- Manage airway and ventilatory support in routine and difficult airway scenarios: perform endotracheal intubation (direct and video), laryngeal mask airway placement, emergency front-of-neck access when indicated, and advanced ventilator management.
- Deliver monitored anesthesia care (MAC) for sedation cases and outpatient procedures, ensuring patient comfort while maintaining spontaneous ventilation and hemodynamic safety.
- Insert and manage invasive monitors as required: arterial lines, central venous catheters, pulmonary artery catheters (when indicated), and transesophageal echocardiography collaboration for intraoperative hemodynamic optimization.
- Optimize perioperative cardiovascular status: interpret invasive waveforms, manage vasoactive infusions, transfusion decisions, and coordinate with surgical teams on fluid strategy and blood product use.
- Provide perioperative pain management: multimodal analgesia plans, opioid-sparing strategies, continuous peripheral nerve catheter management, and coordination of postoperative pain services.
- Conduct obstetric anesthesia care including labor analgesia (epidural/spinal), cesarean section anesthesia, management of obstetric hemorrhage, and neonatal considerations in collaboration with obstetrics and neonatology.
- Deliver pediatric anesthesia across age ranges: preoperative preparation, size-appropriate dosing and equipment use, fasted-status assessment, and coordination with pediatric surgical and critical care teams.
- Participate in critical care support and rapid response: manage hemodynamically unstable patients, resuscitation, ventilator management in ICU settings, and handover to intensivists when needed.
- Maintain accurate, compliant anesthesia documentation in the anesthesia information management system (AIMS) and electronic medical record (EMR), including anesthesia record, medication logs, consent, and postoperative orders.
- Apply up-to-date pharmacology and dosing for perioperative drugs including induction agents, muscle relaxants, reversal agents, local anesthetics, and vasoactive medications, with attention to renal/hepatic dosing adjustments.
- Lead postoperative handovers and rounding: assess emergence, pain control, nausea/vomiting, respiratory function, and readiness for PACU discharge or ICU admission; provide clear written and verbal orders for ongoing care.
- Execute rapid assessment and stabilization of anesthesia-related emergencies: malignant hyperthermia recognition and treatment, anaphylaxis management, airway obstruction, acute hemorrhage, and cardiovascular collapse.
- Participate in preoperative optimization clinics and enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols to reduce complications, shorten length of stay, and improve functional outcomes.
- Supervise and mentor anesthesia trainees, CRNA students, anesthesiology residents, and anesthesia assistants; provide bedside teaching, simulation training, and case reviews.
- Collaborate with surgical teams, nursing, perfusionists, pharmacy, and blood bank to coordinate perioperative care, patient flow, equipment availability, and contingency planning.
- Maintain equipment competence: anesthesia machines, ventilators, ultrasound for vascular access and nerve blocks, regional block needles and catheters, difficult airway carts, and point-of-care testing devices.
- Ensure compliance with infection control policies, sedation and controlled substance regulations, institutional protocols, and ASA practice guidelines across all anesthesia services.
- Conduct quality improvement activities: morbidity and mortality reviews, root cause analysis of adverse events, anesthesia safety checklists, and data-driven initiatives to reduce perioperative complications.
- Participate in departmental coverage scheduling, on-call duties, and weekend rotation coverage while managing fatigue and cognitive workload to maintain patient safety and clinical performance.
- Communicate empathetically and clearly with patients and families: obtain informed consent, explain risks/benefits of anesthetic options, and address perioperative anxieties and expectations.
Secondary Functions
- Contribute to departmental policy development, anesthesia protocols, and best practice standards aligned with ASA and local regulatory guidance.
- Support multidisciplinary committees (perioperative services, patient safety, opioid stewardship) and lead small projects to improve workflows and patient outcomes.
- Assist in collection and reporting of clinical metrics and anesthesia quality indicators for institutional dashboards and accreditation requirements.
- Participate in continuing medical education (CME), credentialing processes, and maintenance of certification activities to ensure high standards of clinical competence.
- Engage in community outreach, patient education programs, and preoperative clinic initiatives to improve access and comprehension of anesthesia care.
