Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Conceptualize and design original graphic artwork and surface patterns for seasonal apparel collections, including all-over prints, placement prints, badges, logos, and trim designs aligned with brand direction and merchandising strategy.
- Produce high-quality vector artwork and production-ready files using Adobe Illustrator, Adobe Photoshop, and other design tools; ensure files meet factory specifications (AI/EPS/PDF) and adhere to color and print tolerances.
- Prepare multiple colorway options and Pantone color references for each graphic, maintaining accurate color libraries and swatches for print consistency across deliveries.
- Create detailed tech packs and spec sheets that document artwork placement, repeat sizes, scale, underbase, color separations, stitch counts (for embroidery), and any special production notes to ensure accurate factory execution.
- Design repeat patterns and layout tiles for textile printing (rotational, half-drop, mirrored, engineered placements), optimizing scale and repeat to achieve desired visual effect and efficient yardage usage.
- Perform pre-press preparation and color separations for screen printing and digital printing methods, including underbase for dark garments, trapping, and proper layering for spot vs. CMYK prints.
- Adapt artwork for multiple decoration techniques (screen print, direct-to-garment, sublimation, dye-sublimation, heat transfer, foil, flocking, embroidery), specifying stitch types, densities, and file conversions required for production.
- Collaborate with Product Development, Technical Design, and Production teams to validate artwork feasibility, material compatibility, and to troubleshoot production constraints such as print bleed, fabric stretch, and registration.
- Create photorealistic mockups and line sheets for internal reviews, merchandising presentations, and wholesale catalogs; supply accurate imagery for e-commerce and marketing teams.
- Manage and update the art asset library and digital asset management (DAM) systems to ensure version control, metadata tagging, archiving of previous seasons, and rapid retrieval for reorders and briefs.
- Liaise directly with external print vendors, embroidery houses, mills, and offshore factories to confirm artwork transfer, color matching, minimums, lead times, and quality expectations.
- Conduct quality assurance inspections on initial strike-offs, digital proofs, and production samples; document discrepancies, initiate corrective actions, and sign off on final production when standards are met.
- Research and incorporate trend, color, and cultural insights into concept boards and design proposals to maintain brand relevance and commercial appeal each season.
- Translate marketing and campaign briefs into on-brand graphic solutions, modifying artwork to meet promotional themes, collaborations, or limited-edition capsules.
- Maintain production calendars and prioritize multiple artwork requests across concurrent seasonal lines, ensuring timely delivery of print-ready files and meeting development milestones.
- Ensure all artwork complies with intellectual property, trademark, and licensing agreements; document sources for imagery and obtain necessary releases for third-party content.
- Optimize artwork for cost-effective production by reducing screen counts, consolidating colors, recommending alternative placement or print techniques, and advising on minimum order quantities.
- Provide mentorship and feedback to junior designers and interns on file setup, production best practices, and brand standards to elevate overall team output.
- Participate in fit sessions, pre-production reviews, and production floor visits to observe print runs, note registration or application issues, and iterate designs accordingly.
- Generate and maintain accurate artwork usage records and line-item identifiers for PLM/PDM systems, ensuring designs are linked to SKU-level product data.
- Implement sustainability-focused artwork choices when applicable (e.g., water-based inks, reduced dye consumption, placement adjustments to reduce waste) and collaborate with sourcing on eco-friendly options.
Secondary Functions
- Support seasonal merchandising teams by creating visuals for lookbooks, hang tags, packaging, and promo collateral that maintain consistent on-brand graphics.
- Assist marketing and e-commerce teams with retouched product imagery, web-optimized artwork exports, and campaign asset variations.
- Manage relationships with freelance illustrators or agency partners, coordinating briefings, deliverables, and creative reviews to scale design capacity.
- Participate in photoshoots, sample styling, and creative direction when graphics are central to the shoot concept.
- Enter and update artwork metadata and attachments in PLM systems, ensuring seamless handoff between design, development, and production teams.
- Track and report on artwork-related production issues and lessons learned to continuously improve processes and reduce rework.
- Support compliance checks for labeling and country-of-origin artwork placement and ensure regulatory artwork requirements are met for global markets.
- Help estimate artwork-related production costs (screens, embroidery digitizing, specialty treatments) to inform pricing and margin decisions.
- Coordinate archival and re-use of seasonal motifs, establishing a seasonal refresh strategy for core graphics and brand assets.
- Stay current on new print technologies, software updates, and production processes; propose pilot projects or sample studies to validate new techniques.
