Core Responsibilities
Primary Functions
- Assist senior technicians with vehicle diagnosis by using OBD-II scanners and manufacturer diagnostic software; read and interpret fault codes and preliminary test results to support effective repair planning.
- Perform routine preventive maintenance services including oil and filter changes, lube and grease jobs, fluid top-offs, coolant system inspections, and scheduled manufacturer maintenance items.
- Inspect, remove, and install brake system components (pads, rotors, calipers, shoes) and perform brake system bleeding, basic ABS checks, and post-repair verification drives under supervision.
- Mount, dismount, and balance tires; perform rotational patterns, inspect tire wear, change wheels, and verify proper lug torque to manufacturer specifications.
- Assist in suspension and steering repairs by inspecting shocks, struts, control arms, tie rods, bushings, and steering linkages; replace components and perform safety checks after installation.
- Support engine and transmission work by removing and installing components, assisting with gasket changes, basic tune-ups, fluid changes, and controlled disassembly/reassembly tasks under direction.
- Troubleshoot and perform basic repairs on vehicle electrical systems including batteries, starters, alternators, wiring harnesses, lighting, sensors, fuses, and relays.
- Use and maintain hand tools, pneumatic tools, lifts, hoists, jacks, and torque wrenches safely and accurately; ensure tools are calibrated and stored properly.
- Perform exhaust system inspections and repairs including replacing mufflers, hangers, catalytic converters and patching or replacing piping as directed by senior staff.
- Assist with HVAC system diagnosis and service: inspect compressors, evaporators, heater cores, replace cabin air filters, and help with refrigerant handling per regulations and shop policy.
- Learn and apply manufacturer service bulletins, technical service information, and repair manuals to ensure repairs meet OEM standards.
- Complete repair orders accurately: record labor operations, parts used, time entry, and customer notes in the shop management system or dealer software.
- Conduct test drives after repairs to validate repairs, listen for noises, verify drivability, and communicate observations to lead technicians.
- Support parts identification and ordering: locate correct part numbers, receive shipments, restock inventory, and notify supervisors of shortages.
- Clean, inspect, and prepare vehicles for delivery including pre-delivery inspections (PDI) and detailing touch-ups as required.
- Maintain shop cleanliness and organization: sweep bays, remove debris, secure hazardous materials, and perform daily safety checks to reduce risk and ensure compliance.
- Follow environmental and safety procedures for handling and disposing of oils, coolants, refrigerants, and other hazardous materials according to local and federal rules.
- Assist in warranty documentation and claim preparation by gathering records, photos, and repair details for senior technician or service advisor review.
- Participate in training programs, on-the-job coaching, and certification courses (e.g., ASE prep) to progressively increase independent repair responsibilities.
- Observe and support fleet maintenance scheduling, documentation and inspection workflows for customers with multiple vehicles.
- Report equipment malfunctions (lifts, compressed air systems, diagnostic stations) promptly and assist facilities staff in arranging repairs or preventive maintenance.
- Accurately measure and torque fasteners to specified values and follow torque sequences for critical assemblies to ensure safety and reliability.
- Support basic fabrication and small metalwork tasks such as welding, brazing, or bracket fabrication when required and authorized by the shop.
Secondary Functions
- Greet customers and service advisors professionally when retrieving or returning vehicles; communicate basic vehicle status updates under the direction of the service team.
- Assist with inventory cycle counts and suggest replenishment for frequently used parts and consumables.
- Document and photograph pre-repair and post-repair conditions for record-keeping and warranty support.
- Help implement continuous improvement suggestions from technicians to streamline bays, reduce rework, and improve first-time-fix rates.

Required Skills & Competencies
