🎯 Role Definition

The Apprentice Welder is an entry-level, hands-on fabrication and welding position designed for candidates pursuing a formal apprenticeship or on-the-job training. Under the supervision of journeyman welders and welding supervisors, the apprentice will learn and perform welding preparation, basic welding processes (MIG/GMAW, TIG/GTAW, Stick/SMAW, flux-cored), metal cutting, fitting and fabrication, QA support, and safe shop practices while progressively increasing responsibility and producing to welding procedure specifications (WPS) and industry codes (AWS, ASME). This role balances practical production tasks with structured training, documentation of hours and skills, and participation in safety and continuous-improvement initiatives.

Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Read, interpret and follow blueprints, fabrication drawings, welding symbols and specifications to accurately set up and perform basic welds consistent with the welding procedure specification (WPS) and work order requirements.
  • Prepare and fit-up metal components by measuring, marking, cutting and grinding parts to precise tolerances using hand tools, grinders, band saws, cutoff saws, plasma cutters and oxy-fuel equipment under supervision.
  • Set up welding equipment and fixtures for MIG (GMAW), TIG (GTAW), Stick (SMAW), and flux-cored welding; select appropriate electrodes, filler wire, shielding gas and machine settings following WPS and lead welder guidance.
  • Perform tack welding, lay beads and complete weld passes on plate, structural steel and piping while maintaining consistent travel speed, angle and fusion to meet visual and dimensional standards.
  • Support welders and fabricators on complex assemblies by aligning, clamping and performing temporary welds and grinds to achieve correct fit-up prior to final welding and inspection.
  • Execute basic welding joints (butt, fillet, groove) on carbon steel, stainless steel and aluminum components while progressively reducing supervision as competence grows.
  • Follow shop production schedules and work orders to prioritize tasks, meet production targets and adapt to changing job priorities while maintaining quality and safety standards.
  • Operate and maintain cutting tools (plasma, bandsaw, oxy-fuel) and fabrication equipment, ensuring guards, consumables and setups are correct to produce accurate cuts and reduce rework.
  • Clean and prepare weld joints by removing rust, paint, oil and contaminants using wire brushes, solvents and mechanical grinders to ensure sound welds and to minimize defects.
  • Monitor weld quality by performing visual inspection of weld bead profile, penetration and surface condition; report nonconforming work to lead welder or supervisor for rework or NDT.
  • Maintain accurate records of training hours, weld tests, certifications and daily production logs as required by the apprenticeship program and company policy.
  • Assist in performing basic non-destructive testing (NDT) support tasks such as dye-penetrant and visual inspection under supervision and learn to interpret inspection feedback for corrective action.
  • Participate in and document weld qualification tests and sample weld coupons, including grinding, etching and sample preparation for destructive testing where applicable.
  • Maintain consumables inventory (electrodes, shielding gas, filler wire, grinding discs) and notify supervisors of low stock levels to prevent production delays.
  • Adhere strictly to all safety protocols and personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements, including welding helmets, respirators, gloves and flame-resistant clothing; participate in job hazard analysis (JHA) and toolbox talks.
  • Conduct routine preventive maintenance on welding machines, torches, cables and hand tools; clean and store tools properly to extend equipment life and ensure shop readiness.
  • Learn and apply welding codes and standards (AWS, ASME, company-specific procedures) and incorporate code requirements into daily welding tasks and documentation.
  • Collaborate with engineers, fabricators and quality teams to clarify specifications, request clarifications on drawings and implement design or process changes that affect weld quality or throughput.
  • Assist in layout and marking of parts using squares, calipers, tape measures and level to ensure dimensional accuracy prior to machining or welding operations.
  • Troubleshoot basic welding defects (porosity, cracking, lack of fusion) by recording conditions, consulting with journeymen and implementing corrective measures to prevent recurrence.
  • Participate in formal apprenticeship training modules and on-the-job mentoring sessions; demonstrate skill progression via periodic performance assessments and weld tests.
  • Uphold shop housekeeping standards by sweeping, removing scrap metal, segregating waste, and organizing work areas to support safety and efficiency.

Secondary Functions

  • Support material handling activities including safe crane signaling, forklift assistance and staging of assemblies for welding operations.
  • Assist in shop continuous improvement initiatives by documenting recurrent issues, suggesting process improvements and participating in Kaizen events.
  • Help prepare shipping and receiving documentation for fabricated parts, including labeling, packaging and basic dimensional checks prior to dispatch.
  • Attend weekly safety meetings, participate in incident investigations when requested, and contribute to corrective action plans to improve workplace safety.
  • Provide administrative support such as entering time, job codes and production quantities into the shop tracking system when requested by supervisors.
  • Shadow senior welders on specialty projects (pipe welding, exotic alloys) to build cross-functional welding competence.
  • Assist quality control by preparing and organizing inspection reports, retaining weld coupons and maintaining traceability for materials and procedures.
  • Participate in vendor and supplier coordination for specialty consumables and tooling under direction of purchasing or lead welder.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Hands-on experience or training in GMAW (MIG), GTAW (TIG) and SMAW (Stick) welding processes; ability to set machine parameters according to WPS.
  • Basic metal fabrication skills: measuring, marking out, cutting (plasma, oxy-fuel, saw), grinding and fitting to specified tolerances.
  • Blueprint reading and interpretation of welding symbols, material callouts, dimensional tolerances and assembly instructions.
  • Familiarity with welding safety standards, proper use of PPE, ventilation requirements and hot work permitting processes.
  • Ability to perform tack welds, root passes, fill passes and final passes while maintaining consistent bead profile and penetration.
  • Knowledge of shielding gases, electrode types, wire feed speeds and how consumable selection affects weld chemistry and mechanical properties.
  • Basic non-destructive testing support: visual inspection, dye-penetrant testing assistance and understanding of when to escalate for advanced NDT.
  • Experience with shop equipment maintenance: cleaning welding torches, replacing contact tips, liners and checking cable integrity.
  • Competence with hand and power tools: angle grinders, grinders, chisels, punches, and layout tools (calipers, micrometers, squares).
  • Familiarity with welding codes and standards such as AWS D1.1 and relevant ASME sections, or demonstrated willingness to learn and comply.
  • Basic use of fabrication shop software or production tracking systems to log hours, jobs and material usage.

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High school diploma or GED; vocational training or coursework in welding, metalworking, or industrial technology preferred.

Preferred Education:

  • Certificate or diploma from a trade school or community college welding program.
  • Completion of pre-apprenticeship or short courses in MIG/TIG/Stick welding, blueprint reading or welding safety.
