Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

Prepare, inspect, calibrate, and maintain anesthesia machines, ventilators, vaporizers, breathing circuits, suction units, and monitoring equipment to ensure readiness and safety for all cases.
Assist the anesthesiologist with preoperative patient assessments by conducting focused airway exams, reviewing current medications and allergies, confirming NPO status, and documenting relevant findings in the electronic health record (EHR).
Set up and verify invasive and noninvasive monitoring devices (ECG, NIBP, SpO2, capnography, temperature probes, arterial pressure transducers) and troubleshoot alarms and waveform issues during procedures.

Prepare, label, dilute, and deliver anesthesia-related medications and fluids safely and accurately under the direction of the anesthesiologist, adhering to medication administration and controlled substance policies.
Facilitate induction of anesthesia by assisting with airway management including bag-mask ventilation, placement and confirmation of supraglottic airway devices (LMA), endotracheal tube preparation, and assisting with rapid sequence induction as directed.
Support intraoperative anesthetic management by adjusting ventilator settings, administering bolus doses of emergency medications under direction, and providing hands-on assistance for patient positioning, surgical access, and sterile field maintenance.
Provide assistance during regional anesthesia and nerve block setup by preparing sterile trays, ultrasound equipment, nerve stimulators, and monitoring, and by supporting the anesthesiologist in maintaining sterility and patient comfort.
Monitor physiologic parameters continuously, recognize early signs of hemodynamic instability or respiratory compromise, and promptly escalate concerns to the supervising anesthesiologist while initiating immediate supportive measures as appropriate.
Manage perioperative patient transfers including safe transport from pre-op to OR and from OR to PACU/ICU, ensuring documentation, lines/tubes securement, and continuity of care.
Participate in emergence and extubation by assisting with airway suctioning, extubation readiness checks, and providing post-extubation airway support and monitoring until transfer to post-anesthesia care.
Maintain and manage anesthesia supplies and controlled substances in the anesthesia cart/pyxis including inventory reconciliation, controlled substance documentation, diversion prevention, and restocking per hospital policy.
Participate in anesthesia-related emergency responses, including code blue and rapid response activations, functioning as a skilled team member in airway management, medication preparation, and equipment setup.
Document anesthesia care, interventions, medications, and monitoring data accurately and in real time in the EHR, ensuring compliance with institutional, legal, and billing requirements.
Conduct routine OR turnover support to optimize room readiness, including machine breathing circuit exchanges, surface cleaning support, and re-stocking anesthesia-related supplies between cases.
Troubleshoot anesthesia machine and monitor malfunctions in coordination with clinical engineering, initiating backup manual ventilation or alternative monitoring until equipment is restored.
Apply and enforce sterile technique consistently for invasive procedures and assist in maintaining aseptic conditions for regional anesthesia and invasive monitoring procedures.
Educate patients and family members on perioperative airway and monitoring processes when appropriate, providing reassurance and answering questions consistent with the anesthesiologist's plan.
Participate in departmental quality improvement initiatives, morbidity and mortality reviews, and adverse event reporting with recommendations for process improvements and safety enhancements.
Assist in training, orienting, and mentoring new anesthesia assistants, anesthesia technologists, surgical techs, and student learners; demonstrate proper procedures, equipment use, and documentation standards.
Maintain up-to-date knowledge of institutional policies, anesthesia-related guidelines (ASA and AANA recommendations where applicable), and state regulatory requirements for anesthesia practice and controlled substance handling.
Ensure compliance with infection prevention standards, sterilization procedures, and device reprocessing protocols for anesthesia instruments and airway devices.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

Associate degree in Anesthesia Technology, Respiratory Therapy, Nursing, or related allied health field; OR graduation from an accredited anesthesia assistant/technician program.

Preferred Education:

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Anesthesia Assistant program, Anesthesiologist Assistant (AA) or Certified Anesthesia Assistant (CAA) credential, or equivalent advanced perioperative training.

Experience Requirements
