Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Read, interpret and apply engineering drawings, 3D models (CAD-derived prints), specifications, material lists and tolerance callouts to plan and execute aluminum structural assembly and fit-up activities with consistent accuracy and traceability.
- Perform precise layout, scribing and marking of aluminum sheets, extrusions and formed components using engineering measurements and templates to ensure cut and fit accuracy to drawing tolerances.
- Execute precision fit-up of structural assemblies by aligning parts, installing clecos and temporary fasteners, and using jigs, fixtures and clamps to control part geometry prior to permanent fastening.
- Drill, countersink, deburr and prepare aluminum components for mechanical fastening using hand and power tools, drill presses and portable drilling rigs while maintaining hole location and edge distance per specification.
- Install solid rivets, blind rivets, Hi-Lok®/Hi-Shear® fasteners, bolts and threaded inserts to assemblies using pneumatic, hydraulic and manual installation tools and verify fastener installation torque and seating.
- Perform aluminum welding and brazing tasks where required (TIG/MIG or resistance techniques) per welding procedure specifications, including preheat, interpass controls and post-weld inspections when role requires welding certification.
- Apply aviation- or marine-grade adhesives, sealants, primers and corrosion inhibitors to mating surfaces, joints and fastener locations using correct application techniques and cure schedules to meet environmental and structural requirements.
- Trim, file, machine and finish edges, contours and mating surfaces to achieve required fits, smooth transitions and correct tolerances while preventing stress concentrations or damage to corrosion-protective coatings.
- Use precision measurement instruments (calipers, micrometers, height gauges, laser trackers, bore gauges and coordinate measuring machines) to verify dimensions, hole positions and alignment against drawing requirements.
- Conduct inline and final dimensional inspections, document measurement data, generate non-conformance reports and collaborate with Quality to disposition defects and implement corrective actions.
- Interpret and apply geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) callouts and understand fits/clearances in assemblies to ensure interchangeability and structural integrity.
- Read and adhere to material specifications, heat-treatment labels, alloy designations and corrosion control procedures to avoid mixing incompatible materials and to maintain product reliability.
- Set up, operate and maintain assembly jigs, templates and fixtures; adjust tooling to compensate for material variability and to achieve repeatable, consistent assembly outcomes.
- Prepare parts for bonding operations including cleaning, abrading and masking; ensure environmental controls and cleanliness standards are met for durable adhesive bonds.
- Collaborate with machinists, engineers and planners to escalate design issues, propose fit improvements, and implement engineering change notices (ECNs) to streamline assembly and improve manufacturability.
- Follow safety protocols including lockout/tagout, confined space procedures, fall protection, respiratory protection and use of personal protective equipment (PPE) when cutting, machining or assembling aluminum structures.
- Maintain accurate assembly records, traveler documents, torque records and fastener lot traceability for regulatory compliance (FAA, ABS, DNV, ISO as applicable) and audit readiness.
- Participate in first article inspections, build mock-ups and prototype assemblies to validate processes and identify manufacturing risks before full production.
- Train and mentor junior fitters and apprentices on best practices for aluminum handling, fixturing, hole preparation, riveting techniques and inspection criteria to raise team capability.
- Troubleshoot assembly issues in real time, using root cause analysis to correct misalignment, fit-up problems or out-of-tolerance conditions and recommend fixture or process modifications.
- Perform corrosion prevention tasks such as sealant bead application, edge treatment and installation of protective fasteners to meet product life and environmental exposure requirements.
- Ensure housekeeping of work areas, safe storage of aluminum stock and maintenance of tooling, pneumatic riveters, countersink bits and measuring equipment to preserve accuracy and safety.
- Coordinate with production scheduling and supply chain to sequence assemblies, confirm parts availability, and minimize rework and downtime due to missing or incorrect components.
- Support non-destructive testing (NDT) processes where required (visual, dye-penetrant, eddy current) by preparing parts and partnering with certified inspectors to confirm structural soundness.

Educational Background
Minimum Education:

- Vocational certificate or diploma in Manufacturing Technology, Metal Fabrication or Aerospace Assembly.
