Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Prepare aluminum surfaces through degreasing, solvent wiping, sanding, grit blasting, and chemical etching to ensure proper adhesion and consistent finish on aluminum parts and assemblies.
  • Interpret blueprints, work orders, and coating specifications (OEM, MIL-SPEC, customer-specific) to select appropriate primers, topcoats, adhesion promoters, and corrosion inhibitors.
  • Mask and protect non-painted areas using tapes, plugs, and covers; set up fixtures and jigs to secure components for accurate and repeatable application.
  • Mix and formulate paints, primers, thinners, hardeners, and powder blends to manufacturer specifications and perform color matching and viscosity checks for consistent application.
  • Operate and maintain spray equipment including HVLP, airless, conventional guns, and electrostatic systems to achieve specified film builds and surface finish.
  • Apply powder coatings using manual or automated spray guns and manage oven curing cycles, temperature profiles, and hang-rack configurations to ensure proper cure and coating performance.
  • Monitor and measure wet and dry film thickness (FTM/Paint Meter) and document results to meet quality requirements and customer specifications.
  • Conduct adhesion tests, cross-hatch tests, porosity checks, salt spray/boil tests (when required), and other inspections to verify coating integrity and corrosion resistance.
  • Perform final finishing tasks such as buffing, polishing, wet sanding, and touch-up to achieve cosmetic and dimensional requirements.
  • Troubleshoot common coating defects (runs, sags, orange peel, fisheyes, solvent popping) and implement corrective actions to reduce rework and scrap.
  • Maintain and clean paint booths, filtration systems, curing ovens, and spray equipment; change filters and perform routine preventative maintenance to ensure safe and compliant operations.
  • Comply with VOC regulations, hazardous materials handling rules, and company environmental health and safety (EHS) procedures; maintain SDS/MSDS and hazardous waste logs.
  • Log coating lot numbers, batch records, bake times, and process parameters in production records or ERP systems for traceability and quality audits.
  • Coordinate with production planners, fabrication teams, and quality inspectors to meet delivery schedules and resolve issues affecting throughput or finish quality.
  • Provide on-the-floor training and mentorship to junior painters and apprentices in surface prep techniques, spray technique, and safety practices.
  • Follow lockout/tagout, respiratory protection programs, and PPE requirements when working in paint booths, blasting rooms, or with hazardous chemicals.
  • Assist with paint process development and continuous improvement projects to reduce cycle time, material usage, and environmental impact while improving finish quality.
  • Manage paint and consumable inventory, perform cycle counts, and request replenishment to prevent production delays.
  • Participate in pre-shift and post-shift quality checks, record non-conformances, and support root cause investigations for painting defects.
  • Implement and verify masking and fixturing strategies for complex geometries and assemblies to minimize overspray and ensure consistent coverage on aluminum substrates.
  • Prepare and maintain calibration records for measurement tools (thickness gauge, viscosity cup, oven thermocouples) used to control the coating process.
  • Work with suppliers and technical representatives to evaluate new coatings, primers, or application equipment and recommend process improvements.
  • Ensure consistent color and gloss control across production runs by following color standards, performing spray booths setup checks, and adjusting technique as needed.
  • Maintain a clean, organized workspace and follow 5S and Lean principles to improve paint shop efficiency and safety.

  • Assist Quality Assurance with sample preparation for customer approvals and external lab testing when required.
  • Participate in shop safety audits and environmental compliance inspections; implement corrective actions from audit findings.
  • Document lessons learned and update standard operating procedures (SOPs) related to coating application and surface treatment.
