Core Responsibilities

Primary Functions

  • Conduct comprehensive risk assessments for new business and renewal submissions by reviewing application data, loss history, financial statements, and supplementary documentation to determine eligibility against underwriting guidelines and appetite.
  • Prepare and analyze underwriting submissions including coverages, limits, endorsements, exclusions and policy forms; summarize critical risk factors and present recommendations to senior underwriters for decision-making.
  • Calculate premiums and rate adjustments using company-specific rating manuals, tiering criteria and pricing tools, ensuring accuracy of commissions, fees and taxes prior to policy issuance.
  • Support quote generation and proposal development by assembling policy terms, conditions and pricing to deliver clear and compliant proposals to brokers and agents.
  • Process new business and renewal endorsements, binding instructions and policy changes in the underwriting platform (e.g., Guidewire, Duck Creek, AMS) with accurate documentation and audit trail maintenance.
  • Verify and validate loss runs, claims reports and third-party inspections; escalate material exposures and adverse trends to the underwriting manager for further review and potential action.
  • Review and apply reinsurance terms or facultative referrals where required, engaging internal reinsurance or risk transfer teams and preparing clear referral packages.
  • Monitor and manage assigned book of business for exposure concentrations, profitability trends and policy expirations; recommend retention or declination strategies to optimize portfolio performance.
  • Liaise with brokers, agents and internal sales teams to clarify submission details, negotiate terms, secure missing documentation and close transactions in a timely manner.
  • Maintain compliance with regulatory requirements and company underwriting policies by documenting decisions, rationale and exceptions, and by participating in internal audits and quality reviews.
  • Support product development and rating projects by compiling underwriting feedback, exception data and competitor intelligence to inform product enhancements and pricing strategy.
  • Conduct periodic portfolio reviews and produce underwriting reports and dashboards (e.g., exposure by industry, loss ratio trends) to support managerial decisions and strategic planning.
  • Coordinate and schedule third-party inspections, engineering surveys, and loss control visits, summarizing recommendations and ensuring required mitigation actions are documented in the risk file.
  • Execute delegated authority tasks and endorsements within established limits and escalate referrals that exceed delegation thresholds for senior underwriting review.
  • Assist with claims intake triage for newly bound risks by flagging pre-existing conditions or emerging exposures that could impact coverage and reserving.
  • Facilitate issuance of policy documents, certificates of insurance, and evidence of coverage to brokers and insureds, ensuring documents reflect agreed terms and conditions.
  • Track and manage renewal deadlines, mid-term audits and premium adjustments; prepare renewal recommendation memos with competitive analysis and loss experience review.
  • Interpret and apply endorsements, policy language and exclusions to determine coverage implications for complex or ambiguous claims scenarios prior to referral to claims handlers.
  • Maintain and update underwriting manuals, checklists and knowledgebase articles to promote consistency and efficiency within the underwriting team.
  • Provide training and mentorship to new underwriting staff and cross-functional colleagues on underwriting processes, system workflows and documentation standards.
  • Engage in continuous process improvement by identifying bottlenecks in workflow, recommending automation or system enhancements, and participating in implementation pilots to improve speed and accuracy.
  • Respond to ad-hoc underwriting and compliance data requests, supplying clear reports and supporting documentation for internal teams or regulatory inquiries.

Secondary Functions

Required Skills & Competencies

Hard Skills (Technical)

Education & Experience

Educational Background

Minimum Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Finance, Business Administration, Risk Management, Economics, Insurance, or equivalent combination of education and related work experience.

Preferred Education:

  • Bachelor's degree plus industry certifications such as CPCU (Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter), AINS (Associate in General Insurance), ARM (Associate in Risk Management) or equivalent.
  • Coursework or certificate in data analytics, insurance law or actuarial fundamentals beneficial.
