Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Read, interpret, and apply engineering drawings, blueprints, and specifications to accurately layout, cut, form, and assemble aluminum structural components while validating dimensions and tolerances against project requirements.
  • Perform precision assembly of structural aluminum subassemblies and finished components using mechanical fasteners, blind rivets, solid rivets, torque-controlled bolts, chemical bonding/adhesives, and sealants to manufacturer and engineering specifications.
  • Execute TIG (GTAW) and MIG (GMAW) welding operations on aluminum alloys to ISO/ASME/AWS-compliant procedures, controlling heat input, weld sequencing, and distortion mitigation to maintain structural integrity and dimensional stability.
  • Operate and program production machinery such as CNC routers, waterjet/plasma cutters, braking presses, shear, forms, and press brakes to produce consistent parts to tight tolerances required for structural assemblies.
  • Set up, maintain, and operate pneumatic and hydraulic riveting systems, Huck bolting machines, and countersinking equipment to install hardware, flush fasteners, and prepare surfaces for final assembly with defect-free finishes.
  • Perform accurate measuring, marking, and layout using precision instruments (calipers, micrometers, protractors, height gauges, CMM verification where required) to ensure parts meet drawing tolerances and first-article inspection requirements.
  • Disassemble, inspect, and repair aluminum structural components following service bulletins, engineering change notices (ECNs), and repair manuals while documenting discrepancies, rework, and corrective actions in accordance with quality systems.
  • Follow and document prescribed cleaning, surface preparation, corrosion protection, and finishing processes including anodizing prep, alodine, primers, and protective coatings to preserve material properties and meet corrosion resistance requirements.
  • Maintain and prepare jigs, fixtures, templates, and tooling required for repeatable high-quality assembly and ensure fixtures are calibrated, labeled, and stored per shop procedures to reduce downtime and variation.
  • Conduct in-process and final quality inspections including dimensional checks, visual weld inspection, penetration checks, and leak or pressure testing where applicable, recording results and initiating nonconformance reports for out-of-spec conditions.
  • Apply complex fabrication techniques such as stretch forming, bending, beading, trimming, scarfing, and edge finishing to produce aerodynamic and structural parts with precise curvature and fit-up.
  • Interpret and implement engineering change orders (ECOs) and drawing revisions to update builds, perform retrofits, and ensure assemblies align with the current revision level and traceability requirements.
  • Collaborate with design engineers, manufacturing engineers, and quality personnel to propose manufacturable design improvements, cost reduction ideas, or process changes that maintain structural performance while improving efficiency.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate travel and material usage logs, build packets, and traceability documentation for raw materials, heat numbers, lot numbers, and serializations to meet audit and certification requirements (AS9100, NADCAP).
  • Apply safe material handling techniques, operate overhead cranes, hoists, and forklifts to maneuver large or heavy aluminum assemblies while following lockout/tagout, confined space, and PPE protocols to minimize injury risk.
  • Troubleshoot fit-up, distortion, and weld-related defects by adjusting sequence, fixturing, and preheat/postheat processes, and by performing controlled straightening and rework within permissible repair limits.
  • Execute spot repairs, patching, and replacement of skin panels, stringers, rib sections, and longerons with meticulous attention to mating surfaces and fastener patterns to ensure structural load paths remain intact.
  • Perform pre- and post-processing tasks such as deburring, grinding, sanding, and polishing to produce aerospace- or marine-grade finishes and to remove burrs or sharp edges that could lead to fatigue initiation.
  • Enforce quality system requirements by participating in internal audits, root-cause analysis, and corrective action initiatives; assist in maintaining certifications and complying with customer-specific requirements.
  • Train and mentor junior fabricators and apprentices on best practices for aluminum handling, tooling setup, welding parameters, rivet installation, and quality checks to build shop capability and maintain skilled labor continuity.
  • Coordinate production sequencing and daily priorities with planners and supervisors to meet delivery schedules while balancing scrap reduction and on-time first-pass yield targets.
  • Inspect incoming aluminum stock and purchased components for compliance with material specifications, document discrepancies, and quarantine non-conforming materials per supplier quality procedures.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and 5S-compliant workspace, perform routine preventive maintenance on fabrication equipment, report safety hazards, and suggest improvements to workspace ergonomics and workflow.
  • Participate in fabrication trials, prototype builds, and first-article demonstrations; document lessons learned and update standard work instructions to reduce lead times on future builds.
  • Communicate clearly with cross-functional teams, escalate technical issues to engineering timely, and prepare build/service reports, as-built documentation, and sign-offs required for customer acceptance.

Secondary Functions

  • Support continuous improvement projects by analyzing production metrics, scrap causes, and process bottlenecks and recommend Kaizen-based changes.
  • Assist quality and engineering teams with root cause investigations and corrective action plans for recurring fabrication defects.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Certificate or diploma from an accredited welding/fabrication program, trade school, or community college in metal fabrication, welding, or aerospace manufacturing technology.
  • Specialized certifications such as AWS TIG welding certification, FAA airframe experience (for aerospace roles), or NADCAP familiarity are valued.
