Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Produce high-quality character and creature animation (keyframe and motion-capture refinement) that supports story, emotion and gameplay across cinematic and in-game sequences while meeting technical performance and memory budgets.
  • Block, refine and polish animation shots from layout through final pass, delivering smooth timing, weight, anticipation and follow-through consistent with project style and animation principles.
  • Collaborate closely with directors, art leads, game designers and producers to interpret briefs, incorporate feedback, and iterate quickly to achieve creative goals within sprint and milestone schedules.
  • Retarget, clean and edit motion capture data using MotionBuilder or equivalent tools to adapt performances to different rigs and proportions while preserving natural motion and intent.
  • Implement and test animations in game engines (Unity, Unreal) including state machines, blend trees, animation montages, root motion handling, and runtime optimization.
  • Work with rigging and character teams to provide animation-friendly feedback, request corrective blendshapes/controls, and help prioritize rig fixes that unblock production.
  • Create loopable cycles, in-place and locomotion animations (walk, run, jump, transitions) that are production-tested and compatible with gameplay systems and physics.
  • Develop facial and lip-sync animation for dialogue-driven scenes using blendshapes, bones or facial rigs, aligning phonemes and expressions to recorded audio tracks for believable performances.
  • Maintain and adhere to animation pipeline standards, naming conventions, version control (Perforce/Git), file structure and delivery specifications to ensure cross-team consistency.
  • Contribute to cinematic direction by blocking camera moves and timing alongside cinematics and VFX teams, ensuring animation and camera work read correctly in final renders or game builds.
  • Optimize animation data (frame reduction, baked curves, compression-friendly keying) to minimize runtime cost without compromising visual fidelity on target platforms.
  • Create and maintain animation tests, previs and animatics to validate performance, gameplay feel and story beats prior to final polishing and rigging handoffs.
  • Mentor junior animators, provide constructive feedback on demo reels and internal reviews, and help maintain a consistent animation quality bar across the team.
  • Troubleshoot animation issues at both technical and artistic levels, including deformation problems, clipping, foot sliding and interpenetration with environment geometry.
  • Collaborate with VFX, lighting and compositing teams to ensure animated elements integrate seamlessly into final shots, including motion blur, particle interactions and layering.
  • Document best practices, animation recipes and pipeline tools usage for the team; propose and implement workflow improvements that reduce iteration time and increase quality.
  • Participate in motion capture shoots when required — directing actors, supervising marker placement, capturing reference footage, and ensuring clean actor performances for pipeline ingestion.
  • Prepare and export production-ready animation assets (Alembic, FBX) and provide clear handoffs to other disciplines such as technical artists, level designers and cinematics programmers.
  • Support localization and variant creation by creating alternative takes and export pipelines for different languages, cultural adaptations or gameplay scenarios, ensuring consistent emotional beats.
  • Maintain up-to-date demo reels and shot libraries representing current skill levels, and archive production assets following studio retention and backup policies.

Secondary Functions

  • Help triage and prioritize animation tasks during sprint planning and standups to align with product milestones and release schedules.
  • Support ad-hoc animation research and proof-of-concept work for new features such as procedural animation, inverse kinematics, ragdoll blending and animation-driven physics.
  • Work with technical artists to prototype tools or scripts (Python, MEL, C#) that automate repetitive tasks such as batch export, naming corrections, or retarget pipelines.
  • Contribute to cross-disciplinary reviews and postmortems to identify bottlenecks and capture lessons learned that improve future production cycles.
  • Participate in recruiting activities including portfolio reviews, animation tests and interview panels to help grow a strong animation team.
  • Liaise with QA and build engineers to diagnose and resolve runtime animation bugs reported during playtests or automated testing.
  • Evaluate third-party animation libraries and middleware (e.g., motion capture libraries, procedural animation plugins) and recommend integrations that benefit production.
  • Assist marketing and community teams by producing short animation clips, trailers, or social media snippets that showcase character performances and cinematic highlights.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Expertise in keyframe animation and character performance for both 2D and 3D pipelines, with a strong demo reel showing range and storytelling.
  • Proficiency with Autodesk Maya (rigging interface, animation graph editor, constraints), Blender, or equivalent 3D animation software.
  • Experience cleaning and retargeting motion capture data using MotionBuilder, Maya, or dedicated mocap tools.
  • Practical knowledge of game engines: Unity and/or Unreal Engine (animation blueprints, sequencer/cinematics, blend spaces, root motion).
