Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Support safe tree removal operations by performing ground crew duties such as flagging work zones, setting up and maintaining exclusion zones, guiding rigging lines, and communicating with climbing personnel to control loads and prevent hazards.
  • Assist climbers and lead arborists during aerial pruning by preparing and passing rigging gear, hauling cut branches from the canopy, and operating lowering systems to ensure controlled descent of limbs.
  • Learn and operate chainsaws and pole saws under supervision to perform pruning, limb reduction, and sectional removals, following proper starting, fueling, and cutting techniques to maintain crew safety and productivity.
  • Operate and feed brush chippers to process cut material efficiently and safely, including correct infeed techniques, maintaining chipper throat clearance, and performing routine chipper inspections and cleaning.
  • Execute stump grinding tasks under direct supervision, including safe positioning of stump grinders, clearing debris, and performing final site grading to prepare areas for restoration or replanting.
  • Participate in rigging and rope systems setup for complex removals, including knot tying, anchor selection, line management, and assisting with mechanical advantage systems to control loads from the canopy.
  • Conduct pre-job safety checks and PPE inspections (helmets, harnesses, lanyards, eyewear, hearing protection, gloves) and report defective equipment promptly to maintain compliance with company and industry safety policies.
  • Perform tree and site inspections to assist in hazard identification, documenting cracks, decay, root issues, and structural defects; support crew leaders in recommending appropriate mitigation measures.
  • Help load and unload trucks and trailers, secure tools and machinery for transport, and organize equipment inventory to maximize efficiency and reduce work-site setup time.
  • Assist with planting, transplanting, staking, and initial watering of young trees as part of restoration and planting projects, ensuring proper holes, backfill, and root handling practices are followed.
  • Follow detailed instructions for cabling and bracing installations to support structurally compromised trees, including drilling, hardware installation, and tensioning under the direction of senior arborists.
  • Support pest and disease monitoring by reporting symptoms and assisting with basic treatment applications (mulch, basal sprays, trunk injections) as directed by certified staff.
  • Maintain clean, safe job sites by removing debris, raking, mulching, and restoring landscapes after tree work; ensure walkways, driveways, and turf are protected and restored when possible.
  • Provide courteous, clear communication with property owners and site contacts about work scope, safety boundaries, and expected timelines while escalating technical questions to supervisors.
  • Record job site data, work performed, hours, equipment used, and disposal details accurately for payroll, job costing, and compliance records using paper forms or mobile apps as required.
  • Participate in on-the-job training sessions and toolbox talks to learn industry best practices, emergency aerial rescue procedures, and company-specific safety protocols.
  • Assist with basic mechanical maintenance of power equipment (chainsaw sharpening, oil and fuel checks, air filter cleaning) and small engine troubleshooting to keep tools operational between scheduled service intervals.
  • Support traffic control for roadside tree work, including setup of cones, signs, and temporary flagging, and follow municipal traffic control plans to protect crews and the public.
  • Help measure and mark trees for pruning, removal, or inventory projects using diameter tape, clinometer, or laser tools, and support data-collection tasks for urban forestry mapping or work orders.
  • Learn and comply with local regulations, permitting requirements, and environmental protections (e.g., protected species, root protection zones) by following supervisor guidance and job specifications.
  • Participate in emergency storm response crews when needed, performing debris removal, temporary hazard mitigation, and assisting with rapid triage of dangerous trees following adverse weather events.
  • Support erosion control and soil stabilization tasks near root zones after removals, including installing mulch, wattles, or temporary barriers as directed to protect soil structure and nearby plantings.
  • Assist with minor landscape repairs and aesthetic finishing, such as grading, soil amendment placement, and mulch distribution after tree work to leave sites safe and presentable.
  • Continuously document learning progress and required competencies to support mentorship reviews and certification preparation (e.g., ISA exam prerequisites or apprenticeship milestones).

Secondary Functions

  • Support crew leaders with pre- and post-job administrative tasks, including timesheet entries, equipment checklists, and supply requests to keep operations flowing.
  • Contribute observations and feedback from field work to supervisors to improve safety practices, rigging methods, and workflow efficiencies.
  • Assist in staging materials and performing inventory control for hardware such as ropes, slings, carabiners, and rigging blocks to maintain readiness for assignments.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • High school diploma or GED preferred; consistent attendance and reliability valued for apprenticeship success.

Preferred Education:

  • Coursework or certificate in horticulture, arboriculture, forestry, or landscape technology; completion of an ISA Certified Arborist preparatory program is a plus.

Experience Requirements

Typical Experience Range:
