The Aluminum Saw Operator is a skilled production technician responsible for accurately and safely cutting aluminum extrusions, bars, tubes and fabricated parts to specified lengths and angles using manual and powered saw equipment (miter saws, cold saws, band saws, circular saws, and CNC saws). This role requires reading blueprints and work orders, performing precise measurements, setting up and maintaining saws, ensuring cut quality within tolerance, following OSHA and company safety standards, and collaborating across fabrication, finishing, and shipping teams to meet production schedules and minimize scrap.

Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Accurately set up, calibrate and operate manual and powered saws (miter saws, cold saws, band saws, circular saws, and aluminum-specific cutting saws) to cut aluminum extrusions, billets, and fabricated parts to exact lengths, miters and angles per work orders and engineering drawings while consistently meeting dimensional tolerances and finish quality standards.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, cut lists, production work orders and CAD prints to determine required cut lengths, compound angles, bevels, tolerances and finishing requirements; confirm part identification and orientation before cutting.
  • Measure and mark material using tape measures, calipers, micrometers, combination squares and protractors; perform first-piece checks and in-process inspections to ensure parts meet specified tolerances, documenting measurements and deviations.
  • Select, install and adjust appropriate saw blades, teeth per inch (TPI), cutting speeds and feed rates for various aluminum alloys and cross-sections to optimize cut quality, reduce burrs and minimize heat buildup and material waste.
  • Program, set up and operate CNC saw controls or automated cutting fixtures (where applicable), load part programs or job parameters, verify offsets and perform dry-runs to confirm correct machine motion and part geometry prior to production.
  • Execute machine set-up tasks including aligning fences, stops, coolant/no-coolant selection, clamping/fixturing and cutting sequences; ensure repeatable, consistent cuts in high-volume production runs.
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance and daily pre-start checks on saws and related tooling: check blade condition, guard functionality, coolant levels, lubrication points, belts, electrical connections and safety interlocks; document maintenance activities.
  • Inspect cut edges, miters and bores for burrs, chamfers, roughness or deformation; perform deburring, sanding or secondary finishing as required and escalate parts that fail QC criteria to supervision for disposition.
  • Maintain tight scrap and yield control by optimizing cutting patterns, using length optimization techniques and reporting unusable material; verify material types and heat codes against job specifications.
  • Operate material handling equipment safely, including overhead hoists, jibs and forklifts, to load and position heavy aluminum stock and bundles while adhering to material storage and handling protocols.
  • Follow all company and OSHA safety rules and procedures, maintain machine guards and PPE (safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves where allowed), and participate in lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures during maintenance or blade changes.
  • Accurately record production quantities, scrap amounts, machine run times, tool changes and downtime in production logs, MES, ERP or shop travelers; communicate issues affecting throughput to supervision in real time.
  • Troubleshoot common saw issues (vibration, blade wander, burn marks, chatter) and take corrective actions such as blade replacement, feed rate adjustment, or alignment corrections to restore quality and throughput.
  • Coordinate with upstream fabrication, CNC machining and downstream finishing or assembly teams to plan cutting sequences and ensure parts are delivered in the correct order and condition for next operations.
  • Maintain clean, organized workstations and saw areas, remove metal chips and coolant residue, manage fluid containment and recycling processes, and participate in 5S/lean manufacturing initiatives to improve flow and safety.
  • Train, mentor and assist new operators on safe saw operation, setup best practices, inspection criteria and company production standards to raise overall team competency.
  • Adhere to quality systems such as ISO or internal QMS procedures, complete required inspection forms, nonconformance reports and corrective action documentation when defects are identified.
  • Participate in continuous improvement activities: recommend tooling, fixturing, process changes or blade types that reduce cycle time, improve edge quality or reduce scrap; pilot process improvements and document results.
  • Work assigned shifts and flexible overtime as required to meet production schedules, support weekend projects or rush customer orders while maintaining quality and safety standards.
  • Safely manage and store cutting tools, spare blades and consumables; ensure blade tracking, tool life monitoring and reorder points are maintained to avoid production delays.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors, quality, shipping and purchasing regarding material shortages, urgent customer jobs, tooling needs or equipment failures to minimize production disruptions.
  • Comply with environmental and hazardous material protocols for disposal of used blades, coolant and metal waste; maintain records for regulatory or company compliance.

Secondary Functions

  • Assist in basic machine maintenance and cleaning beyond daily checks, supporting maintenance technicians during larger repairs or scheduled preventive maintenance tasks.
  • Support inventory control by verifying incoming material dimensions and reporting discrepancies to receiving and purchasing teams.
  • Help prepare parts for special packaging, kitting or shipping when production priorities require cross-functional support.
  • Participate in toolbox talks, safety training and periodic competency assessments to keep certifications and qualifications current.
  • Provide data for continuous improvement metrics: assist supervisors in compiling OEE, scrap rate and cycle time data when requested.
  • Backfill on adjacent metalworking or finishing machines (deburring stations, presses) during absences or peak workloads, provided cross-training is completed.
  • Assist Quality with first article inspections or sample part measurements during new job setups to ensure dimensional conformance.
  • Maintain basic digital logs, scan barcodes or update electronic travelers in the shop floor system to reflect part status and location.
  • Participate in job changeovers and quick changeover (SMED) activities to reduce downtime between production runs.
  • Support ad-hoc requests from engineering for trial cuts, prototype trimming or evaluation pieces for process qualification.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Proficient operation of aluminum cutting equipment: cold saws, miter saws, band saws, circular saws and automated/CNC saw systems.
  • Strong blueprint reading skills: ability to interpret dimensions, tolerances, notes, cut lists and geometric requirements.

  • Knowledge of OSHA, LOTO, PPE requirements and safe machine guarding practices for metal sawing operations.
  • Basic math and layout skills: ability to calculate cut lists, compound miter angles, material yield and simple geometry for nest optimization.
  • Familiarity with deburring, finishing and secondary operations common in aluminum fabrication.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High school diploma or GED.

Preferred Education:

  • Technical certificate or vocational training in metal fabrication, machining, or industrial maintenance.
  • Coursework or certification in OSHA safety, forklift operation or CNC fundamentals is a plus.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:

  • Experience with CNC saws, automated cutting cells or experience working within ISO-certified or lean manufacturing environments.
