Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair a wide range of household and light-commercial appliances (refrigerators, freezers, ranges, ovens, cooktops, dishwashers, washers, dryers, microwaves, and trash compactors) using standard and manufacturer-specific diagnostic tools, schematics, and software to restore full functionality on the first visit whenever possible.
  • Perform professional installations of new appliances including proper leveling, connection to electrical/gas/water hookups, configuration and calibration per manufacturer guidelines, and demonstration of operation and care to customers at completion of service.
  • Conduct comprehensive preventive maintenance and safety inspections on appliances — checking seals, hoses, thermostats, heating elements, compressors, motors, belts, vents, filters, and drains — and provide written recommendations to reduce future failures and extend equipment life.
  • Execute safe gas appliance service: shutoff and restart procedures, leak testing, burner/ignitor adjustments, and compliance with local gas and fire codes; coordinate with certified gas technicians when required by regulations.
  • Troubleshoot refrigeration and HVAC-related issues such as compressor, evaporator, condenser, refrigerant leaks, defrost systems, and fan motors; perform refrigerant recovery, evacuation and recharge when certified and in compliance with EPA regulations.
  • Interpret electrical and electronic schematics, wiring diagrams and control logic for microprocessor-controlled appliances; perform voltage, continuity and resistance tests with multimeters, ammeters, and other diagnostic instruments.
  • Maintain accurate and timely service records in mobile dispatch or field service management systems — logging diagnosis, repair steps, parts used, hours worked, photos, warranty information, and customer sign-offs to support billing and warranty claims.
  • Order, track, and manage replacement parts and inventory for service vehicle stock; identify critical parts to minimize return visits and coordinate with parts department for expedited delivery when necessary.
  • Provide professional customer-facing communication: explain diagnosis in plain language, outline repair options including cost estimates, obtain approvals, and deliver after-service care instructions to ensure customer satisfaction and reduce call-backs.
  • Meet or exceed service level agreements (SLAs) including response time targets, first-time-fix rate, mean time to repair, and customer satisfaction (CSAT) scores by prioritizing workload and leveraging diagnostic tools.
  • Process warranty work: collect necessary documentation, complete warranty forms per manufacturer requirements, submit claims, and follow up to ensure reimbursement and compliance.
  • Maintain vehicle and tool readiness: perform daily vehicle inspections, keep tools calibrated, and ensure compliance with company standards for appearance, PPE, and hygiene while on customer premises.
  • Implement and follow company safety and quality standards including lockout/tagout procedures, electrical safety protocols, use of PPE, ladder safety, and proper material handling to reduce workplace incidents.
  • Train and mentor junior technicians, apprentices, or new hires on diagnostic techniques, manufacturer repair procedures, documentation standards, and customer service best practices.
  • Support escalated technical issues from field or contact center by providing advanced troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and recommended corrective actions to prevent future failures.
  • Identify opportunities to upsell routine maintenance plans, extended service contracts, or recommended parts upgrades during service visits while maintaining trust and transparency with customers.
  • Coordinate complex in-home jobs that require multi-trade involvement (electrician, plumber, HVAC contractor) — schedule, communicate requirements, and verify satisfactory completion of related work.
  • Participate in recall or safety campaign notifications and execute remediation per manufacturer or regulatory instructions, ensuring affected appliances are repaired or removed from service.
  • Perform quality assurance inspections for newly installed appliances or recently repaired units to ensure compliance with manufacturer specifications and customer expectations prior to job completion.
  • Assist the warranty and parts teams in root-cause documentation for repeat failures, maintain defect trend logs, and provide feedback to purchasing and product teams to influence supplier/manufacturer quality improvements.
  • Use manufacturer diagnostic software, mobile apps, and online resources for firmware updates, technical bulletins, error-code interpretation, and step-by-step repair guidance to reduce diagnosis time.
  • Comply with environmental regulations for disposal of refrigerants, electronic components, and hazardous waste; complete required paperwork and use approved disposal vendors.
  • Handle emergency service calls (e.g., gas leaks, electrical hazards, major water leaks) calmly and competently, performing triage, temporary mitigation, and escalation to emergency services when necessary.

Educational Background
