Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Lead and co-manage all clinical operations in partnership with the Director of Nursing, overseeing nursing practice, clinical workflows, patient care standards, and day-to-day unit management to ensure safe, effective, and person-centered care across the facility.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor nursing policies, procedures, and clinical protocols that align with evidence-based practice, state and federal regulations (including CMS and OIG guidelines), and organizational quality goals.
  • Serve as the facility’s clinical compliance lead during surveys, inspections, and audits—preparing documentation, coordinating corrective action plans, educating staff on survey readiness, and ensuring timely resolution of citation items.
  • Direct staff scheduling, staffing models, and acuity-based assignments to optimize patient outcomes, maintain budgetary targets, and ensure appropriate skill-mix; manage overtime and agency utilization in collaboration with HR and finance.
  • Coach, mentor, and evaluate front-line nursing leaders (charge nurses, team leads, nurse managers), providing performance feedback, competency assessment, and individualized development plans to build clinical leadership bench strength.
  • Oversee clinical documentation standards and Electronic Medical Record (EMR/EHR) utilization to ensure accuracy, timely charting, compliance with reimbursement requirements (including MDS, RAI, ICD coding where applicable), and interoperability with other systems.
  • Establish and lead quality improvement initiatives—analyze clinical data (falls, pressure injuries, readmissions, infection rates), set measurable targets, deploy PDSA cycles, and report outcomes to leadership and governance committees.
  • Manage medication management and administration oversight including pharmacy collaboration, MAR audits, controlled substance monitoring, and development of medication safety protocols that reduce errors and adverse drug events.
  • Implement and sustain infection prevention and control programs: lead surveillance, staff education, isolation precautions, outbreak response, and adherence to CDC and state recommendations to minimize HAI risk.
  • Ensure clinical competency through structured orientation, ongoing education, skills validation, simulation, and competency sign-off processes for new hires and existing staff to maintain high standards of practice.
  • Partner with interdisciplinary teams (physicians, PT/OT, social work, pharmacy, dietary) to coordinate care planning, transition-of-care processes, discharge planning, and communication with families to support optimal clinical and operational outcomes.
  • Lead incident investigation and root cause analysis for adverse events, sentinel events, and complaints—develop action plans, implement process changes, and monitor effectiveness to prevent recurrence.
  • Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) and operational dashboards (staffing, quality metrics, regulatory compliance, patient satisfaction) and prepare regular reports and executive summaries for senior leadership.

  • Drive resident/patient experience initiatives by coaching staff on therapeutic communication, dignity-focused care, and responsiveness; analyze satisfaction survey data and implement improvement plans.
  • Ensure all nursing and support staff maintain active licensure, certifications, TB screening, immunizations, OSHA/BSI training, and mandatory annual education; manage credentialing and privileging processes where applicable.
  • Administer clinical onboarding and retention programs including career ladders, mentorship, recognition programs, and targeted interventions to reduce turnover and strengthen employee engagement.
  • Oversee emergency preparedness and disaster response planning for clinical operations—coordinate drills, ensure staff competence in emergency protocols, and maintain critical supplies and contingency staffing plans.
  • Maintain and optimize clinical supply management and equipment readiness—coordinate with facilities and procurement on inventory control, preventative maintenance, and safe use of medical devices.

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) strongly preferred; active RN license required.

Preferred Education:
