Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conduct thorough intake assessments for incoming animals, documenting medical history, behavior observations, microchip and owner information, and immediate needs in the shelter management system to ensure accurate care plans and traceability.
  • Perform daily hands-on animal care including feeding, cleaning, exercising, socialization, enrichment, and monitoring of physical and behavioral status to promote welfare and reduce stress-related behaviors.

  • Coordinate and execute transports and rescues, including loading/unloading animals, maintaining transport logs, ensuring proper containment and temperature control, and complying with local and interstate transport regulations.
  • Manage and document vaccination, deworming, and parasite control protocols under veterinary direction, ensuring vaccinations and preventive treatments are administered on schedule and recorded accurately.
  • Conduct behavioral evaluations to identify signs of fear, aggression, socialization needs, and enrichment opportunities; create and follow behavior modification or rehabilitation plans and flag animals for specialist intervention when needed.
  • Facilitate adoption processes by educating potential adopters on animal care, behavior, medical needs, and post-adoption support; complete adoption paperwork, process payments, and maintain accurate records.
  • Maintain a clean, sanitary, and safe shelter environment by following biosecurity protocols, infection control procedures, proper waste disposal, and routine sanitation of kennels, isolation areas, and common spaces to reduce disease spread.
  • Supervise and train volunteers and new staff on safe animal handling, cleaning procedures, enrichment routines, and the organization’s welfare policies to build a competent, consistent caregiving team.

  • Support case management for cruelty or neglect investigations by collecting evidence, documenting findings, providing courtroom testimony if required, and collaborating with law enforcement or humane investigators.
  • Conduct outreach and education programs in schools, community centers, and at events to promote responsible pet ownership, spay/neuter resources, vaccination clinics, and the organization’s mission.
  • Execute humane euthanasia protocols only under authorized circumstances and with compassionate, professional conduct where this responsibility applies and is performed by or under the supervision of licensed personnel.
  • Participate in emergency response and disaster sheltering operations, handling large-scale intakes, triage, and coordination with emergency services to ensure animal safety and continuity of care.
  • Assist with fundraising events, adoption fairs, and community partnerships by setting up adoption booths, transporting animals to off-site events, and representing the organization professionally to increase placement rates.
  • Monitor and maintain supplies and inventory for medical, sheltering, and cleaning needs; place orders, track stock levels, and report discrepancies to ensure uninterrupted operations.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High school diploma or GED required.
