Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Accurately measure aluminum profiles, frames, sashes, and glass openings using tape measures, calipers, and squares to prepare components for cutting and assembly according to job tickets and fabrication drawings.
- Safely load, unload, and stage aluminum extrusions, glass, gaskets, sealants, and hardware in the shop and on job sites, following weight and handling procedures to prevent damage and injury.
- Select and operate cutting equipment (miter saws, chop saws, band saws, CNC saws) to cut aluminum extrusions and trim glass stops to specified lengths and miter angles while maintaining tight tolerances.
- Assist bench fabricators with millwork tasks such as drilling, tapping, countersinking, punching, and rivet setting to prepare frames and components for assembly and hardware installation.
- Assemble window frames, sashes, and storefront units using hand and pneumatic tools, ensuring square assemblies, proper corner keying, and secure fastening per fabrication standards.
- Prepare glazing openings and set glass or polycarbonate panels into frames, install setting blocks, glazing beads, and retainers while ensuring proper edge clearance and support to prevent glass stress.
- Apply gaskets, weatherstrips, and seals accurately and consistently to ensure weather-tight performance, following manufacturer specifications for compression and orientation.
- Dispense and apply sealants/caulks (silicone, polyurethane) to joints, corners, and perimeter interfaces using caulking guns and finishing tools to produce neat, uniform beads and water-tight seals.
- Inspect fabricated units and installed components visually and with measuring tools for dimensional accuracy, surface finish, glass alignment, and correct hardware operation; document and report defects to lead personnel.
- Assist installers on job sites with carrying and setting frames, shimming, temporary bracing, mechanical fastening, and final sealing to meet project schedules and installation tolerances.
- Package finished window units and storefront sections for shipment, protecting corners and glass with padding, wrapping, and custom crates, and label shipments per dispatch paperwork.
- Track parts, consumables, and inventory levels (gaskets, sealants, screws, anchors) and notify supervisors to replenish stock to avoid production delays.
- Operate material handling equipment such as hoists, dollies, compact forklifts, and lifting clamps to move glass and heavy assemblies safely under supervision and in compliance with PPE and lift rules.
- Read and interpret basic fabrication drawings, cut lists, and installation instructions to follow job requirements and communicate discrepancies or missing information to supervisors.
- Assist with finish operations including sanding, grinding, deburring aluminum edges, and preparing surfaces for anodizing, paint, or powder coat; maintain part cleanliness to prevent finish defects.
- Participate in pre-installation site checks and follow installers’ direction to adapt shop-built units for field conditions, including minor modding or rework when required.
- Perform routine cleaning and preventive maintenance of tools, saws, workstations, and shop equipment to maintain a safe, organized, and productive work environment.
- Follow all safety rules and PPE requirements, participate in toolbox talks, and report unsafe conditions or incidents promptly to promote OSHA-compliant operations.
- Help complete production documentation, time sheets, QC checklists, and packing lists accurately to support traceability and quality assurance processes.
- Support bench testing and mock-ups for new window configurations, assisting senior fabricators with fit-up trials and providing feedback to improve assembly sequences and tooling.
- Assist with on-site punch lists and warranty repairs, removing and reinstalling glazing components, re-sealing joints, and replacing damaged hardware under guidance.
- Collaborate with team members to meet daily production targets, adapt to shifting priorities, and contribute to continuous improvement suggestions for workflow and waste reduction.
- Maintain awareness of material yield and scrap, cutting patterns, and make recommendations to reduce waste and improve material utilization.
Secondary Functions
- Help coordinate loading schedules with shipping and installation teams to ensure timely delivery and minimize double handling.
- Participate in cross-training rotations (glazing, fabrication, installation) to build broader shop competencies and backfill as needed.
- Support cycle counts and basic inventory audits, tagging parts and reporting discrepancies to warehouse leads.
- Assist in maintaining safety records, tool calibration logs, and machine maintenance checklists to support compliance.
- Provide basic on-site customer support when installers require immediate shop assistance (minor fabrication or modifications).
- Help orient and mentor new helpers on safe tool use, proper measurements, and company standard work procedures.
- Participate in lean initiatives and 5S activities to keep the shop organized, efficient, and safe.
