover.
- Maintain, clean and occasionally sharpen shop/field tools and small equipment; report defective tools or safety hazards to management immediately.
- Follow and support company safety programs: fall protection, PPE use, ladder/stair safety, proper manual lifting techniques, and OSHA compliance.
- Record basic installation notes, time/attendance, and material usage for daily crew reports and communicate issues to supervisors.
- Assist with returning and restocking leftover materials, labeling returns correctly, and coordinating with the warehouse on replenishment needs.
- Participate in basic shop fabrication or pre-assembly tasks when required: drilling hinge pockets, pre-punching anchors, and partial sub-assembly under supervision.
- Support other trades on site when needed, coordinating with GCs and subcontractors to maintain project schedule and minimize rework.
Secondary Functions
- Assist in inventory control: receiving deliveries, verifying counts against packing lists and notifying supervisors of shortages or damage.
- Help the team prepare and stage materials for the next day’s installs, reducing downtime and improving crew productivity.
- Provide courteous customer-facing support during installs by answering simple questions and maintaining a professional presence on site.
- Support training of new helpers by demonstrating safe tool use, material handling and basic installation techniques.
- Collect and dispose of jobsite waste and recyclable materials, keeping COIs and permit paperwork organized for the installer’s review.
- Coordinate with the shop to pick up specialty parts, custom extrusions or replacement glass as requested to avoid project delays.
- Assist in operating small lifting equipment (material lifts) or rolling scaffolding after proper training and certification.
- Participate in company continuous improvement suggestions by reporting recurring issues with parts, fitment or installation methods.
Required Skills & Competencies
Hard Skills (Technical)
- Proficient with hand tools and common power tools used in door/glazing installation (drills, impact drivers, levels, grinders, saws).
- Knowledge of basic aluminum door and storefront components: frames, thresholds, weatherstripping, and glazing systems.
- Ability to assist with measuring, squaring, shimming and temporarily anchoring door frames to ensure correct alignment.
