Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

Assist licensed plumbers to layout, measure, cut, thread, and assemble pipe for water supply, drainage, and gas systems, learning practical pipe-fitting techniques across copper, PVC, PEX and steel applications.
Learn to read and interpret blueprints, shop drawings, and specifications to determine layout of plumbing systems, fixture locations, rough-in points and required elevations.
Help install and connect plumbing fixtures and appliances (sinks, faucets, toilets, showers, tubs, dishwashers, water heaters, garbage disposals), ensuring proper alignment, sealing and operation.
Perform soldering, brazing, and joining of copper pipe and fittings under supervision, following best practices to ensure leak-free joints and system reliability.
Assist in installing, testing and maintaining water heaters, boilers, pumps and recirculation systems, gaining experience in diagnostics and routine preventative maintenance.
Support pressure testing and leak detection procedures (air/water tests), documenting results and assisting in corrective repairs to meet code and specification.
Participate in the installation, testing, and maintenance of backflow prevention assemblies and other cross-connection controls, learning certification processes as applicable.
Aid in the routing and securing of piping, installation of hangers, supports and anchors, following layout tolerances and vibration isolation requirements.
Assist in the installation and repair of sanitary sewer lines, storm drainage, traps, vents and cleanouts, learning proper slope, bedding and backfill practices.
Learn to install, repair and size gas piping systems and connections to appliances under licensed supervision, following local codes and safe handling procedures for flammable gases.
Use hand and power tools safely and efficiently (pipe cutters, threading machines, power drills, soldering torches, augers and snakes), performing basic maintenance and tool checks.
Maintain accurate material counts and assist in inventory control, restocking trucks and reporting shortages to supervisors for project continuity.
Prepare and maintain job-site records such as time sheets, materials used, work orders and basic progress reports to support project tracking and billing.
Provide courteous on-site customer interaction when required, under supervision — explaining basic work steps, answering routine questions, and escalating technical concerns to the journeyman or foreperson.
Follow company and regulatory safety standards, including proper PPE use, confined space awareness, lockout/tagout, and adherence to OSHA and local plumbing code requirements.
Attend classroom training, apprenticeship meetings and on-the-job instruction to meet training hour requirements and trade competencies.
Support demolition and removal of old plumbing fixtures and piping, performing safe disposal and ensuring the site is prepared for new installations.
Assist in running service calls and basic diagnostics under supervision, learning to identify common causes of clogs, leaks, low pressure and fixture malfunctions.
Participate in site cleanup, material staging and jobsite organization each day to maintain professionalism and reduce hazards.
Learn to bend and shape pipe to required angles and configurations, using manual and powered benders, and verify dimensions before installation.
Aid in the application of sealants, caulking and pipe insulation to meet thermal and moisture control specifications.
Shadow experienced plumbers on complex repairs and installations to build troubleshooting strategies, sequencing skills and time management on larger projects.

Secondary Functions

Complete daily safety checklists and report unsafe conditions or near-misses to supervisors to support a strong safety culture.
Assist with basic estimating tasks such as measuring, counting fixtures and identifying required materials to support foremen during takeoffs.
Maintain and sanitize tools and equipment; perform routine cleaning and minor repairs to ensure readiness for the next job.
Participate in continuous improvement by sharing field observations that may reduce rework or improve workflow.
Drive or assist in driving company vehicles and ensure on-board stock and tools are secured and organized per company policy.
Support commissioning and start-up tasks under guidance, including flushing, system balancing and basic operational checks.
