Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Assist the lead aluminium window fitter with unloading, carrying and staging aluminium frames, sashes, glass units, and hardware on-site while adhering to safe manual handling techniques and using lifting aids where appropriate.
  • Measure door and window openings, verify site dimensions against shop drawings and material lists, and report discrepancies to the fitter or site supervisor to ensure correct fit and reduce rework.
  • Prepare and clean window openings and surrounding surfaces, remove existing frames and sills when required, and ensure surfaces are level, plumb and sound before installation begins.
  • Securely position and temporarily fix aluminium frames and units using screws, shims and wedges; maintain alignment while the fitter performs final fixing and adjustments to achieve correct operation and weatherproofing.
  • Support glazing operations by handling glass panels, installing gasket systems, setting glazing beads or beading, and checking glass edge clearance and packer placement to prevent stress points.
  • Apply sealants, silicone, and foam to perimeter joints and transoms under guidance, ensuring continuous, neat beads that meet manufacturer and industry weatherproofing standards.
  • Operate and maintain common workshop and site power tools—circular saws with non-ferrous blades, mitre saws, drills, impact drivers, rivet guns and grinders—observing tool-specific safety protocols.
  • Cut and trim aluminium profiles, channels, gaskets and glazing beads to length using hand tools and abrasive/cold saws, ensuring accurate, square cuts for proper assembly.
  • Fit and adjust hardware components such as hinges, handles, locks, friction stays and weatherstrips; prepare fittings for final commissioning by the fitter.
  • Assist with foam insulation, thermal break placement and accessory installation (e.g., drainage holes, weep systems) to support thermal and weather performance of installed windows.
  • Load, unload and prepare materials in the fabrication shop or van, ensure correct labeling and staging, and assist in simple bench assembly tasks under supervision.
  • Help fit temporary protections (edge protection, floor coverings) around work areas to protect client property and minimise damage during installation.
  • Support the quality control process by performing basic checks—sight lines, opening/closing operation, seal continuity—and by documenting and reporting minor defects to the fitter or site manager.
  • Maintain toolboxes, power tool batteries and consumables; perform routine cleaning, sharpening and basic adjustments to keep workshop and site tooling ready for use.
  • Follow site health & safety procedures, wear appropriate PPE, participate in toolbox talks, use fall protection and ladders correctly when assisting with elevated installations.
  • Assist with scaffold erection/dismantling support and safe ladder usage under direction of a competent person; prepare and tidy up site at the end of each shift to maintain safe access and egress.
  • Support logistics by helping pack and secure installed units for transit, assist with loading/unloading vans, and ensure proper handling to avoid damage to glass and aluminium components.
  • Execute basic fabrication operations such as punching, drilling, rivet setting and minor bench-fitting tasks for prefabrication of components prior to site delivery.
  • Liaise politely with clients and site contacts to explain short delays or space requirements, maintain a professional demeanour on-site, and escalate customer concerns to the fitter or supervisor.
  • Maintain accurate site paperwork: delivery checks, damage reports, waste logs, and simple installation checklists to aid project completion and billing.
  • Dispose of construction waste and removed frames responsibly, segregate recyclable materials (aluminium, glass) and follow site waste management and COSHH guidance for sealants and solvents.
  • Assist with on-site measurements and sample marking for bespoke fabrications; record critical dimensions and hand them to the fitter or fabrication team with clear notes to avoid manufacturing errors.

Secondary Functions

  • Support the fitter with checking and counting materials against packing lists and job cards to ensure all required parts are available before installation begins.
  • Help maintain an organised van and workshop stock, report low consumables, and support simple inventory rotations to minimise job delays.
  • Participate in basic on-the-job training sessions to learn fitting techniques, glazing methods, and manufacturer installation guidance.
  • Prepare and maintain simple job folders and photographic records of pre-installation and post-installation conditions for QA and client records.
  • Assist project managers and fitters with ad-hoc site tasks such as temporary weatherproofing, barricading, or materials procurement errands.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement by reporting recurring installation challenges and suggesting small process improvements to reduce waste and rework.
  • Support machine operators and fabricators during busy periods by feeding components, applying general labour tasks in the shop, and performing light maintenance tasks.
  • Help implement site-specific safety plans and document near-miss incidents or hazards to support a safer working environment for the installation team.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Safe manual handling and load-carrying techniques for glass and metal components.
  • Basic glazing skills: installing gaskets, beads, setting glass, and understanding IGU handling.
