Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Assist experienced carpenters with measuring, marking, cutting, and assembling lumber and other building materials to construct, install, and repair frameworks, partitions, door and window frames, stairways, and other wooden structures.
- Read and interpret blueprints, plans, technical drawings, and specifications; mark layout lines on floors, walls, and ceilings for installation and construction work to ensure alignment with project dimensions and building codes.

- Carry out finish carpentry duties such as installing interior and exterior trim, baseboards, moldings, casings, door and window trim, and cabinetry components while achieving high standards of fit and finish.
- Prepare, measure, cut, and shape materials using hand tools (chisels, planes, hammers, handsaws) and power tools (circular saws, miter saws, table saws, routers, nail guns) while following proper safety and operational procedures.
- Assemble and install prefabricated components, stairs, railing systems, and custom millwork; learn complex joinery techniques including dovetail, mortise-and-tenon, and biscuit joints as assigned.
- Assist with installation of windows, doors, hardware, and weatherproofing materials; perform shimming, leveling, and fastening to ensure proper operation and energy efficiency.
- Build and set forms for concrete footings, steps, and slabs as required; assist with pouring, finishing, and stripping forms under direction while maintaining form accuracy.
- Measure and mark cut lines with precision; calculate material quantities and make accurate cross-cuts, bevels, and miters to minimize waste and meet blueprint specifications.
- Operate and maintain power equipment, saws, nailers, planers, sanders, and other carpentry machinery, carrying out daily inspections and basic troubleshooting to keep tools in safe, working condition.
- Apply appropriate fasteners, adhesives, sealants, and weatherproofing systems; ensure joints, seams, and terminations meet specifications for durability and moisture protection.
- Assist with installation of exterior siding, trim, soffit, fascia, and flashing to prevent water intrusion and achieve required aesthetic and performance standards.
- Work on scaffolding and ladders safely; assist in rigging and bracing temporary structures, following fall protection protocols and OSHA-compliant practices.
- Perform finish sanding, stain application, and protective coatings on wood surfaces to achieve specified finishes and surface tolerances, working closely with senior carpenters to learn finishing techniques.
- Participate in site layout and leveling tasks using transit, laser level, and measuring tools; help translate layout lines from plans to physical benchmarks on site.
- Load, unload, handle, stage, and secure building materials and equipment on site; maintain accurate material counts and report shortages or discrepancies to the foreperson.
- Assist with demolition and selective removal of existing structures or finishes while protecting salvageable materials and adjacent finished surfaces.
- Maintain clean, organized, and safe job sites by removing debris, performing daily housekeeping, and properly storing tools and hazardous materials in compliance with company policies.
- Document work progress, record hours, complete tool-check forms, and assist with basic paperwork for material inventory, time logs, and safety inspections.
- Observe and adhere to all job-site safety policies including PPE usage, lockout/tagout where applicable, and participate in daily toolbox talks and safety trainings.
- Seek instruction and feedback to advance carpentry techniques and competencies; complete required classroom or on-the-job training hours specified by the apprenticeship program and trade standards.
Secondary Functions
- Support lead carpenters with job-site measurements, material staging, and pre-cut lists to accelerate workflow and minimize material waste.
- Assist in basic material ordering, receiving, and verification against purchase orders and cut lists.
