Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Perform comprehensive diagnostics and troubleshooting on major household and light commercial appliances (refrigerators, freezers, ice makers, washers, dryers, ranges, ovens, cooktops, dishwashers, microwaves) using multimeters, leak detectors, refrigeration gauges, and manufacturer diagnostic tools.
- Disassemble, inspect, and replace defective components (motors, compressors, thermostats, control boards, valves, bearings, pumps, belts, door seals) and verify proper operation after repair to ensure customer satisfaction and safety.
- Recover, handle, and recharge refrigerants in accordance with EPA 608 regulations, including leak detection, evacuation, and proper documentation of refrigerant usage and disposal.
- Safely service gas appliances: test for gas leaks, replace burners/valves/thermocouples, adjust gas pressure, and comply with local and national gas safety codes.
- Read and interpret wiring diagrams, schematics, parts lists, and technical bulletins from manufacturers to identify root causes and appropriate repair procedures.
- Perform routine preventative maintenance and safety checks on appliances (cleaning coils, clearing drain lines, checking venting and seals, testing safety interlocks) to extend equipment life and reduce return visits.
- Use mobile devices and field service management (FSM) software to create accurate work orders, record diagnostics, parts used, labor time, upload photos, collect customer signatures, and close out service calls.
- Provide clear, professional communication with customers: explain diagnosis, present repair options and costs, obtain approvals, and advise on proper usage and maintenance to reduce future failures.
- Maintain a stocked service vehicle: organize inventory, restock commonly used parts, ensure tools and testing equipment are calibrated and in good working order to maximize first-visit fix rate.
- Order specialized parts and follow up with vendors or manufacturer parts departments to minimize downtime and expedite repairs when standard parts are not available.
- Perform manufacturer-authorized warranty repairs following brand-specific procedures and document warranty claims accurately to ensure reimbursement and compliance.
- Conduct software and firmware updates on smart appliances, perform network connectivity checks, and troubleshoot appliance IoT connectivity issues when applicable.
- Execute on-call and emergency repair assignments, prioritizing safety and quick restoration of essential appliances (refrigeration, hot water, medical equipment support in healthcare settings).
- Adhere to company safety policies and procedures, including lockout/tagout, PPE usage, ladder safety, and proper disposal of hazardous materials (solvents, refrigerants, batteries).
- Maintain detailed job notes and follow up on service reminders and promised callbacks to ensure jobs are fully resolved and customers are satisfied.
Secondary Functions
- Support training and mentoring of junior technicians and apprentices — demonstrating proper diagnostic techniques, tool use, and customer interaction best practices.
- Perform periodic inventory audits, identify slow-moving parts, and recommend stock adjustments to reduce vehicle downtime and improve parts availability.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives: provide feedback on common failure modes, parts quality, and service processes to inform warranty and product quality teams.
- Collaborate with dispatch and scheduling teams to optimize daily routes, minimize travel time, and improve productivity metrics and first-time fix rates.
- Assist in generating service quotes for large or complex installations and collaborate with sales teams on upgrade or replacement recommendations for customers.
- Ensure compliance with local building codes, permit requirements, and manufacturer installation instructions during appliance replacement or installation projects.
- Represent the company professionally at the customer site, resolving escalations and documenting any service exceptions or safety concerns for managerial review.
