Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Interpret and work from blueprints, engineering drawings, CAD files and work orders to lay out, mark, measure and cut aluminium sheet and plate to specified tolerances for panel production and repairs.
  • Trim, bend and form aluminium panels using press brakes, rollers, metal brakes and hand-forming techniques to achieve exact contours and fit against frames, skins and structural members.
  • Set up and operate shears, nibblers, routers, CNC plasma/laser cutters and band saws to cut and prepare parts while maintaining accurate edge conditions and minimal material waste.
  • Install mechanical fastenings including solid rivets, blind (pop) rivets, Hi-Loks, bolts, nuts, lockwire and clinch nuts; perform countersinking, dimpling and countersunk fastener preparation to proper depth and finish.
  • Perform aluminium welding and joining operations as required (MIG/TIG or specialist aluminium welding), including brazing and heat straightening consistent with process specifications and weld procedures.
  • Bond and adhesive-join aluminium and composite panels using specified adhesives and bonding processes, including surface preparation, priming, fixturing and cure monitoring.
  • Fit panels to sub-frames, assemblies and finished structures; verify clearances, edge alignment, gaps, and panel geometry using feeler gauges, straight edges, levels and templates.
  • De-burr, grind, sand and finish panel edges and surfaces to remove sharpness, prepare for coating or sealing, and ensure cosmetic quality meets standards.
  • Install trim, seals, gaskets, fasteners, reinforcements, stiffeners and acoustic/layering materials in accordance with assembly sequences and specifications.
  • Conduct in-process and final dimensional inspections, record measurements, complete inspection reports and flag non-conforming parts to Quality for disposition.
  • Modify and fabricate required brackets, stiffeners, doublers and repair patches using plate work, hand tools and small machinery to support maintenance and structural repairs.
  • Set up and operate jigs, fixtures and templates; adjust and maintain tooling to ensure repeatable accurate fits and throughput for production runs and prototypes.
  • Assist in prototype assembly and first-article builds by providing fit feedback, recommending tooling changes and documenting assembly sequences and critical dimensions.
  • Follow torque, thread-locking, sealant application and surface preparation procedures to ensure structural integrity and corrosion protection of assembled panels.
  • Use measuring devices including micrometers, calipers, height gauges, protractors and laser measuring tools to achieve and verify tight tolerances and geometric requirements.
  • Perform material handling, prepare cut-lists, stage parts for assembly and maintain inventory of fasteners, adhesives and consumables used in panel fitting processes.
  • Read and apply engineering change notices (ECNs), revisions and work instructions; update assembly documentation when required and communicate changes to production staff.
  • Carry out routine preventative maintenance and basic repair of hand and powered tools, presses, jigs and bench fixtures to maintain safe and efficient operations.
  • Comply with safety, environmental and quality management systems (e.g., OSHA, WHMIS, company-specific policies), use PPE and participate in safety audits and toolbox talks.
  • Troubleshoot fit and finish issues, propose practical corrective actions, and work with engineering to implement design or process improvements for manufacturability.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives such as 5S, Kaizen events and lean manufacturing activities to reduce cycle time, material usage and rework.
  • Train and mentor junior fitter staff and apprentices on safe work practices, measuring techniques, assembly sequences and finishing standards.
  • Perform on-site installations, alignments and adjustments for final field-fit work when required; coordinate with installers and contractors to ensure correct integration.
  • Maintain clear, structured, and auditable production records, including serial numbers, batch traces, inspection checklists and sign-offs for regulatory and warranty compliance.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist production planning with lead-time estimates, build sequencing and workload balancing for panel assemblies and repair work.
  • Support engineering and quality teams during root cause analyses, failure investigations and corrective action implementations.
  • Help source consumables and recommend suppliers for aluminium alloys, adhesives, fasteners and finishing materials to improve cost and quality.
  • Provide input into tooling design and small jig fabrication to improve panel alignment and reduce set-up time for recurring assemblies.
  • Participate in cross-functional meetings to align production capabilities with new product introductions and design changes.
  • Document best practices and contribute to shop floor standard operating procedures (SOPs) and training materials.
  • Conduct periodic inventory checks and report shortages or overages of frequently used panels, brackets and fasteners.
  • Assist in customer-facing activities such as site measurements, fit checks and technical clarifications during installation or retrofit projects.
  • Support ad-hoc troubleshooting requests from maintenance and assembly teams to minimize downtime and maintain production targets.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement programs by reporting process inefficiencies and suggesting practical improvements.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proficient blueprint and technical drawing interpretation, including GD&T fundamentals and tolerance callouts.
  • Skilled in layout, measuring, cutting and forming aluminium sheet and plate using press brakes, rollers and metal brakes.
  • Experience operating CNC routers, plasma/laser cutters, shear machines and band saws for panel fabrication.
  • Competent with rivet installation methods (solid rivets, blind rivets, Hi-Loks), countersinking, dimpling and fastener torque procedures.
  • Practical knowledge of MIG/TIG welding for aluminium, brazing and heat-straightening techniques (certified welding preferred).

  • Hands-on experience with deburring, grinding, finishing, sanding and corrosion-prep techniques prior to painting/coating.
  • Familiarity with tooling and jig set-up, fixture maintenance and small-tool fabrication for repeatable assembly.
  • Basic CNC programming/operator skills or the ability to read CNC output files and verify cut paths for panel parts.
  • Knowledge of fastening hardware standards, threadlocker usage, sealant application and torque specifications.
  • Experience with quality inspection protocols, first-article inspection, non-conformance reporting and corrective action processes.
  • Competence in material handling equipment such as forklifts, hoists, and lifting aids with relevant operator certifications.
  • Working knowledge of safety and regulatory requirements (OSHA, WHMIS, PPE) and shop-floor environmental controls.
  • Computer literacy for digital work orders, basic ERP/MRP systems, and electronic documentation of inspections.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent (required). Trade school certificate or vocational training in sheet metal, welding or metal fabrication preferred.

Preferred Education:

  • Trade/technical diploma in Sheet Metal, Metal Fabrication, Welding Technology, or Aircraft Structures.
  • Completion of an apprenticeship program or post-secondary program in a related discipline.

Experience Requirements

Prior experience with first-article builds, prototype assembly or regulated environments (aerospace/defense) is a strong advantage.
