Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Design, implement and manage daily operations of hatchery and grow-out systems (tanks, ponds, raceways, cages, and recirculating aquaculture systems - RAS) to meet production targets for survival, growth and biomass.
  • Monitor and control water quality parameters (dissolved oxygen, temperature, pH, salinity, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, alkalinity) using field instruments and lab tests, and implement corrective actions to maintain optimal rearing conditions.
  • Oversee broodstock management including selection, spawning induction, gamete handling, fertilization protocols, and maintenance of genetic records to optimize seed quality and performance.
  • Supervise larval, post-larval and juvenile rearing practices including egg incubation, yolk-sac absorption, weaning onto formulated feeds, and grading protocols to reduce mortality and improve uniformity.
  • Operate, maintain and troubleshoot recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) components: pumps, biofilters, UV/ozone systems, mechanical filtration, aeration and monitoring instrumentation.
  • Implement and maintain biosecurity programs: quarantine protocols, disinfection procedures, PPE enforcement, visitor controls and traceability to prevent pathogen introduction and spread.
  • Conduct routine fish health surveillance, perform sampling for parasites, bacteria and viruses, prepare samples for diagnostic labs and coordinate treatments with aquatic veterinarians or fish health teams.
  • Develop and manage feeding programs: feed scheduling, ration calculations, pellet size selection, and feed conversion ratio (FCR) tracking to improve feed efficiency and reduce waste.
  • Maintain accurate production records, daily logs and farm management databases (stocking, grading, mortalities, treatments, feed usage) to support audits and improve decision-making.
  • Coordinate harvesting, grading, packing and transport logistics including humane handling, live transport protocols and customer delivery schedules.
  • Lead and train production staff and seasonal workers in standard operating procedures (SOPs), safe animal handling, equipment use, and emergency response drills.
  • Manage procurement and inventory of critical supplies: feed, vaccines, chemicals, spare parts and lab consumables; negotiate with suppliers to optimize cost and quality.
  • Ensure regulatory compliance with local, regional and national permits and reporting requirements including environmental discharge, animal health reporting and fish movement permits.
  • Plan and execute on-site trials and production improvement initiatives (e.g., feed trial, genetics evaluation, water treatment upgrades) in collaboration with R&D or extension partners.
  • Analyze production metrics (survival, growth rates, FCR, yield) and generate regular performance reports to leadership with recommended corrective actions and forecasts.
  • Maintain and calibrate laboratory equipment, perform basic microbiology and histology sample preparations, and support diagnostic workflows for rapid decision-making.
  • Implement waste management and effluent treatment practices to minimize environmental impact and align with sustainability and permitting requirements.
  • Respond to and manage disease outbreaks or environmental emergencies, lead containment, treatment and reporting actions and conduct post-event reviews to prevent recurrence.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams (veterinary, R&D, engineering, sales) to support product development, commercial scaling and technical customer support.
  • Develop and update SOPs, biosecurity manuals and training materials; ensure staff adherence and continuous improvement through audits and coaching.
  • Oversee routine mechanical and electrical maintenance schedules, coordinate external contractors for specialized repairs, and document maintenance activities to minimize downtime.

Secondary Functions

  • Support data collection protocols and perform exploratory analysis of production data to identify trends, anomalies and opportunities for optimization.
  • Contribute to the organization's production strategy, improvement roadmap and sustainability goals by recommending equipment upgrades, process changes and trial designs.
  • Collaborate with external research partners and extension services to apply best practices in breeding, nutrition and health management to commercial operations.
  • Assist sales and customer service teams with technical support, farm visits, and post-sales troubleshooting related to animal performance and husbandry.
  • Participate in health and safety committees and lead workforce training on OSHA-equivalent safety practices, confined space and chemical handling specific to aquaculture.
  • Prepare budgets and assist with financial planning for production units, including cost-per-kg calculations and capital expenditure justifications.
  • Support permit applications and environmental monitoring reporting, including sampling, data analysis and stakeholder communications.
  • Engage in community outreach, extension activities and training workshops to represent the farm and share best practices with local growers and stakeholders.

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

  • Practical expertise in hatchery operations: broodstock management, spawning, larval rearing, egg incubation and fry production.
  • Strong knowledge and hands-on experience with RAS, flow-through and pond-based production systems, including equipment operation and maintenance.
  • Water quality monitoring and interpretation skills (DO, pH, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, salinity, alkalinity) with experience using probes, titration kits and lab instrumentation.
  • Fish health surveillance and sampling: gill/skin scrapings, histology sample prep, bacteriology/parasite identification workflows, and sample submission to diagnostic labs.
  • Implementation and enforcement of biosecurity protocols and quarantine procedures to prevent disease transmission.
  • Feeding program development and feed management including feed calculation, feed conversion ratio (FCR) optimization and knowledge of feed types and pellet sizing.
  • Experience operating and troubleshooting mechanical and electrical aquaculture equipment (pumps, blowers, filters, heaters, valves).

  • Basic laboratory skills including aseptic technique, microscopy, spectrophotometry and sample preservation.
  • Knowledge of relevant regulatory frameworks, permit processes, environmental compliance and reporting requirements for aquaculture operations.
  • Familiarity with common therapeutics, vaccination protocols and legal requirements for treatment use in aquaculture.
  • Ability to design and run production trials and interpret statistical results or coordinate with research analysts.
  • Mechanical aptitude for basic fabrication, plumbing and routine on-farm repair work.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Aquaculture, Fisheries Science, Marine Biology, Animal Science, Environmental Science, or a closely related field; OR equivalent combination of technical diploma and 3+ years of relevant experience.

Preferred Education:

  • Master’s degree in Aquaculture, Fisheries, Aquatic Animal Health or related discipline.
  • Certifications in aquaculture management, fish health, RAS operation or HACCP/GMP for aquaculture.
