  • Senior Animator / Lead Animator
  • Animation Director / Cinematic Director
  • Technical Animation Director or Character Technical Director (CTD)

Lateral Moves:

  • Character Rigger / Rigging Specialist
  • VFX Artist or FX Technical Artist
  • Gameplay Animator or Technical Artist (Engine-side)

Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Create polished, performance-driven character animations (keyframe and motion-capture cleanup) that convey clear emotion, weight, timing, and storytelling for cinematic, game, and commercial projects.
  • Translate director and art director briefs into staged animation sequences, previs, and final shots that meet creative and technical objectives while adhering to project style guides.
  • Develop and implement walk cycles, run cycles, combat animations, emotes, and looping behaviors optimized for target platforms including film, broadcast, mobile, console, and web.
  • Perform motion capture post-processing: retargeting, cleanup, blending, and integration into character rigs to achieve natural and expressive motion that matches the creative intent.
  • Rig and skin simple to complex character setups (or collaborate with rigging specialists), create facial rigs and blendshape systems, and deliver animation-ready assets with robust deformation performance.
  • Produce high-quality motion graphics, title sequences, and animated UI elements using After Effects, Cinema 4D, or equivalent tools for marketing, broadcast, and in-app experiences.
  • Work within real-time engines (Unity, Unreal Engine) to import, retarget, optimize, and implement animations, ensuring consistent playback, state machines, and performance budgets.
  • Collaborate with VFX, lighting, and compositing teams to deliver final composited shots, provide correct render passes and AOVs, and troubleshoot integration issues for seamless visual results.
  • Create and maintain animation libraries, reusable cycles, placeholders, and standardized naming conventions to accelerate production and maintain consistency across sequences and projects.
  • Participate in editorial and creative review sessions, receiving and applying feedback to iterate animations quickly while documenting changes and version history.
  • Implement IK/FK switching, procedural animation systems, and animation layering techniques to enable dynamic and interactive behavioral responses in-engine.
  • Author and maintain technical animation documentation, pipeline checklists, and best practices for animators and cross-functional teams to streamline handoffs.
  • Optimize rig complexity, mesh topology, keyframe density, and animation file sizes to meet performance constraints for games and real-time applications without compromising visual fidelity.
  • Establish reliable QA processes for animation: frame-by-frame polish, contact and weight checks, silhouette clarity, and secondary motion consistency across all delivered assets.
  • Mentor junior animators and interns, provide constructive reviews, run training sessions on tools and pipeline workflows, and help maintain a collaborative studio culture.
  • Coordinate with producers and leads to estimate animation tasks, timeline requirements, asset dependencies, and milestone deliverables for sprints and production schedules.
  • Bake and export animations to standard formats (FBX, Alembic) and prepare shot packages with correct frame ranges, naming, metadata, and playback settings for downstream teams.
  • Integrate audio cues and dialog timing into animation sequences, implement lip-sync and facial animation to match voice tracks, and ensure beats land on key sound events.
  • Drive continuous improvement by researching and prototyping new animation tools, scripts (Python/MEL), plugins, and workflows (procedural/physics-driven) that increase quality or throughput.
  • Troubleshoot cross-platform issues such as skeleton mismatches, scale/units problems, animation compression artifacts, and engine-specific blending anomalies, providing robust fixes and workarounds.
  • Ensure accessibility and compliance needs are considered in UI/UX animation decisions and document platform-specific constraints (mobile touch targets, console framerates, web codecs).
  • Collaborate on marketing and showreel assets (turntables, banners, cutscenes), contributing animation content and technical guidance to promotional materials and recruitment reels.

Secondary Functions

  • Support ad-hoc creative requests and quick-turn animation tasks for pitches, demos, and client reviews.
  • Contribute to pipeline automation by writing or refining scripts for batch exporting, naming normalization, and scene cleanup.
  • Assist in cross-discipline planning (art, engineering, audio) to ensure animation dependencies and integration points are well-defined.
  • Help maintain version control and asset management best practices with Perforce, Git LFS, or other studio VCS systems.
  • Participate in recruitment interviews and candidate portfolio reviews when requested by hiring leads.
  • Conduct technical research and vendor evaluations for middleware (motion-capture services, auto-riggers, retargeting tools) to support studio scaling.
  • Track and report animation KPIs and throughput metrics to production leads to identify bottlenecks and resource needs.
  • Provide support and QA for platform-specific animation builds, helping to triage issues in staging and playtest environments.
  • Deliver occasional documentation and training materials for cross-team onboarding and knowledge transfer.
  • Attend conferences, internal demos, and creative reviews to represent the animation team and incorporate industry trends into studio practice.

Required Skills & Competencies
