Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Lead seasonal concept and collection development by researching market trends, competitive assortments, lifestyle imagery, and consumer insights to define compelling product direction and storylines.
  • Create original sketches, flats, and rendered design boards that clearly communicate silhouette, construction, trims, colorways, and fabrications to internal stakeholders and external vendors.
  • Produce detailed tech packs and specification sheets with precise measurements, construction notes, stitch types, seam allowances, trim placements, and grading rules to ensure accurate sample and production outcomes.
  • Execute fabric and trim sourcing by evaluating fabrication options, requesting and reviewing swatches, negotiating pricing and lead-times with mills and trim vendors, and recommending sustainable alternatives where possible.
  • Partner with technical design and patternmaking teams to develop first samples, refining fit and construction through iterative fit sessions and clear feedback loops until garment requirements are met.
  • Translate design intent into manufacturable products by collaborating with patternmakers, graders, and production engineers to validate tolerance, production feasibility, and cost implications.
  • Create and maintain line sheets, colorways, and size ranges aligned with seasonal assortment plans and sales/merchandising strategies, ensuring clarity for internal teams and retail partners.
  • Manage costing and BOM (bill of materials) to optimize margin targets, working closely with sourcing and production to identify cost savings while preserving quality and design integrity.
  • Use PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) and PLM modules to manage spec versions, sample statuses, tech pack revisions, and vendor communications to maintain traceability across the product lifecycle.
  • Oversee sample timelines and development calendars, prioritize deliverables, escalate schedule risks, and work cross-functionally to ensure on-time proto and production approvals.
  • Conduct vendor selection and quality assurance visits, auditing suppliers for compliance, workmanship, minimum order quantities, and capacity, and ensuring adherence to brand standards.
  • Lead fit sessions with fit models, technical designers, and merchants to document fit comments, pattern changes, and size scale adjustments and to approve samples for production.
  • Prepare and present seasonal trend presentations, assortment rationales, and product narratives to merchandising, marketing, and executive stakeholders to secure buy-in and alignment.
  • Maintain and update a comprehensive trim library, fabric database, and archival reference of previous collections to inform future development and ensure repeatability.
  • Ensure product compliance with regulatory and safety standards (labels, care instructions, flammability where relevant), partnering with compliance teams for testing and documentation.
  • Liaise with production teams and vendors to troubleshoot in-line issues, evaluate pre-production and in-line defects, and implement corrective actions to reduce returns and quality complaints.
  • Collaborate with merchandising and inventory planning to set launch SKUs, assortments, and replenishment strategies that balance creative goals with inventory efficiency and sell-through targets.
  • Mentor and provide design direction to junior designers and interns, reviewing their sketches, tech packs, and sample feedback to develop team capabilities and ensure brand cohesion.
  • Drive sustainability initiatives within the design process, recommending recycled or certified materials, reduced-waste patterns, and circular design strategies compatible with production partners.
  • Maintain awareness of cost and margin implications of design decisions, advocating for strategic trade-offs that preserve brand DNA while meeting financial targets.
  • Support marketing and e-commerce teams with high-resolution imagery guidance, product descriptions, and feature call-outs for new product launches to improve conversion and reduce returns.
  • Maintain effective communication with cross-functional stakeholders (merchandising, sourcing, quality, operations) to align on product priorities, launch windows, and post-launch adjustments.
  • Analyze post-launch performance and customer feedback to inform iterative design improvements, size/fit modifications, and future assortment planning based on sales data and return reasons.
  • Keep abreast of textile innovations, manufacturing technologies (3D prototyping, digital printing, seamless knitting), and competitor moves to continuously evolve product offerings and processes.

  • Participate in cross-functional sprint planning or seasonal planning meetings to align design milestones with merchandising and production timelines.
  • Assist the product team with ad-hoc reporting on sample status, PLM updates, and collection readiness for leadership and retail partners.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Fashion Design, Apparel Design, Textile Design, or equivalent practical experience in apparel production.

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree with honors in Fashion Design, Textile Science, or related disciplines; industry certifications in PLM, CAD, or sustainable textiles.
