The Aluminum Production Supervisor is accountable for supervising day-to-day production activities in an aluminum plant or metal rolling/extrusion facility. Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  1. Supervise and coordinate all daily activities of the aluminum production shift (casting, extrusion, annealing, rolling or finishing), ensuring targets for throughput, on‑time delivery and product specifications are met.
  2. Lead, coach and develop hourly production operators and technicians; conduct shift briefings, performance feedback, disciplinary actions and formal performance reviews.
  3. Ensure strict compliance with EHS policies and procedures: enforce PPE, lockout/tagout, confined space entry, hot work, and hazardous materials handling for the shift.
  4. Monitor and manage production KPIs (throughput, yield, scrap rate, OEE, downtime, first pass yield) and drive corrective actions to meet or exceed targets.
  5. Partner closely with maintenance to schedule and prioritize preventive maintenance, reduce unplanned downtime and expedite repairs on furnaces, extruders, rolling mills and conveyors.
  6. Oversee raw material handling and inventory for alloys, billets, ingots and consumables; coordinate with procurement and warehouse to avoid production shortages.
  7. Validate product quality against customer specifications and internal standards; authorize disposition of nonconforming material and lead containment / corrective actions.
  8. Work with metallurgical and process engineering to implement process parameters for casting, melting, heat treatment and rolling to improve product consistency and reduce defects.
  9. Conduct root cause analyses (5 Whys, Fishbone, RCA) on production incidents and implement long‑term corrective and preventive countermeasures.
  10. Manage shift changeovers, line setups and tooling changes efficiently, ensuring first‑time right production and minimal changeover losses.
  11. Maintain accurate production logs, batch records, quality reports and regulatory documentation for traceability and audit readiness.
  12. Enforce and audit adherence to standardized work, SOPs, work instructions and visual management at the line level.
  13. Support continuous improvement and lean manufacturing initiatives (Kaizen, 5S, SMED) to reduce cycle times, eliminate waste and lower cost per ton.
  14. Coordinate with shipping and logistics to meet customer shipment windows, packaging requirements and final inspection sign‑offs.
  15. Control labor, overtime and operational costs by optimizing crew sizes, shift patterns and resource allocation while maintaining safety and quality.
  16. Ensure environmental compliance with local and federal regulations (air emissions, wastewater, chemical storage) and support reporting and permit requirements.
  17. Lead incident investigations for safety, quality or environmental events and ensure timely corrective actions and lessons learned are communicated plant‑wide.
  18. Train new hires on safe operation of furnaces, presses, extrusion dies, homogenizers and other process equipment; maintain training records and certifications.
  19. Participate in capital project implementation and line start‑ups, coordinating commissioning activities, operator training and initial process stabilization.
  20. Foster strong collaboration with Quality, Engineering, Maintenance, Supply Chain and Sales to align production with customer demand, new product introductions and continuous improvement goals.
  21. Review and recommend investments in tooling, spare parts, instrumentation and automation to improve uptime, measurement accuracy and process capability.
  22. Manage contractor work on site (vendors, maintenance contractors) including safety orientation, scopes of work and permit compliance.
  23. Ensure accurate shift‑to‑shift communication using Handover notebooks, electronic logs or MES entries to maintain continuity and reduce errors.
  24. Drive a culture of accountability, ownership and continuous learning where operators are empowered to suggest improvements and stop the line for safety or quality concerns.

Secondary Functions

  • Support plant‑level continuous improvement projects and cross‑functional workshops to implement best practices and scale successful experiments.
  • Participate in internal and external audits (ISO 9001, IATF, customer audits, environmental audits) and implement corrective actions arising from findings.
  • Maintain and update standard operating procedures (SOPs), risk assessments and safety permits for the supervised area.
  • Assist in forecasting labor needs, workforce planning and succession planning for critical roles.
  • Provide input to capital budget requests, business cases and ROI analysis for equipment upgrades or process automation.
  • Support product and process qualification activities for new alloys, gauges and customer specifications.
  • Facilitate operator cross‑training programs and skill matrix development to increase workforce flexibility.
  • Coordinate with HR on hiring, onboarding and performance improvement plans for production personnel.
  • Prepare regular shift and weekly escalation reports summarizing performance, safety events and open action items for plant leadership.
  • Participate in emergency response drills and support plant emergency preparedness planning.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Deep knowledge of aluminum production processes: melting, casting, extrusion, rolling, annealing and downstream finishing.
  • Proven experience with melt shop and furnace operations, potline operations or rolling mill best practices.
  • Production scheduling and planning experience with MRP/ERP systems (SAP, Oracle, etc.).
  • Strong competency in process control and basic metallurgy (alloy chemistry, heat treat, grain structure effects).
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, product specifications and control charts.
  • Familiarity with PLC/HMI systems, basic troubleshooting of automated equipment and instrumentation.
  • Experience with lean manufacturing, Six Sigma tools, OEE calculation and continuous improvement methodologies.
  • Root cause analysis skills (5 Whys, Fishbone, FMEA) and corrective action management.
  • Knowledge of regulatory requirements: OSHA, EPA, RCRA, air permits and hazardous materials handling.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel for KPI tracking and pivot tables) and use of MES or production reporting tools.
  • Experience with QA systems and standards (ISO 9001, customer-specific quality frameworks) and nonconformance / CAPA workflows.
  • Basic welding, mechanical or electrical systems understanding to communicate effectively with maintenance teams.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High School Diploma or GED; technical certificates or trade school background in manufacturing, metallurgy, or industrial trades preferred.

  • Associate degree or Bachelor’s degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Technology, Manufacturing Engineering, Materials Science, or Operations Management.
