Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

Operate single drum, double drum (tandem) and pneumatic roller equipment safely and efficiently to achieve specified pavement density and surface finish on hot mix asphalt (HMA) and other roadway surfaces.
Follow project plans, mix designs, engineering specifications, and compaction patterns to achieve uniform density and prevent segregation of HMA materials.
Monitor roller speed, vibration frequency, amplitude, water spray, tire pressure and drum settings; adjust machine controls to match mat temperature and mix characteristics.
Coordinate with asphalt paver operators to maintain consistent mat edges, joint compaction, and smooth transitions between lifts and adjacent lanes.
Perform pre-shift, mid-shift and post-shift equipment inspections, documenting fluid levels (fuel, hydraulic oil, engine oil), tires/tracks, brakes, water systems and safety devices; report and tag out defective equipment.
Execute effective breakdown and joint compaction techniques, including static passes and vibratory patterns around utility cuts, curbs, and intersections to ensure structural integrity.
Monitor and record mat temperatures, number of passes, test strip results and in-place density data as directed by the quality control plan or paving superintendent.
Work with QC/QA technicians and inspectors to implement density testing (nuclear or non-nuclear gauges) and make compaction adjustments in real time to meet specifications.
Maintain proper documentation of work performed, including daily production reports, equipment logs, maintenance records and any incident or near-miss reports.
Enforce and follow site-specific safety plans and OSHA standards, including lockout/tagout procedures, PPE requirements, pedestrian exclusion zones and communication protocols with flaggers and traffic control.
Communicate frequently with crew members, paver operators and forepersons to sequence operations, coordinate lane closures and resolve compaction or paving issues quickly.
Execute proper mat edge treatment, transition rolling and handwork coordination with rakers, shovelers and hand tampers to ensure smooth joints and rideability.
Operate rollers in heated and noisy environments while maintaining focus on sightlines, blind-spot awareness and proximity to other crew members and equipment.
Implement environmental controls as required, such as managing runoff, preventing excessive dust, and following proper disposal of asphalt waste and fluids.
Support temperature-sensitive compaction strategies by scheduling rolling patterns to match mat cooling curves and avoid over- or under-compaction.
Conduct minor preventive maintenance and troubleshooting (greasing, belt checks, battery maintenance, cleaning spray bars) and coordinate repairs with mechanics to minimize downtime.
Adapt rolling technique for different substrates and materials (base course, binder lift, surface lift, reclaimed asphalt pavement) to meet compaction goals.
Maintain awareness of surrounding traffic, set up and remove traffic control devices as required, and assist flaggers when necessary to maintain a safe work zone.
Train and mentor less-experienced roller operators or equipment apprentices on safe operating procedures, compaction basics and site protocols.
Respond to changing site conditions — weather, material variability, contractor delays — and modify compaction strategy in consultation with supervision to protect mat quality.
Ensure compliance with municipal and state paving specifications, including thickness, smoothness tolerances, joint construction and density targets.
Participate in safety briefings, toolbox talks and site orientation sessions; contribute observations to continuous improvement of paving operations and compaction techniques.

Secondary Functions

Assist in site layout, traffic control setup and daily staging of paving materials and equipment.
Support material handling and supply coordination by signaling and communicating with dump truck drivers and plant attendants.
Help maintain a clean and organized work area, removing debris from the rolling path and protecting drainage inlets during paving operations.
Provide input to project documentation, such as daily reports, production logs and machine maintenance entries.
Help set grade references, stakes and stringlines when required and coordinate with grade checkers for transitions and cross-sections.
Participate in small job-site repairs and post-paving clean-up, including removing asphalt buildup from drums and adjusting spray-bar nozzles.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

High school diploma or equivalent (preferred), or documented equivalent work experience in heavy equipment operation.

Preferred Education:

Vocational certificate or technical training in heavy equipment operation, construction trades, or pavement technology.
Certifications such as OSHA 10, ATSSA Flagger/Traffic Control, or equipment-specific manufacturer training are a plus.
