Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Perform comprehensive on-site diagnostic evaluations of household and light-commercial appliances (refrigerators, freezers, dishwashers, washers, dryers, ovens, ranges, microwaves), identifying electrical, mechanical, refrigeration, and electronic control failures using multimeters, leak detectors, manifold gauges, and manufacturer diagnostic tools.
  • Repair or replace defective components such as motors, pumps, solenoids, thermostats, control boards, compressors, heating elements, belts, bearings, door seals, valves, and wiring harnesses, following manufacturer service manuals and wiring diagrams to ensure correct function and compliance with warranty terms.
  • Install new appliances and accessories on customer premises, including proper electrical and gas connections (where applicable), level and plumb installation, venting and ducting for dryers and ranges, and testing to confirm safe, code-compliant operation prior to customer sign-off.
  • Perform routine preventive maintenance services—cleaning coils and filters, checking refrigerant levels, inspecting gas lines and connections, lubricating moving parts, and recalibrating controls—to extend appliance lifespan and reduce future service calls.
  • Diagnose and repair refrigeration systems, including identifying refrigerant leaks, recovering and recharging refrigerant (per EPA 608 regulations where applicable), testing compressors and valves, and repairing sealed system components with brazing or authorized manufacturer procedures.
  • Execute electrical troubleshooting for 120V–240V circuits, control boards, timed cycles, and sensor systems; trace wiring faults, repair or replace connectors and harnesses, and confirm proper ground and continuity to protect users and appliances.
  • Document all service activity accurately in the company’s work order or CRM system: customer interactions, diagnostic findings, parts used, labor performed, service recommendations, warranty notes, and time-on-job to support billing, inventory, and analytics.
  • Manage parts sourcing and inventory on service vehicles: identify OEM or aftermarket parts needed, order parts through approved vendors or centralized parts systems, and track parts installed for warranty and cost control.
  • Provide clear, professional customer communication: explain diagnostics, describe repair options and costs, obtain authorization for repairs, demonstrate repaired appliance operation, and give maintenance advice to reduce repeat failures.
  • Conduct warranty and recall inspections and repairs per manufacturer requirements; properly document warranty claims and replace covered components with authorized parts to maintain compliance and customer trust.
  • Follow safety protocols and regulatory requirements at all times: use lockout/tagout procedures, test for gas leaks, adhere to electrical safety standards, dispose of refrigerants and hazardous materials according to local laws, and maintain a clean and safe work area.
  • Use mobile field-service software to accept assignments, navigate to job sites, capture electronic signatures, process customer payments, and close service orders in real time to improve scheduling and billing accuracy.
  • Estimate repair costs and provide transparent, itemized quotes for parts and labor; escalate complex or high-cost repair scenarios to dispatch or management for approval as needed.
  • Escalate recurring failures, complex control board issues, or suspected installation defects to senior technicians, technical support, or manufacturer hotlines and coordinate follow-up visits when specialized tools or parts are required.
  • Train, mentor, and Onboard junior technicians and apprentices: demonstrate safe work practices, share manufacturer-specific troubleshooting methods, and review completed jobs and documentation for quality assurance.
  • Conduct post-repair quality checks and follow-up calls for high-value or safety-critical repairs to confirm customer satisfaction and ensure repairs remain effective over time.
  • Maintain and calibrate diagnostic equipment and tools, perform routine service vehicle inspections, and ensure PPE, gauges, meters, refrigerant recovery units, and hand tools are service-ready and accounted for.
  • Maintain professional knowledge of new appliance models, control systems, and smart-home integrations (Wi-Fi enabled appliances, smart diagnostics) through manufacturer training, webinars, and industry literature to troubleshoot modern systems correctly.
  • Support business operations by contributing daily time reports, parts usage logs, and recommendations on frequently failing components to help purchasing and product teams negotiate better warranty coverage or stocking decisions.
  • Execute safety and code compliance checks during installations and repairs—proper grounding, gas connector materials and installation, venting clearances, and clearance to combustibles—to prevent liability and ensure occupant safety.
  • Participate in on-call rotation as required, providing emergency appliance repair services for critical failures (e.g., refrigeration for medical or food safety, gas leaks) with appropriate documentation and timely response.
  • Provide occasional light sales support by offering customers extended service plans, upgrades, or accessories when aligned with customer needs and company policies, while maintaining a non‑pressured, consultative approach.

Secondary Functions

  • Support continuous improvement by reporting common failure trends and root causes to service management to reduce repeat repairs and improve product reliability.
  • Assist inventory and procurement teams by recommending frequently used parts to be stocked on vans or at warehouses to improve first-visit fix rates.
  • Participate in regular safety meetings, training sessions, and manufacturer certification updates to remain current on product recalls, new repair techniques, and regulatory changes.
  • Help coordinate logistics with dispatch and scheduling teams to optimize routing, reduce travel time, and improve same-day or next-day service delivery metrics.
  • Provide photo and video evidence for complex diagnostics and warranty claims to streamline approval processes with manufacturers and insurance providers.
  • Contribute to customer education materials and knowledge base articles that can be used by other technicians and by customers for basic preventive maintenance tasks.
  • Support seasonal or promotional installation projects (new appliance rollouts, commercial upgrades) that require additional manpower or specialized installation teams.
  • Occasionally assist with light workshop bench repairs or component-level warranty evaluations when return-to-base service is required for complex sealed-system repairs.
