Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Design, develop, and deliver comprehensive course curricula and lesson plans in animation fundamentals and advanced topics (2D animation, 3D modeling, rigging, lighting, rendering, compositing, and motion graphics) that align with industry standards and institutional learning outcomes.
  • Teach hands-on practical labs and studio courses using professional tools (Autodesk Maya, Blender, Toon Boom Harmony, Adobe After Effects, Adobe Animate, Photoshop, Illustrator) while demonstrating industry best practices for pipeline efficiency, asset management, and version control.
  • Develop progressive learning modules that scaffold student competency across key animation workflows including concept development, storyboarding, animatic creation, character animation, facial animation, lip-sync, cloth and hair simulation, and final compositing.
  • Create rubrics, grading standards, and assessment instruments to objectively evaluate student performance in technical, creative, and collaborative project work, providing timely, actionable feedback to support student growth and portfolio development.
  • Mentor and advise students on individual learning plans, career pathways, internship placement, resume and demo reel development, interview preparation, and networking strategies to help graduates secure employment in studios, agencies, or independent projects.
  • Lead and supervise student production teams on capstone or studio projects, coordinating schedules, assigning roles (modeler, rigger, animator, compositor), enforcing production milestones, and teaching collaborative pipeline practices used in professional studios.
  • Prepare and present detailed lectures and demonstrations on animation principles (timing, spacing, squash and stretch, arcs, anticipation), advanced rigging concepts, deformation systems, and procedural animation techniques to cultivate strong foundational and advanced skills.
  • Integrate game engine workflows (Unity, Unreal Engine) into curriculum when applicable, teaching students to export animation assets to real-time environments, set up animation blueprints, and optimize assets for interactive and VR/AR experiences.
  • Maintain and update course materials to reflect new tool releases, plugin ecosystems, anti-cheat and academic integrity policies, and evolving industry pipelines for film, television, advertising, and games.
  • Conduct regular portfolio reviews, reel critiques, and career coaching sessions, providing constructive, market-relevant feedback and helping students curate professional-quality demo reels, online portfolios, and showreels optimized for recruiters and ATS.
  • Facilitate workshops and masterclasses with industry guest speakers, alumni professionals, and studio partners to provide students with real-world perspectives, networking opportunities, and exposure to current production practices.
  • Develop and administer practical assignments and project briefs that simulate studio deliverables, including storyboards, animatics, blocking, spline work, polishing passes, lighting, and final render/comp comp pipelines.
  • Monitor and maintain classroom and lab environments, ensure students follow hardware and software usage policies, and work with IT to troubleshoot software installations, license management (floating licenses, network licenses), and render farm access.
  • Evaluate and recommend equipment, software, and course resources (hardware specs, GPU/CPU requirements, external drives, Wacom tablets, motion capture solutions) to keep the program competitive and aligned with industry demands.
  • Implement inclusive teaching practices and differentiated instruction strategies to support diverse learners, accommodate varying skill levels, and ensure accessibility in course delivery and assessment.
  • Track student attendance, progress reports, and academic records; prepare midterm and final grades and provide documentation for student advising and institutional accreditation reviews.
  • Participate in curriculum review committees, accreditation processes, program assessment cycles, and continuous improvement initiatives to raise program quality and alignment with employer needs.
  • Collaborate with career services, internship coordinators, and studio liaison teams to secure internship placements, live project opportunities, and potential employment channels for students.
  • Research and publish or present educational techniques, pedagogy in animation instruction, or case studies demonstrating improvements in student outcomes and employability.
  • Troubleshoot technical and creative problems encountered by students during production, offering one-on-one support for rigging issues, animation curves, render artifacts, and compositing errors.
  • Lead and coordinate student exhibitions, demo nights, and public showreel events; manage logistics for submitting student work to festivals, competitions, and industry showcases to increase program visibility and student career opportunities.
  • Ensure compliance with institutional policies, health and safety guidelines for studio spaces, and copyright/licensing regulations for third-party assets, sound effects, and licensed software used in coursework.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Practical experience with 2D animation pipelines and tools such as Toon Boom Harmony, Adobe Animate, or TVPaint for frame-by-frame and cut-out animation.
  • Competence with compositing and motion graphics tools: Adobe After Effects, Nuke (basic), and Photoshop for texture creation and post-processing.

  • Understanding of production pipelines, asset versioning, source control concepts (Perforce/Git), and task tracking in project management tools (Shotgun, Jira, Trello).
  • Demonstrated ability to teach digital storytelling and pre-production processes: concept art, storyboarding, animatics, and directing performance through storyboard-to-screen workflows.
  • Knowledge of motion capture workflows and cleanup, including retargeting, keyframe conversion, and pipeline integration for hybrid mocap/manual animation.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Animation, Fine Arts, Digital Media, Film Production, Game Design, Computer Graphics, or equivalent professional experience in animation and studio production.

Preferred Education:

  • Master’s degree, MFA, or postgraduate certificate in Animation, Visual Effects, Motion Design, or Animation Pedagogy preferred for advanced teaching or leadership roles.
