Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Supervise, schedule and mentor a multi-disciplinary shop team (fitters, welders, fabricators, CNC operators, finishers and assemblers), creating daily production plans and assigning work to meet customer delivery dates while maintaining quality and safety standards.
- Read, interpret and enforce engineering drawings, blueprints, CAD prints, and product specifications (including GD&T), translating them into clear work orders, routing sheets and step-by-step fabrication procedures for the crew.
- Plan and sequence shop workflows to optimize throughput for aluminum extrusion, plate and sheet cutting, forming, welding, riveting, assembly and finishing operations while minimizing lead times and bottlenecks.
- Implement and enforce shop safety policies and OSHA requirements, conduct regular safety briefings/toolbox talks, incident investigations and ensure all employees are trained on PPE, lift/hoist, hot‑work permits and confined-space procedures where applicable.
- Maintain rigorous quality control by conducting in-process inspections, first-article inspections, dimensional checks with calipers/micrometers, torque checks and final acceptance inspections to ensure parts meet customer tolerances and specifications.
- Set daily, weekly and monthly production targets and KPIs (on-time delivery, scrap/rework rates, throughput, downtime), track performance in the shop and report metrics to operations leadership, recommending corrective actions where needed.
- Develop and maintain weld procedures (WPS/PQR), ensure welders are qualified to required codes and maintain weld logs; coordinate third-party inspections or NDT (dye-penetrant, ultrasonic) as required by contracts.
- Oversee CNC machining, saw and shear operations for aluminum components—coordinate programs, tooling, fixturing and setup with operators and the programming group to ensure accurate parts and efficient cycle times.
- Control inventory of raw aluminum stock, fasteners, consumables and critical tooling; place and expedite material orders, manage scrap and material yields and work with purchasing/vendor partners to secure reliable supply.
- Coordinate preventive maintenance and troubleshooting for shop equipment including CNC machines, band saws, presses, brake presses, presses, welders, hoists and cranes; schedule downtime for repairs to minimize impact on production.
- Coach and develop shop staff through on-the-job training, cross-training programs, performance reviews and competency assessments to build a versatile team capable of meeting variable workloads.
- Create, update and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs), work instructions, jigs/fixtures documentation and checklists to capture best practices and reduce variability in aluminum fabrication processes.
- Conduct capacity planning and resource allocation to support multiple jobs simultaneously, aligning labor, equipment and tooling with project priorities and customer due dates.
- Collaborate with engineering and estimating teams to provide manufacturability feedback, flag potential design-for-manufacture issues, propose cost-saving value-engineering solutions and validate lead-time estimates.
- Manage job routing, tracking and documentation in ERP/MRP systems (production orders, job traveler, labor hours, scrap codes) and ensure data accuracy for billing and cost reporting.
- Lead continuous improvement initiatives (5S, Kaizen events, root-cause analysis) to reduce waste, lower rework and improve overall shop efficiency and throughput.
- Interface directly with customers, project managers and site supervisors to clarify requirements, review quotes, provide status updates and support field installation or delivery planning.
- Ensure quality documentation and compliance for customer audits, ISO/AS certifications or contract-specific requirements—prepare inspection records, material traceability and process certifications.
- Control labor costs and overtime by optimizing schedules, forecasting workload, and recommending staffing adjustments; assist management with budgeting and workforce planning.
- Enforce environmental and finishing process controls for anodizing, powder-coating and chemical treatments—coordinate pre-treatment and hand-off to finishing vendors when out-sourced.
- Troubleshoot complex fabrication issues in real time, diagnosing root causes (fit, warpage, tolerance stack-up) and implementing containment and corrective actions to protect schedule and quality.
- Oversee fixture and tooling design/use: recommend improvements, prioritize repairs, and coordinate machining or fabrication of new jigs to increase repeatability and reduce setup times.
- Maintain and update product-specific manufacturing knowledge bases and training materials to preserve institutional knowledge across shifts and hires.
- Supervise shipping/receiving for finished assemblies—coordinate packing, crating, labeling, securement methods for aluminum parts and ensure compliance with carrier and export requirements where applicable.
- Enforce proper handling and storage procedures for aluminum (to prevent surface damage and corrosion), including conservation of protective films, pallets/racking, and climate considerations for certain alloys.

Educational Background
Minimum Education:
